Frank is an Irish sailor who has traveled the world and secured a home in Buenos Aires. He returns to Ireland for a holiday, where he meets and courts Eveline. He represents adventure and an avenue of escape, entertaining her with stories of his travels through the Straits of Magellan.

Mr. Hill is the patriarchal head of his household. He struggles with alcohol and frequently argues with his daughter over her wages on Saturday nights.
