Like many contemporary romance series, Navessa Allen’s Into Darkness novels, including Game On, are set within a shared literary universe. This narrative strategy, popularized by franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, allows authors to build a complex, interconnected world where characters and plotlines from one story can appear and evolve in another. Doing so rewards long-time readers with inside knowledge and a deeper sense of continuity, as the social fabric of the fictional world becomes richer with each installment. Game On continues this tradition by integrating key figures from the previous books, Lights Out and Caught Up. The protagonist, Tyler Neumann, is the best friend of Josh, a hacker and the son of a notorious serial killer who was a central character in a prior novel. In Lights Out, Josh develops a relationship with Aly Cappellucci, a nurse and former fling of Tyler. Although Tyler appeared in the previous novels primarily as Josh’s witty and morally flexible best friend, Game On reveals that many of his seemingly casual actions were occurring alongside a years-long effort to locate and destroy the father who abandoned him. By shifting Tyler from the sidelines to the center of the narrative, the novel recontextualizes a familiar character and explores motivations that earlier books only hinted at.
