Fallen Rook, the third installment in the Society of Villains series, is a dark male/male romance set within the world of the Camorra, a powerful Italian organized crime syndicate operating out of New York. The novel alternates between the perspectives of Enzo Ferrante, the 26-year-old enforcer of the Ferrante crime family, and Tom Rothwell, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Supervisory Special Agent tasked with bringing the Ferrantes down.
On the night Enzo buries his father, Vello, the former don, or leader, of the Ferrante family, he visits a gay club in Hell's Kitchen to explore his sexuality for the first time. Enzo has spent his life suppressing his attraction to men after Vello explicitly threatened to kill him and any male lover. What no one knows is that Enzo secretly poisoned Vello over two years, ultimately killing him the day before the funeral. At the club, Enzo meets a hookup named Cash, but the encounter is a blackmail trap: Cash photographs Enzo and pulls a gun on him. Before Cash can deliver his demands, Tom emerges from the shadows and snaps Cash's spine, killing him instantly. Tom, who has been surveilling Enzo for three years, reveals he is bisexual and acted to protect Enzo from being forcibly outed. Enzo chases Tom to his car and pesters him for a kiss. Tom kisses Enzo aggressively in the street before driving off.
Enzo floods Tom's phone with flirtatious messages, which Tom initially blocks. Tom's backstory reveals a rigidly controlled life shaped by two combat tours as a Green Beret, a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier. When Tom's superior, Deputy Director Zeke Maddox, announces that headquarters wants to shelve the Ferrante case, Tom convinces Zeke to grant him two more months by claiming he can exploit a rapport with Enzo for intelligence. He unblocks Enzo's number, ostensibly to advance the investigation. In practice, Tom never asks Enzo a single question about the Camorra. Instead, the two men begin a clandestine sexual relationship. Tom tells Enzo the FBI has dropped the case, a lie he maintains throughout.
Enzo continues his enforcer duties while privately struggling with a condition he has shared with no one: severe psoriasis, an autoimmune disorder triggered by stress, which causes disfiguring flare-ups he conceals with tattoos and self-inflicted scars. When Tom notices marks on Enzo's wrists at the gym and confronts him, Enzo reacts with fury and storms off, interpreting concern as disgust. This pattern of rupture and reconciliation defines their early relationship.
The Ferrante family's political situation grows precarious. Luca Ferrante, Enzo's eldest brother and the new don, pressures Enzo to marry Katya Rasputin, the youngest sister of Alex Rasputin, the boss of the Bratva, a Russian organized crime syndicate, to secure an alliance between the two organizations. Enzo agrees despite his lack of attraction to Katya, and they privately arrange an open engagement.
When Enzo follows Tom to Staten Island and sees him with a woman and child, he assumes Tom is married. Tom reveals the truth: His former lover, Matt, was a closeted fellow veteran who took his own life eight years earlier. Tom has since supported Matt's widow, Iris, and their son, Silas, out of guilt. Tom also reveals he has post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which he manages through rigid routine and emotional isolation. The revelation deepens their bond, but a crisis follows. Tom arrives at Enzo's apartment for a planned encounter while in the grip of a PTSD episode, triggered by jealousy after seeing Enzo with Katya. Tom loses control and has aggressive sex with Enzo without explicit consent. Both men are devastated. Enzo identifies what happened as sexual violence and ends the relationship. Tom later confesses he cannot handle sharing Enzo, and they agree to be exclusive.
Their relationship enters its most tender phase. Tom takes Enzo to a lake house for his birthday, where Enzo reveals the full story of his psoriasis for the first time. Tom kisses every scar on Enzo's body and explains that his nickname for Enzo, "Butterfly," signifies beauty, freedom, and metamorphosis. He gives Enzo a crumpled Monopoly get-out-of-jail-free card, promising to save him from any crisis.
Meanwhile, an informant willing to betray the Camorra is revealed to be Slava Rasputin, the youngest Rasputin brother, who harbors an obsession with his sister Katya and views the Ferrante brothers as unworthy of her. It was Slava who sent Cash to blackmail Enzo, and Slava who is now engineering a fake Bratva drug shipment to lure the Camorra to the port for an FBI arrest. He plans to overthrow Alex and seize control of the Bratva.
Tom reaches his breaking point. He arranges for Enzo's arrest on a minor charge and offers him a plea deal in his FBI office, confessing the truth: The FBI never dropped the Ferrante case, and the bureau is close to arresting all three brothers for life. Tom offers Enzo full immunity in exchange for cooperation. Enzo refuses, unwilling to betray his brothers Luca and Achilles. He slams the get-out-of-jail-free card against Tom's chest and declares their relationship over.
Enzo breaks off his engagement with Katya, coming out to her as gay. He then convenes an emergency family meeting where he comes out to his entire family and confesses the affair with Tom. His brothers' anger focuses on the strategic fallout rather than his sexuality, and both ultimately affirm their love for him. Luca orders all Camorra operations to go dark to evade the FBI.
Tom, devastated but resolved, secretly sabotages his own case. He visits Luca, reveals Slava as the informant and architect of the fake shipment, and proposes a deal: If the Camorra avoids the port on the night of the raid, the FBI will arrest Slava's soldiers while the Camorra eliminates Slava. Luca agrees and gives his blessing for Tom's relationship with Enzo. On the night of the operation, the FBI arrests 15 Bratva soldiers. Slava flees, and Enzo pursues, tortures, and kills him.
At dawn, Enzo returns to find Tom waiting outside his apartment. They share a passionate kiss, but Enzo tells Tom he needs time apart to work on his mental health, promising to return when he is ready. Over the following weeks, Enzo attends intensive therapy; his psoriasis nearly disappears. Tom faces an internal investigation into the botched operation, but Zeke protects him, and the inquiry closes without findings of wrongdoing. Tom is transferred to the counterterrorism division, eliminating any conflict of interest with the Camorra.
When Luca's wife, Sofia, is kidnapped by her bodyguard and lover, Jeremie Rasputin, and taken to Moscow, the Ferrante brothers assault a Bratva warehouse in Las Vegas before Luca departs alone for Russia. Enzo and Achilles return to New York. Recognizing his readiness, Enzo goes to Tom's apartment, where they reunite physically and emotionally.
The epilogue reveals the full scope of Tom's machinations: He had secretly met with Slava shortly after he and Enzo first began texting, offered Slava the Bratva throne, and engineered the entire fake drug shipment, always keeping a plan in place to save Enzo. Tom confesses everything to Enzo, who forgives him. Tom proposes outside the gay club where they first met, presenting a ring and telling Enzo that this time, he gets both a kiss and a ring. Enzo says yes, posts the moment to Instagram, and the novel closes with both men embracing their relationship openly as Tom is welcomed into the Ferrante family.
