The term “tradwife,” short for traditional wife, describes a 21st-century online movement where influencers build brands around an aesthetic of hyper-traditional domesticity, submission to male leadership, and a rejection of modern feminism. This primarily American subculture gained significant traction on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, with creators promoting a return to traditional, heteronormative gender roles through content featuring from-scratch baking, homeschooling large families, and homesteading. Influencers such as Hannah Neeleman of Ballerina Farm, who co-runs a multimillion-dollar business from her Utah ranch, exemplify the movement’s blend of rustic idealism and savvy entrepreneurship.
Tradwife content typically spotlights a heterosexual couple with children, wherein the wife focuses her attention on child-rearing and domestic labor, often while eschewing modern conveniences. It is common for tradwife influencers to have families larger than the American average (Neeleman, for example, has nine children). Tradwife content may be linked explicitly or implicitly to conservative political agendas, particularly around women working outside of the home. The tradwife movement is sometimes seen as a backlash to the earlier “girlboss” narrative (which emphasized emotional and economic independence and encouraged women to actively compete for success in corporate environments). It relies on a central paradox: The women depicted on social media as rejecting careers in favor of motherhood and domestic life in fact have careers as content creators (which are often extremely lucrative).
Everyone is Lying to You explores the tradwife online subculture by positioning Rebecca Sommers, or @BarefootMamaLove, as a leading tradwife influencer who meticulously curates her life for public consumption. The novel uses this backdrop to explore how the ideology of female submission, when packaged for social media, can create a dangerous trap. Rebecca admits the artifice of her content, noting that while her audience sees a pastoral dream, they will “never see my bruises” (25). By embedding its thriller plot within this real-world influencer niche, the novel critiques how the romanticization of traditional roles can obscure and even enable cycles of domestic control and abuse.
Author Jo Piazza brings years of experience as a journalist to Everyone Is Lying to You, offering an insider’s critique of the influencer economy. Her background includes writing nonfiction books on celebrity and media, but her most direct influence is her critically acclaimed podcast, Under the Influence. On the podcast, Piazza investigates the often-unregulated and ethically ambiguous world of social media creators, examining everything from the monetization of children (known as “sharenting”) to the psychological toll of maintaining a public-facing brand. This journalistic expertise provides the novel with a foundation of authenticity and sharp-eyed detail, particularly in its depiction of the influencer conference MomBomb, where attendees learn to pivot personal brands and court advertisers.
The character of Lizzie, a journalist profiling Rebecca, functions as a stand-in for Piazza’s investigative perspective. Her initial fascination and skepticism mirror the complex relationship traditional media has with the creator economy, which she acknowledges as a “master class in entrepreneurship” that has simultaneously dismantled her own industry (36). The book’s dedication, “For all the influencers. May you wield your immense power for good” (ix), reflects the nuanced stance found in her reporting. She acknowledges the significant cultural power influencers hold while using the thriller genre to issue a cautionary tale about the potential for that power to be used for manipulation and harm.
