Activities

Use this activity to engage all types of learners, while requiring that they refer to and incorporate details from the text over the course of the activity.

Field Guide

In this activity, students will create a field guide to a chosen location, explaining tools in the area that may be considered for survival based on text details.

Consider the skills and knowledge Sam is able to acquire by living in the wilderness. Use Sam’s experience to create a field guide to a location of your choice to teach individuals what they might do if they were in a survival situation in the location. Consider these questions as you develop your field guide.

  • Select a location for your survival guide.
  • How can you make use of pictures and information in your guide?
  • What types of plants and animals might you find in your chosen location?
  • Where might someone find shelter in your selected location?
  • Where can water be located?
  • Can you include a map of the area for others to reference?
  • What poisonous plants or dangerous animals should individuals avoid?
  • What conclusions might individuals draw from watching animals?

Share the location you selected for your field guide along with a few helpful tips that are not mentioned in the novel.
