Darius Max, Seth, and Caleb infiltrate Acrux Manor. From a window, they see a horrifying ritual in the courtyard where their families are being tortured and used to channel dark magic to Lavinia. Gabriel contacts Darius to inform him that Lionel and Lavinia are attacking The Burrows. Gabriel has foreseen that Xavier will die fighting Lionel unless Darius returns to the battle within minutes. The Heirs insist Darius go, while they opt to stay and rescue their families. Darius rushes back to the Burrows, where he sees Lionel attacking Xavier. Enraged, Darius intervenes, determined to kill Lionel.

Darcy fights alongside Orion, feeling her power flicker under Lavinia’s influence. Determined to kill Lavinia, they tunnel underground to emerge behind her. Darcy unleashes a massive blast of Phoenix fire, and they watch as Lavinia’s body is consumed, leaving only charred bones. However, as they celebrate their victory, the bones begin to reform as Lavinia is magically revitalized.

Now more powerful than ever, Lavinia reveals that Darcy’s magic is gone. She explains that a “Shadow Beast” curse has been secretly growing inside Darcy, feeding on her power and making her responsible for the recent murders at The Burrows. Darcy is horrified as she suddenly experiences memories of herself as the beast, killing guards. At Lavinia’s command, the curse takes full effect and Darcy transforms into a huge, monstrous creature. Compelled by Lavinia’s magic, Darcy begins killing Fae allies.

Tory leads the rebels in a desperate battle against Lionel’s overwhelming forces. Darcy appears in her beast form, and Tory does not recognize her, seeing only a monster. Tory attacks with Phoenix fire, but before she can deliver a killing blow, Orion tackles her. He reveals that the beast is Darcy, transformed by Lavinia’s curse. He tells Tory he must get Darcy away from the battle and that Tory must lead the army to victory. Now on her own, Tory spots Alejandro (the Nymph who murdered her father) and vows to kill him.

Geraldine watches in horror as Darcy transforms and attacks the rebels. Vowing to save her, Geraldine fights off the Nymphs. She sees Darcy overpower Orion and move in for the kill. Geraldine intervenes, healing Orion just before Darcy wounds her severely. Geraldine witnesses Mildred (one of the Dragon Fae who is loyal to Lionel) kill her friend Angelica. Grieving and enraged, Geraldine heals herself and swears vengeance on Mildred. She sees Orion chasing after Darcy, luring her away from the battle.

At Acrux Manor, Seth, Max, and Caleb devise a plan to stop the dark magic ritual. Max and Caleb need to go to the nearby Orion family estate to retrieve a magical implement that will allow them to close the portal that is feeding the magic. Seth agrees to create a diversion by using an illusion to impersonate Lionel and lure the Nymph guards away from the altar. His disguise is imperfect, but he successfully draws most of the Nymphs into the manor. He leads them into a bathroom, but they soon see through his illusion. Seth flees, leading them on a chase deeper into the house to buy Max and Caleb more time.

Under the sway of Lavinia’s curse, Darcy is driven to attack everyone, including her former friends and allies. She fights Orion and Geraldine, who desperately try to restrain her. Orion attempts to reach her with his words, and for a moment he almost breaks through, but Lavinia’s influence proves too strong. Darcy is about to kill Orion when Geraldine intervenes. Enraged, Darcy pursues Geraldine, causing a brief distraction but quickly turns her focus back to Orion.

Tory continues to fight, using her magic to hold back the Nymphs. Gabriel appears and warns her that he has foreseen the army’s annihilation if they do not retreat immediately. Trusting his vision, Tory orders a full retreat. The rebels obey, while Hamish and Catalina stay behind to defend the entrance to their stronghold. Tory refuses to leave, determined to kill Lionel and salvage the battle. Justin (Geraldine’s former fiancé) insists on staying by her side as they fight their way toward her father’s killer, Alejandro.

Caleb and Max race to the Orion estate, where they confront Stella (Lance Orion’s mother). Max uses his magic abilities to manipulate her emotions, and. Stella allows them to pass. Caleb retrieves the magical implement and they rush back to Acrux Manor. Max kills the remaining Nymph guards, and Caleb begins to close the magical rift. They hear Seth howling inside the manor and Max goes to help. As Max runs, he is injured and Caleb abandons closing the rift to help him. Caleb is also wounded and captured. Vard appears with Seth: their plan has failed. All three Heirs are captive and chained to the altar, their power now also feeding Lavinia.

Darius faces his father alone. As Darius gains the upper hand, he taunts Lionel by revealing he married Tory. Enraged, Lionel manages to stab Darius in the chest. As he lies dying, Darius’s last thought is of his love for Tory.

Orion lures Darcy away from the battle. He magically casts an illusion of their shared memories and a potential future, surrendering himself to her. The tactic works, and Darcy shifts back to her Fae form, horrified by what she’s done. Orion then watches as the silver rings in her eyes (the sign of their Elysian Mate bond) fade. Darcy realizes the curse has made her mortal. The curse begins to resurface, and Darcy pleads with Orion to leave because she is terrified of hurting him once the curse takes over again. As the beast begins to re-emerge, Orion tells Darcy to meet him the following morning. He takes off, determined to make Lavinia tell him how to break the curse. He discovers that Darius is dead. Overcome with grief and rage, he attacks Lavinia, but she is invincible.

Lavinia offers Orion a deal: she will free Darcy if he gives her his body for three moon cycles. During that time, his “body will be my playhouse to do whatever I wish with. I may cut it, whip it, burn it, and fuck it if the notion takes me” (983). Orion agrees, and they seal the pact with a vow that if either of them breaks the pact, they will die. Lavinia ushers him away.

Catalina and Hamish use the last of their power to protect the retreating rebels. Tyler arrives carrying Sofia, an injured Xavier, and a dying Geraldine. As Lionel attacks, Catalina and Hamish say goodbye to their children, knowing they must sacrifice themselves. As the younger Fae flee to safely, Catalina and Hamish face Lionel and temporarily hold him off. Refusing to be captured, they hold hands and take their own lives together.

With the rebels gone, Tory and Justin are the only ones left fighting. Justin saves Tory from an attack but is weakened. To save him, Tory forces him to retreat. Now alone, she isolates Alejandro, her father’s killer, from the other Nymphs. She overpowers and kills him. Her vengeance complete, Tory takes to the sky as the remaining Nymphs swarm below.

Gabriel seals the escape tunnels to protect the rebels. He sees a vision of Lionel finding Tory bent over Darius’s body and driving a knife into her back. To prevent this, Gabriel uses the last of his magic to completely seal the tunnel entrance, trapping himself outside. Lionel appears and captures the powerless Gabriel, intending to make him his new Seer. Gabriel sends out a psychic message, hoping Tory will receive it and use its guidance to win the war.

Tory searches the desolate battlefield looking for her friends and Darius. She finds Darius’s body. Devastated, she holds him, refusing to accept his death as Nymphs swarm toward her. As the Nymphs attack, her power erupts in a massive supernova of Phoenix fire, incinerating them all. She collapses sobbing over Darius’s body, then glimpses the psychic message Gabriel sent her. The message is cryptic but promises that “one chance awaits” (1008).
