Background

Series Context: Windy City Series

Tomforde’s Windy City series consists of Mile High (2022), The Right Move (2023), Caught Up (2023), Play Along (2024), and Rewind It Back (2025). The series began as a self-published endeavor, but has since been traditionally published in the US by Hachette Book Group and in the UK by Hodder.

Mile High follows the hate-to-love romance between a hockey player named Zanders and a flight attendant for the team’s plane named Stevie. The Right Move follows Stevie’s best friend, Indy, who is a flight attendant for the Chicago hockey team, and her fake-dating scheme turned real romance with Stevie’s brother, Ryan, who is an NBA player. Caught Up follows a star MLB pitcher and single father, Kai Rhodes, who develops a romance with his kid’s new nanny, Miller (who is the daughter of his coach, Emmett Montgomery). Play Along follows the romance between Kai’s brother, Isaiah, who is another player on Chicago’s Windy City Warriors MLB team, and the team’s athletic trainer, Kennedy. Rewind It Back follows hockey player Rio and his second-chance romance with his childhood sweetheart Hallie.

In Her Own League (2026) is a spinoff novel set in the same world as the Windy City series, which follows the romance between the new franchise owner, Reese Remington, and the Windy City Warriors baseball coach, Emmett Montgomery. While it is not necessary to read the original series prior to reading the spinoff, In Her Own League does include characters previously seen in earlier installments, such as Kai and Isaiah Rhodes, Miller, Max, Kennedy Kay, and Arthur Remington.

Author Context: Liz Tomforde

Liz Tomforde is an originally self-published author who has recently been traditionally published due to the success of her Windy City series. Tomforde began posting the first draft of Mile High on Wattpad—an online storytelling platform—but later published it independently. Mile High became popular on TikTok, which led to a publishing deal. She writes contemporary sports romances that showcase healthy relationships, witty banter, found family, and a considerable amount of “spice” (TikTok slang for sexual content).

Tomforde was a flight attendant for an NHL team prior to becoming a full-time author, an early career similar to that of some of her characters (Stevie and Indy). Her first novel was written in 2020 when the hockey season was postponed due to the global pandemic, drawing on her own experiences during her flight attendant career.

The Windy City series is Tomforde’s debut series and has reached its conclusion with the publication of In Her Own League. Her next book will be part of another sports romance series, Wilder Woods. The four-part series will follow four new athletes, three new sports teams, and one large, interconnected cast spanning all installments. Set in Northern California, the series will focus primarily on a few siblings introduced in Rewind It Back, and begin with the installment of Cardinal Rule (2026).

Tomforde’s Windy City series is in conversation with other contemporary sports romances, such as Rachel Reid’s Heated Rivalry (2019), Hannah Grace’s Icebreaker (2022), and Tessa Bailey’s Fangirl Down (2024), with sports romances becoming an increasingly prominent subgenre of romance.
