Eyes of the Void, the second book in Adrian Tchaikovsky's Final Architecture trilogy, picks up after the Architects, moon-sized crystalline entities that reshape inhabited planets, have returned to threaten all sentient life. In the previous book, Idris Telemmier, one of the last surviving original Intermediaries (humans whose minds were surgically altered to perceive and navigate unspace, the layer of unreality beneath the physical universe), defected from the human Colonial government known as Hugh to the Parthenon, an independent military society of genetically engineered women. He did so to help them develop their own Intermediary program without the brutal methods of Hugh's Liaison Board, where most conscripted subjects die during conversion.
The novel opens on Arc Pallator, a world belonging to the Hegemony, the interstellar polity ruled by the alien Essiel. An Architect appears in orbit over the largest known site of ruins left by the Originators, a vanished elder civilization whose remnants once repelled the Architects. The Essiel forbid evacuation and command their human cultists to remain as a test of faith, trapping pilgrim ship captain Uline Tarrant and thousands of others on the doomed world.
Multiple storylines unfold simultaneously. On the frontier station Hismin's Moon, Havaer Mundy, an agent of Hugh's intelligence service Mordant House, races to recover a sealed cylinder of leaked government data before the Parthenon can acquire it. The crew of the salvage ship
Vulture God, including amputee drone specialist Olli, alien Hannilambra trade factor Kittering, Partheni soldier-agent Solace, and the crew's lawyer, Kris Almier, are working the same job. When the seller is killed by Nativist operatives, xenophobic human supremacists, Havaer discovers his own subordinate Kenyon has betrayed them. He kills Kenyon and recovers the cylinder, then receives a covert message from his displaced superior, Chief Laery, instructing him to analyze the contents secretly.
Aboard the Partheni garden ship
Ceres, Idris spends months guiding candidates through unspace to identify who might survive Intermediary conversion. His handler announces a breakthrough: A candidate named Cognosciente Grave shows neurological readings mirroring Idris's own, suggesting her genetic lineage could produce viable Intermediaries without catastrophic mortality. Idris insists all candidates must be genuine volunteers but remains uneasy about how the Parthenon's military culture defines consent.
The threads converge when Delegate Trine, an archaeologist of the Hiver species (aliens whose individuals are composite colony organisms), arrives with an invitation to visit Arc Pallator. The Architect there has stalled: Its crystal servitors are methodically dismantling the Originator ruins before reshaping the planet, a process estimated to take months. Idris agrees to go, hoping the site might hold the key to ending the war.
On Arc Pallator, the Partheni delegation works alongside a Colonial team that includes Morzarin Ravin Uskaro, a Magdan nobleman whose family holds a grudge against the
Vulture God crew. Idris discovers that the Originator ruins exert genuine pressure on unspace, potentially explaining why the Architects must remove them before reshaping a world. He also senses that each crystalform, one of the Architect's mobile crystal servitors, contains a window connecting it to the Architect's core intelligence. Meanwhile, Olli discovers that the Essiel's servants are systematically killing the planet's three billion fungal Athamir inhabitants while displaced human cultists are herded to a newly built Temple rather than evacuated.
Three Naeromathi Locust Arks, the massive nomadic vessels of an alien species, arrive and deploy an unprecedented weapon: a virtual unspace engine generated between the rotating Arks that visibly cracks the Architect. When it calls reinforcements and three more Architects arrive, the Naeromathi are destroyed, but the ruins resonate with the weapon, flooding Idris's mind with revelations. In the chaos, Uskaro's Voyenni, his bodyguard retainers, attack the Partheni and seize Idris. Solace fights desperately but is severely wounded. A rogue Tothiat named Emmaneth, a human bonded with an alien symbiote granting near-instantaneous regeneration, kills the Voyenni captors but carries Idris into the Temple. The Essiel activate hidden gravitic technology to transport the structure through unspace off the dying planet. The
Vulture God escapes with refugees, though the Partheni warship
Grendel's Mother is destroyed covering the retreat.
In parallel, Havaer's analyst uncovers the cylinder's contents: transcripts revealing powerful Hugh figures, including senior members of the Uskaro family, are secretly building ark ships and engineering war with the Parthenon to eliminate competition for dominance of a spacefaring future.
Believing Idris dead, the crew holds a wake. Then a message arrives showing him alive among refugees. The crew forms an uneasy alliance with the Broken Harvest, a Hegemonic criminal cartel run by the Essiel gangster Aklu, whose lieutenant Heremon wants to recapture the rogue Emmaneth. Havaer, now working covertly for Laery, joins the group. They trace Emmaneth's supply chain to the academic world of Deathknell, where the Boyarin (a Magdan noble title) Piter Uskaro arrives independently and captures Kris. War between Hugh and the Parthenon officially breaks out after an attack on the
Ceres, which Havaer connects to the ark ship conspirators.
The hunt leads to Criccieth's Hell, a death-world where voracious glass-like plants generate radiation intense enough to disintegrate unprotected matter. Hidden beneath a shield generated by the only known functioning Originator installation, Idris has been put to work by Emmaneth's team: disgraced scientist Doctor Haleon Shinandri, engineer Tokamak Jaine, and a revenge-driven Naeromathi called Ahab. Their "Machine" uses the Originator technology as a lens into unspace, but only an Intermediary can focus it. Despite initial resistance, Idris becomes consumed by the revelations the Machine provides: the architecture of the Throughways (the navigable routes used for travel through unspace), the reality of the Presence—a vast ancient entity lurking in unspace's depths whose attention drives unprotected minds toward self-destruction—and how sentient thought distorts the boundary between real and unreal.
Multiple factions converge on Criccieth's Hell. A Partheni task force, Colonial naval forces, and the Raptorid, Piter Uskaro's battle yacht carrying the captive Kris, create a three-way standoff in orbit. Solace leads a combat shuttle to the surface, while Olli boards the Raptorid to rescue Kris, who stabs Piter in self-defense when he draws a gun on her.
In a final dive, Idris and Ahab penetrate deep into unspace and discover not the Architects' masters but the place where Architects are born. The Architects sense the intrusion and are terrified that their nursery has been found. During a violent clash between Emmaneth and Heremon inside the failing installation, a tendril of Criccieth's lethal plant life pierces and incinerates Emmaneth. Idris loses his arm to radiation exposure and uses the Machine's gravitic capabilities to wrench a section of the installation into orbit, mirroring the Essiel's rescue of the Temple on Arc Pallator.
Chief Laery broadcasts a declaration announcing a new alliance led by the Hiver Assembly, with Hegemonic and rogue Mordant House elements, possessing the means to strike against the Architects for the first time. She calls on both Hugh and the Parthenon to suspend hostilities and announces plans to confiscate the ark fleet the Uskaro cabal has been secretly building. Idris confides to Ash—an alien known as the Harbinger for having originally warned humanity about the Architects—that any weapon built from this knowledge would target the Architects' offspring, not their true masters, constituting genocide against enslaved creatures. Ash dismisses the objection, insisting billions of lives are at stake. Solace tells Idris that the Partheni Intermediary program is relocating to the alliance's neutral base and that his help training candidates is needed. Idris reluctantly accepts that the war is not done with him. The story continues in the trilogy's final volume,
Lords of Uncreation.
