Chapter 28 Summary: “Sebastian”
Two weeks after leaving Maya in India, a despondent Sebastian meets his friends Xavier and Killian at a bar in New York. He drinks heavily and smokes cigars to numb the pain of what he perceives as Maya’s rejection. He has been ignoring her calls and texts. Xavier expresses concern over Sebastian’s self-destructive behavior, but Sebastian rebuffs him, threatening to end their friendship when Xavier brings up Maya.
After, Sebastian leaves, he stumbles into his house, where he is tormented by thoughts of Maya. The doorbell rings repeatedly, and when Sebastian angrily answers it, he finds Maya on his doorstep. She is wearing the locket and holding the letter he wrote her years earlier, when they attended boarding school together.
Chapter 29 Summary: “Maya”
Maya enters Sebastian’s house and tries to explain that she never received his letter. Sebastian, drunk and furious, accuses her of playing cruel games and reveals that after he sent the letter, he received a response from her, which he recites from memory. According to Sebastian, Maya’s response dismissed his feelings and asked him to pretend the letter never happened.
Maya is horrified to realize that “for fourteen years, [Sebastian] lived with the mistaken knowledge that I knew how he felt and didn’t care” (254). She swears again that she never received the letter and never wrote a response. Sebastian says it doesn’t matter because her recent rejection at the wedding in India confirmed that she doesn’t care for him. Maya finally confesses her true feelings, explaining that she was scared of their changing relationship and the risk of getting hurt. She admits that the two weeks without him have been empty and that she reciprocates all of his feelings. Sebastian is initially resistant, but when Maya kisses him, he kisses her back with equal passion, and they reconcile.
They agree that they are officially dating, and Sebastian explains that he doesn’t immediately want to resume their sexual relationship. He wants them to spend more time exploring their new dynamic first. The chapter ends with Sebastian’s letter, in which he confides to Maya that he loves her passionately.
Chapter 30 Summary: “Sebastian”
Later that night, Maya falls asleep in Sebastian’s arms. He reflects that while some might call him a fool for taking her back, he doesn’t care about the risks. He has loved her for so long that a life without her is unimaginable. Now that he knows she returns his feelings, he feels a sense of peace and relief for the first time in 14 years.
Chapter 31 Summary: “Maya”
A week later, Sebastian takes Maya on their first official date, an elaborate culinary tour of New York City. They discuss their new relationship, acknowledging that they have a lot to figure out regarding her parents’ expectations and deadline (they want her engaged before her next birthday). They run into Maya’s aunt but claim they are spending time together working on the new product line. The encounter heightens Maya’s fears about her family finding out about their relationship before she is ready. Sebastian then takes Maya back to his house for the final part of the date.
Chapter 32 Summary: “Maya”
Sebastian cooks for Maya at his home. As they prepare the meal together, she finds herself increasingly attracted to him. During their meal, Sebastian confides in Maya about the immense pressure he feels regarding the upcoming launch event. He reveals a deal he made with his father: If the launch is a success, he can quit his corporate marketing job to become a full-time chef. He then shares the source of his anxiety: When he acted as head chef for a restaurant opening years earlier, a guest died from a peanut allergy. He has carried the guilt for years, fearing a similar tragedy could happen again. Maya reassures him that it wasn’t his fault and praises his courage for pursuing his dream despite his fears.
Chapter 33 Summary: “Sebastian”
Over the next month, Maya and Sebastian secretly continue their relationship while working intensely on preparing for the launch of the frozen food line. Their relationship progresses: They begin a sexual relationship that is very pleasurable for both of them, and they declare their love for one another.
Chapter 34 Summary: “Maya”
A month into their relationship, Maya tells her friends (Sloane, Ayana, Vivian, Isabella, and Alessandra) that she and Sebastian are dating. They are unsurprised. Maya asks them to keep the relationship a secret until after the launch event to avoid pressure from her parents. Meanwhile, Sebastian is at a poker night with his friends—Killian, Xavier, Kai, Vuk, Dominic, and Dante. Killian becomes frustrated when everyone is distracted by texting their partners. Joking, he suggests they join the women (who are at a bowling alley) and to his dismay, the men abandon the game and leave to do just that.
