When Darius returns to the Burrows, Tory greets him with a passionate declaration. After a complicated history, Tory acts with vulnerability by laying bare the intensity of her feelings. Their reunion marks a new stage in their relationship.

“I cried out as pain burrowed through the ruined stump at the end of my arm, unable to fight back in any way as she wielded her magic against me and something grew from the stump with agonising slowness.”

This quotation depicts the moment when Lavinia uses dark magic to fashion a new hand for Lionel. This moment signals Lavinia’s immense power as she enacts something that Lionel was unable to do for himself, binding the two of them even closer together.

“Reports of the sex magic that Roxanya (Tory) Vega has been using against the former Heirs have also been coming in thick and fast as it has recently been discovered that that too was a power the Phoenixes of legend once possessed.”

This quotation occurs in the falsified news report that Lionel circulates through the kingdom, spreading rumors about how Tory and Darcy seduced the Heirs into being their allies. It reveals the misogynistic logic at the heart of Lionel’s ambitions: He uses sexualized slander to depict the twins as unfit to rule.

“‘He worked at the palace when we killed the royals,’ Mamá said with a twisted smile on her lips that made my stomach knot with dread.”

This quotation occurs during one of Diego’s memories (which the twins access via his magical hat). Diego learned that his mother and his uncle, Alejandro, were responsible for killing the twins’ parents (under Lionel’s orders). This information sets Tory and Darcy on a quest to avenge their parents, which culminates in Tory killing Alejandro during the climactic final battle.

“Six were found and six were lost. These are the stones of the original twelve. All must be united to restore balance to the kingdom and reform the Zodiac Guild. Find the six we recovered within the Chalice of Flames.”

Orion reads this quotation aloud from the magical diary he inherited from his late father. The quotation provides crucial information about steps that must be taken before the Zodiac Guild can be revitalized (helping to support Tory and Darcy in their claim to the throne). It sets in motion Orion’s quest to find the remaining gemstones, which plays out over the remainder of the plot.

“I traded my life for theirs. I get one year to prove to her that I can give her the world then the stars will tear it away from her when they call me into their embrace.”

Darius speaks this quotation to Gabriel, providing context about the secret bargain. (Gabriel has learned about the bargain due to his psychic powers). Darius reveals his motivation by stating that he traded his life to protect Tory and Darcy, and he also reveals how he views his remaining time: a short opportunity to make Tory as happy as possible.

“‘Taking hold of every moment and making it count,’ I replied. ‘A life well lived should be full of adventure and danger and passion.’”

Tory speaks this quotation during a moment of physical and emotional intimacy with Darius, responding to his stated wish to stop time and remain sequestered away together. When she speaks this quotation, Tory is unaware that Darius’s time is limited, and she expresses these ideas while unconsciously reflecting the “carpe diem” values of a constrained time span.

“‘Silly boy, you’re all mine. Mine, mine, mine. My Acrux King,’ she said with a wild gleam in her eye and I fought harder to get free, fearing her power as she crushed me within it and held me at her mercy.”

This quotation depicts Lavinia taunting Lionel and making him uncomfortable while asserting her dominance. While Lionel relies on Lavinia’s power and assumes he will be able to control her, moments like these reveal that the dynamic between the two of them is more complex.

“‘Looks like I trust you now, sanguis frater,’ he said, offering me a dark smile which made my fangs prickle. ‘Seems so,’ I said, returning his smile as we both raised our hands and used our combined magic to blast the roof from the temple.”

This quotation captures an exchange between Caleb and Orion (both members of the Vampire Order). When they work together on a dangerous mission to destroy the dark altar at the Nymph temple, Caleb and Orion end up feeding from one another to heal and augment their magical power (this is typically forbidden). By feeding from one another, they form a powerful magical bond which subverts their previous history of tension and rivalry.

“I fought with the chaotic, hungry thing dragging my flames into its hold and suddenly my power burst from me in an explosion that slammed out of my body and into my sister’s, sending me and Tory flying apart like a shockwave had struck us.”

During the mission to destroy the dark altar, Darcy experiences strange symptoms and is compelled to attack her sister without understanding why. This bizarre episode foreshadows the presence of Lavinia’s curse but Darcy is not initially aware of what is happening to her.

“‘It’s like there’s a chasm inside me,’ I said tightly, placing a hand against my chest where I felt it. ‘And out of it spills rage and anger and hate. But it takes from me too. It sucks away my magic, feeding on it like some hungry animal…’”

After the strange events during the raid on the temple, Darcy struggles to describe the experience to Gabriel and Orion. Her bizarre symptoms don’t seem to make sense, especially since she believes Lavinia’s curse has been dissipating. Without knowing exactly what is happening to her, Darcy manages to capture the viscerally terrifying effect of losing self-control.

“‘We’re at war, Roxy,’ he said slowly. ‘And I can’t believe that the stars would be so kind as to let us all see the other side of it. One way or another, I will take on my father and destroy him to negate the threat he poses to all of us. But that pledge doesn’t come without risk.’”

