Plot Summary

In 1975, Dave Boyle, Jimmy Marcus, and Sean Devine—three 11-year-old friends in a Boston neighborhood—are out playing together when two men in a car pass by. The men, Henry and George, ask the boys if they’d like to go for a ride. Though Jimmy and Sean decline, Dave agrees. He gets in the car and isn’t heard from for four days. When he returns, it is assumed that he has been molested. He never explains what happened to him during his time away, and for the rest of his life, he faces his decision to enter the car that day. The boys’ trauma, specifically Dave Boyle’s, is a springboard for the rest of the narrative.

Twenty-five years later, the men are reunited. Dave is married to Celeste and has a young son named Michael; Dave is still struggling to deal with his trauma. Aside from his sense of never belonging, Dave also faces the shame of his own pedophilic urges. Sean is a homicide detective dealing with a messy separation from his wife, Lauren. Jimmy is married to his second wife, Annabeth (Celeste’s cousin)—having lost his first wife, Marita, to cancer—and father to three daughters: Katie, Nadine, and Sara. After a short stint in prison, Jimmy swore off crime and now runs a corner store. When Jimmy’s oldest daughter, Katie, is murdered, Sean takes on the case.

On the same night that Katie is murdered, Dave returns home covered in blood. He tells Celeste that he was mugged, but she doesn’t believe him. Celeste’s suspicions of Dave are matched by the police, who begin investigating him for Katie’s murder. Once Jimmy learns of the suspicion falling on Dave, he endeavors to take justice into his own hands. However, it is revealed that Dave didn’t kill Katie, but he did kill somebody: a pedophile. Dave tries to explain this to Jimmy, but Jimmy kills Dave anyway.

After Dave’s death, the police discover that two 13-year-old boys murdered Katie; one of them is Silent Ray, the younger, mute brother of Katie’s boyfriend, Brendan. Though Sean and Celeste know that Jimmy is responsible for Dave’s sudden disappearance, they have no proof. Jimmy decides to take back his hold over the neighborhood and reenter the world of crime to protect those he loves. Sean vows to take down Jimmy. Dave, only in death, finds peace.

Mystic River is a poignant exploration of human nature in the trappings of police procedural. Through the morally complex characters, the novel considers the lasting imprint of trauma and childhood friendships and evaluates the true meaning of loyalty and justice.