Chapter 35 Summary: “Maya”
Maya is thrilled when Sebastian and the other men arrive at the bowling alley. Once she sobers up, the group splits into two teams for a game. Sebastian wagers that the loser must do whatever the winner wants for a week. His team wins, and as he and Maya kiss, they are interrupted by Maya’s sister, Neha. Alone, Neha confronts Maya, expressing her disapproval of the secret relationship. Despite Maya’s pleas to wait until after the launch, Neha issues an ultimatum: Maya must tell their parents about Sebastian at a family dinner the following week, or Neha will do it for her.
Chapter 36 Summary: “Sebastian”
A week later, Sebastian and Maya attend dinner with both of their families at the Laurents’ house. Before they have a chance to reveal their relationship, Maya’s father, Neal, confronts Sebastian’s father, Michel, for secretly having dinner with Charles Whitaker, the CEO of their biggest competitor. Neal accuses Michel of betrayal, arguing that the meeting creates damaging rumors and undermines their partnership at a crucial time right before a major product launch.
Michel dismisses Neal’s concerns and becomes defensive. The argument escalates until Michel tells Neal to leave his house. Neal declares their friendship over and forbids any personal communication between the families outside of work. The Singhs leave abruptly. Maya and Sebastian are left in shock: their plans to announce their relationship shattered by their fathers’ feud.
Chapters 28-36 Analysis
Maya’s arrival at Sebastian’s house with his long-lost love letter initiates a raw confrontation where both characters must abandon their defensive postures. Sebastian’s initial furious question, “Is this why you showed up, unannounced, to my house on a Friday night? To torture me some more?” (253), stems from a deep-seated pain, further revealed when he recites from memory the cruel, forged rejection he believed was from her. For their relationship to move forward, Maya must drop her characteristic guardedness and confess her own fears, admitting that the potential pain of losing him “would devastate me more than never having you to begin with” (256). His admission that he carries guilt and fear—lamenting, “If I don’t know what the problem is, I can’t fix it, and it can happen again” (277)—illustrates how Perfectionism Masks Deep-Seated Insecurities. Outwardly, Sebastian projects an aura of supreme confidence and control in the culinary world, but his anxiety reveals this persona is a defense mechanism against the trauma of past failure. Making a deal with his father to quit his corporate job and return to cooking full-time is not a simple career change but a high-stakes gamble on his ability to overcome this trauma. By confiding in Maya, he extends a level of trust that transforms their dynamic, allowing her to see the vulnerable man behind the arrogant rival and solidifying their bond through shared intimacy.
The newfound emotional and sexual intimacy between the couple is reflected when food items like whiskey, honey, and chocolate syrup are integrated into their lovemaking. This scene explicitly links sensory pleasure with emotional vulnerability, wherein food serves as Sebastian’s primary means for expressing desire and tenderness. The act of cooking for and with Maya further allows him to share his core passion in a way that transcends their competitive history and builds a foundation for a future shared domestic life. External pressures begin to encroach on Maya and Sebastian’s burgeoning romance almost immediately, primarily through familial demands that highlight The Conflict Between Family Loyalty and Personal Autonomy. This tension first appears when Maya’s sister, Neha, discovers their secret relationship and delivers an ultimatum: Maya must inform their parents, or Neha will. Neha’s stance is not born of malice but of a rigid adherence to familial duty, which she prioritizes over her sister’s desire for control over her own life. The conflict escalates exponentially after a feud erupts between the previously close-knit families. Neal Singh displays confusion, pain, and betrayal when Michel Laurent refuses to explain why he took a secret meeting with one of the Singh family’s rivals. The absence of appropriate communication between the two men reflects how strained communication has plagued Maya and Sebastian’s relationship as well.
Neal’s furious accusation, “I’m calling you a traitor,” (313) shatters the families’ bond, transforming Maya and Sebastian’s romance from a private secret into a forbidden alliance. Their personal happiness is now set in direct opposition to their fathers’ feud, forcing them to navigate their loyalty to each other as well as their loyalty to their families. While the feud between their families creates a conflict for Maya and Sebastian, it also gives them another shared project to collaborate on: uncovering the truth behind Charles Whitaker’s schemes, and finding out what is really going on. Because they are now lovers as well as business partners, they have additional incentive for this endeavor to succeed, and a newfound ability to work together effectively. Maya and Sebastian solidify their relationship by taking on a new project together and working as allies.
