As the Aran dead rise and a Fey wave of magic users destroys the last stone barricades, Tisaanah and Max prepare to die together—until the Roseteeth Company arrives from the north under Brayan, splitting the enemy and keeping Ara barely alive.

In a brief lull, the scholar Vardir appears with urgent news: overuse of the Lejaras has torn the underlying structure of magic, and a total collapse is imminent unless all three Lejaras are simultaneously wielded to rebalance and destroy them. The act would require a location powerful enough to channel that force. Nura would not listen, so he came to them. One of Nura’s soldiers kills him before he can say more. Tisaanah’s wayfinder blazes and points inland toward Nura.

Max and Tisaanah fight their way through the hordes of undead soldiers toward the ruins of the Towers, where they sense Nura. Max confronts her alone. They fight, but Nura is weakened and erratic. Max recognizes her deep-seated fear and pain. He pins her down, pleading with her to see the destruction she has wrought. For a moment, she seems to consider his words, but ultimately her anger wins out, and she reaches within herself for her power. Max, feeling this through his deep connection to all magic, stabs her twice, and as she collapses, Tisaanah arrives and slices Nura’s throat with Il’Sahaj. As Nura dies, Max seizes the amber Lejara of Creation from her hand.

Nura’s death does not stop her army. Pulled to safety, Max examines the amber Lejara and resists its seductive pull toward godlike creative power, confirming that they must not use it. Both feel the worsening disruption in deep magic and accept that Vardir was right. They have creation and the broken shards of change, but still need the death Lejara. When Tisaanah notices the Ilyzath mark shifting on Max’s palm and her own golden mark pointing out to sea, Max connects Ilyzath’s old warnings about its missing pieces to the Lejaras: The third is inside Ilyzath. They use a Stratagram to teleport there together.

Aefe’s initial power fades as she watches Caduan weaken. A shift in the deep magic delivers violent visions: Nura’s face, the amber Lejara, and Ilyzath’s white towers. Caduan felt it too. Before she can stop him, he kisses her, tells her the future can be different, and vanishes.

Arriving at Ilyzath’s entrance, Max and Tisaanah find the sky cracked and red, Ara burning in the distance. Max spots Alliance ships on the horizon; Tisaanah believes she sees Serel leading them. She sends a butterfly across the sea as a beacon of thanks. Neither is ready to enter, but the doors open at Max’s touch, and the floor drops beneath them.

Aefe runs to the shore in panic, her magic erupting as uncontrolled bursts of growth and decay. The Fey commander Meajqa follows, warning that the Fey must retreat if Caduan is dead. Aefe refuses. She reaches through her magic across the sea, finds Caduan’s distant heartbeat, and uses it as a tether to teleport after him.

Ilyzath traps Tisaanah in a hallucination of her enslavement under Esmaris, culminating in a vision of Max dead in a closet. Without magic, she nearly surrenders to the illusion, but she touches her butterfly necklace and feels the Stratagram for home engraved on its back. The proof of her real life shatters the dream. She wakes in a silent, white hallway and sets off to find Max.

Max wakes in the prison of Ilyzath expecting the burning vision of his dead sister, Kira. Instead, the child in his vision has his features and green eyes the color of sunlit leaves—his future daughter, her hands appearing covered in blood. He reaches through the flames to hold her face, tells her she is not real yet, and breaks the dream.

Ilyzath’s voice welcomes him back, noting that its missing pieces—the Lejaras—are near. Before he can ask anything, approaching footsteps reveal not Tisaanah but Caduan.

Aefe runs through Ilyzath’s disorienting halls, driven by the need to find Caduan. She is tormented by the voice of Ilyzath, which tells her she has always belonged in death. She pushes past the despair by focusing on her love for Caduan and her will to live.

Caduan, already holding the Lejara of Creation, confronts Max and demands that he hand over the other Lejaras. Max, wounded and magically depleted, tries to reason with him, warning that the magic is destroying the world. Caduan, consumed by his quest for justice, refuses to listen. They fight a brutal, physical duel. Caduan, though injured, is faster and stronger. He impales Max with his rapier. As Max is about to die, Tisaanah arrives and attacks Caduan, who teleports away before she can land a finishing blow.

Tisaanah binds Max’s severe abdominal wound with her shirt. He confirms that Caduan took the Lejara; a silent look establishes that they cannot leave to get help. She supports his weight as Ilyzath urges them deeper. Max speculates that the Lejaras were created inside Ilyzath—its warnings about missing pieces now make sense. He asks her to leave him; she refuses, insisting he keep talking. He tells her he loves her and that their time together was worth everything. She returns the sentiment through tears. His voice eventually stops.

Tisaanah reaches a subterranean chamber where a sapling grows at the center of a black pool, cycling through life and death. This is the Lejara of Death. Caduan is there, holding the other two Lejaras. Ilyzath whispers that she must wield all three to heal the world. As Tisaanah prepares to confront Caduan, Aefe appears, blocking her path. Aefe, calling Tisaanah a fool, takes the shards and approaches Caduan.

Aefe shows Caduan the shards of the Lejara of Change, insisting that she can save him, but the moment they are exposed, all three Lejaras align and sweep them into the deepest layer of magic, where the world’s fabric is visibly torn and bleeding. Aefe realizes that Tisaanah was right. She forces Caduan to face what his plan will truly destroy. His anger becomes regret. He reveals that sealing the deep magic will also destroy Aefe, since she was created by it; he cannot save her. She accepts this—they will go together. She whispers that endings are not absolute. Together they wield all three Lejaras and stitch the world closed.

As the world tears apart, Tisaanah feels Aefe’s magic reach out, struggling to contain the destructive forces. With Max near death, Tisaanah presses their palms together, combining what little magic they have left. She offers their power to Aefe and Caduan, adding Valtain and Solarie magic to their Fey magic in a final push to reshape and save the world.

In a space between worlds, Aefe sees Caduan at a doorway representing death. She realizes there is nothing left for death to take from her, as the only thing she needs is with him. She tells him she is not afraid. He takes her hand, and together they cross the threshold into the unknown.

Tisaanah has a vision of her childhood home in Nyzerene, where she is reunited with her mother. Her mother tells her she is proud of the beautiful woman she has become and that she has survived. She gives Tisaanah a final kiss and tells her to live before fading away. Tisaanah awakens on the outer platform of Ilyzath next to Max. The deep magic is gone; the marks on their hands have vanished, and Max’s eyes have returned to their natural brown. The war is over. As the sun rises, they embrace, overwhelmed with relief and hope.

One week later, Max and Tisaanah begin peace negotiations with the Fey, now led by Meajqa. In Caduan’s absence, Meajqa agrees to a tentative ceasefire. After hours of tense discussion, Max and Tisaanah break the stalemate by speaking plainly of their exhaustion with war and their willingness to build trust. Meajqa, though wary, agrees to try. Later, Tisaanah watches the Fey armada depart, feeling proud. In the following weeks, Ara begins to rebuild. Max, as acting Arch Commandant, calls a council meeting and declares his intention to disband the Orders, arguing that the institution is corrupt. The council reluctantly agrees. Tisaanah tells Iya that instead of mourning the old Orders, they should create a new, better institution in its place.

With the Orders disbanded, Ara faces a leadership crisis. Tare, Queen Sesri’s former advisor, secretly meets with Max. He reveals he faked Sesri’s death years ago and sent her out of the country to save her from Zeryth and Nura.
