In 2017, Georgia attends the wedding of her friend Ximena’s daughter, Mercedes. Soon after, she sees on Instagram that her own daughter, Molly, has graduated early and will be attending Columbia University to study public health. Georgia then learns from a church website that her estranged father, Reverend Ezekiel Owens, died months earlier. The online obituary makes no mention of her existence. Distraught, she wanders into a synagogue, where she’s comforted by a kind rabbi. She’s later found sitting in a park by a police officer, Kai Yazzie. Kai, who is Diné (Navajo), offers her comfort.
Kai and Georgia begin a romantic relationship, and he gives her the nickname k’aalógii, the Diné word for “butterfly.” After a traumatic on-the-job incident in which Kai witnesses a teenage boy die by suicide, Kai rushes to Georgia and confesses his deep feelings for her. Their relationship becomes physical. She later confides in him about her bipolar disorder, and he accepts her, reciprocating her vulnerability by sharing about his family’s history of heart disease.
From 2020 to 2024, Georgia and Kai live together in Atlanta, where she works as an office manager for an OB-GYN, Dr. Carlsson. At work, Georgia recognizes the symptoms of PPP in a new mother named Iris and successfully intervenes, ensuring that the woman gets psychiatric help.
