Long Answer

1. When Sam first enters the wilderness, he struggles to complete simple tasks like building a fishing hook or creating fire. Though his first attempts are not successful, Sam meets Bill, who teaches him how to build a fire. Sam is prepared in other ways because he occasionally makes references to books he has read and goes to the library to acquire more knowledge. Sam’s resilience is an important part of his journey and his desire to keep trying; even when he fails, it is inspiring. (Various chapters)

2. The animals benefit Sam in a variety of ways. For example, Jesse Coon James becomes an important friend to Sam by helping him obtain mussels from the rivers; The Baron provides Sam with entertainment; and Frightful catches prey for Sam to eat. Additionally, the animals warn him when danger is nearby and of the changing seasons, and they reveal to him what foods are safe to eat.
