Plot Summary

In a far future where humanity survived ecological collapse on Earth by organizing under feudal megacorporations called Concerns, interstellar expansion is driven by a desperate need to avoid a second resource crisis. Concern-owned ships like the Garveneer are sent to distant star systems to strip-mine resources and build waystations for further colonization. The novel is narrated primarily by Juna Ceelander, administrative assistant to the Special Projects team aboard the Garveneer, who serves as the crew's unofficial social mediator.

When the Garveneer arrives at the Prospector413 system, a moon orbiting a gas giant blazes with constant electromagnetic noise. The ship's commercial leadership tier, Opportunities, headed by Chief Director Sharles Advent, wakes the six-person Special Projects team to investigate. Led by Director Oswerry Bartokh, the team includes Juna, exogeologist Hari Skien, biologist Shemp Rastomaier, engineer Mai Ste Etienne, and data specialist Mikhail "Big Mike" Jerennian. The moon, dubbed Shroud, is profoundly hostile: 1.8 times Earth's gravity, crushing atmospheric pressure, temperatures well below freezing, an anoxic atmosphere thick with hydrogen and ammonia, and absolute darkness.

After losing 13 drones, Deep Drone Fourteen returns 12 seconds of footage showing alien life: segmented briar-like structures covering a liquid surface, and a creature larger than the drone, built of interlocking latticework, its surface shimmering with fine metallic hairs. Juna theorizes that the planet-wide electromagnetic noise is biological, with all Shroud life generating radio waves for navigation and communication in the darkness. Ste Etienne engineers a space elevator anchored to ice at Shroud's outward-facing pole, providing reliable surface access.

Under mounting pressure from Opportunities for commercially exploitable results, Bartokh secretly orders Ste Etienne to design manned vehicles: spherical pods on four legs with layered hulls and medical systems. An industrial accident then destroys the workbay when pressurized tanks of Shroud atmosphere rupture and explode, killing Skien and Rastomaier. Juna and Ste Etienne are sealed inside one pod, Bartokh in another. The blast hurls both pods into Shroud's gravity well. Jerennian survives aboard the Garveneer.

Juna and Ste Etienne wake on the surface in total darkness, restore systems, and activate external lamps. The Shrouded surround them: nine-meter creatures whose wormlike bodies inhabit hollow articulated exoskeletons of interlocking segments. Ste Etienne transmits three-beat electromagnetic pulses on the creatures' communication frequency, and they echo each burst back. The Shrouded free Bartokh's stuck pod, then herd all three underground into a carved chamber where a shorn Shrouded, stripped of its sensory hairs, is ritually dismembered and consumed. The humans realize they have been reserved as offerings, not recognized as fellow minds. The Shrouded separate Bartokh's pod, pry it open using limbs shaped to fit human tool fittings, and expose him to Shroud's lethal atmosphere. He dies instantly.

Juna and Ste Etienne flee. The Shrouded follow at a distance, echoing the three-beat signal. When an ambush predator attacks the pod, the escort fights it off at the cost of several of their own. Ste Etienne breaks down, and Juna comforts her. They establish a dynamic: Juna absorbs emotional shocks so Ste Etienne can function, and Ste Etienne's competence gives Juna something to believe in.

Alternating chapters reveal the Shrouded's perspective. The entity is a distributed intelligence, a single mind composed of many worm-segments whose electromagnetic thoughts unite them. When segments travel too far from their home nest, the connection frays and they lose cognitive complexity, becoming separate Otherlike minds: local splinter-intelligences cut off from the core consciousness. The Shrouded interpreted the pod as a message-bearing ambassador and killed Bartokh while attempting to "read" its contents. The failure prompts it to send segments after the surviving pod, painting it with scent-marks meaning "Stranger, of interest, safeguard."

Juna determines their location by filtering Shroud's radiosphere and discovers they are on the wrong hemisphere, maximally far from the elevator anchor. Their trek crosses living ice held together by a vast transparent organism, volcanic archipelagos where the Shrouded farm with purpose-built tools, underground caves haunted by predators invisible to the Shrouded's senses, and a biome where creatures fire flash-freezing projectiles. At each stage, Shrouded escort the pod, passing the three-beat signal from colony to colony.

Within a vast ice city, they discover a hanging mobile that Ste Etienne identifies as an orrery, a model of the solar system built by creatures with no eyes. Outside, they find enormous airships reverse-engineered in days from a crashed human drone. They steal one and fly toward the pole but crash into a mountain range. They complete the journey on foot, detect the elevator anchor's signal, tap into its fiber-optic line, and signal the Garveneer. Two days later, they are rescued.

Interludes throughout the novel narrate Shroud's evolutionary history in a distinctive voice addressing humanity directly. These trace the development of life from deep-sea vents through the emergence of a single planetary intelligence whose thoughts once spanned the globe. The fifth interlude reveals that this consciousness was shattered not only by its biosphere's growing noise but by the arrival of human electromagnetic emissions from space, a catastrophe humanity caused before ever landing.

Back on the Garveneer, Opportunities disbands Special Projects and shelves all three survivors in hibernation. Forty-one days later, they are woken because the Shrouded are systematically dismantling mining equipment. Assigned to a new team called Remedial Work, directed by Technical Oversight Director Terwhin Umbar with xenospecies specialist Ducas FenJuan as acting deputy, they discover the Shrouded have copied human cable-laying robots and are connecting their nests with fiber-optic lines, organizing resistance on a scale their biology alone never permitted. During this period, Juna and Ste Etienne share a private conversation revealing a bond fiercely protective yet deliberately held short of romance, because the pain of separation between waking cycles would be unbearable if they fully committed.

The ship's security division, Safeguarding, deploys armed hunter-killer drones. The first flights return reporting over 1,400 kills, but Jerennian discovers the ammunition is untouched: The Shrouded hacked the drones' systems to report false results. One drone activates its guns inside the workbay, killing Safeguarding Director Jadi Timorai and several others. The ship's systems then shut down entirely, alarms stuttering in three-beat bursts. The Shrouded have infiltrated the Garveneer's entire electronic architecture, projecting their thoughts into any system within range.

Juna realizes the Shrouded cannot perceive individual humans, because human bodies generate no meaningful electromagnetic signals. The aliens have been fighting the ship's machinery, not its crew. She proposes broadcasting her brain activity using the pod's medical scanning system, modified with powerful transmitters, to demonstrate that a living mind inhabits the metal shell. When orbital broadcasts fail, she must descend to the surface herself. At departure, Juna has Jerennian restrain Ste Etienne and remove her from the workbay, sealing herself inside the pod alone.

She descends, transmitting her neural activity into the radiosphere. The Shrouded intelligence, now reconnected across the globe via fiber-optic cables, carries the pod underground and examines the signal. It gradually perceives something unprecedented: not another piece of technology but a mind, a "you" in a universe where before there was only "me." With extraordinary delicacy, it touches Juna's thoughts with its own.

In a brief epilogue aboard the crippled Garveneer, the communications channel comes alive, first with three hissing beats, then with Juna's voice. She begins to speak, opening with the phrase that has introduced every interlude chapter: "Let me put this into words you can understand." This reveals that the interludes narrating Shroud's evolutionary history have been Juna speaking as an intermediary between the Shrouded mind and humanity, translating alien understanding into human language.