Darius speaks this quotation to Tory (using the nickname “Roxy”), explaining to her that he is determined to defeat his father. While the twins and their allies all despise Lionel, Darius has the strongest personal vendetta. He spent years watching his father abuse his mother and brother, and Darius wants to affirm his own legitimacy by undermining his father’s power once and for all.

“For now, but when the time comes, you will both want the throne, and you will fight to claim it from each other.”

While Tory and Darcy are training together at a remote magical palace, they receive a prophecy that they will eventually engage in rivalry over the throne. This prophecy threatens to undermine the fierce loyalty that the twins have always shown to one another. Their allies have also rallied around a collective cause, not an individual one, and it would be devastating to ask them to choose between the twins.

“He had cursed and screamed while he died, all of it contained within the silencing bubble I had cast while I watched his agony play out within his eyes, and I was filled with the satisfaction of knowing he would never again refer to me as Lame Lionel.”

This quotation describes Lionel’s memory of watching his brother die. Years earlier, Lionel engineered the death of his more popular brother because he was bitter about being bullied, revealing the roots of his insidious need for power and control.

“I’d parted ways with him the day Clara had died and Lionel had bonded me to Darius. And if he wasn’t me then that meant Darcy wasn’t herself in that vision either. […] I was possessive of my Blue, and […] to become who she was today, she’d had to be broken, put under pressure so she could emerge like coal into a diamond.”

This quotation occurs after Orion and Darcy see a vision of an alternative reality, prompting Orion to reflect on how the version of himself which he saw in the vision differs from the reality of his lived experience. He also thinks about how, while he hates the idea of Darcy suffering, he accepts that her suffering has made her stronger and even more resilient.

“‘We’ll make our own destiny,’ Darcy agreed and we exchanged a dark smile before turning and heading out of the throne room, striding through the palace towards the golden gates which I knew in my heart would be standing open to let us leave.”

This quotation occurs as Darcy and Tory leave their training grounds at the isolated palace, confident that they can take on the next stage of their fight against Lionel. They have defied the prophecy that predicted a rivalry would develop between them and experience a fleeting moment of optimism, having strengthened both their bond and their emotional powers.

“‘ENOUGH!’ I roared a Dragon’s roar, my voice resounding through the entire theatre until everyone in the room fell deathly quiet and stared at me in shock.”

This quotation captures Lionel’s intense rage after he is publicly mocked. Lionel’s intense need for power and control makes him extremely vulnerable to embarrassment and criticism, and this reaction captures his emotional immaturity. Because he is so readily provoked, he is a dangerously volatile leader.

“I am in love with Darcy Vega, heir to the throne of Solaria, daughter of the Savage King—who by the way was tricked by Lionel Acrux into being an evil sonuvabitch. And I know you all think I’m a complete waste of oxygen.”

After conflict with Darcy about whether or not to conceal their romantic relationship, Orion capitulates to her desire to go public. He openly declares his love for her in front of the entire rebel community. Orion exhibits trust and vulnerability, taking the risk of going public about their illicit love.

“This will exonerate you. For how can you be shamed for foul-playing fornication when you have been chosen by the stars as my lady Darcy’s one true mate? No one in Solaria will question their decision.”

Geraldine speaks this quotation, revealing the full positive impact of the Elysian Mate bond between Darcy and Orion. Once the bond is revealed, Orion is considered fully acquitted in the eyes of all the Fae (and thus no longer subject to Power Shaming). He and Darcy can be together freely and happily, with no criticisms or stigma.

“Because I’m dying, Roxy.”

Darius speaks this quotation when he finally reveals the truth about his bargain to Tory. After concealing the secret for almost the entirety of the plot, he finally concedes the truth, setting the stage for the somber and tragic mood that dominates the final portion of the novel.

“‘Their families are in danger,’ Gabriel explained. ‘Darius went with them to help.’”

Gabriel speaks to Tory and Darcy, explaining why the Heirs have unexpectedly left the Burrows. While it was dangerous for them to leave (especially as a group), Gabriel reveals the rationale behind their decision. Because loyalty is such a deeply held value amongst the rebels, the Heirs couldn’t resist going to the aid of their families.

“‘Lavinia found a way to connect herself to the shadows again,’ I breathed in horror as realisation dawned and the magnitude of this fucked up situation fell on me. ‘She must be drawing on the shadows via this, using their power to fuel the opening and allow the darkness to slip through to our realm once more.’”

Darius speaks this quotation after he and the other Heirs arrive at Acrux Manor to see what is happening to their families. To their horror, they realize that Lavinia is still harnessing dark magic power. This moment marks a shift from confidence to horror for the Heirs as they realize that they do not have the upper-hand and are in fact deeply vulnerable.

“‘The Shadow Beast has taken root in you,’ Lavinia purred as I snapped out of the memories and looked at her in terror, shaking my head in refusal of what I already knew was true. ‘It feeds on your power piece by piece by piece. You fought it well, but not well enough. And now it is sated and you are nothing but a mortal bound to a beast. And that beast is mine.’”

When they meet in the final battle, Lavinia finally explains the nature of the curse to Darcy. She alludes to the beast that is now lodged within Darcy’s inner nature, causing her to periodically lose control and lash out with violence.
