One Big Happy Family

Julie Parker is a 54-year-old woman who runs Parker Towing, a Seattle-area business her grandfather founded. Hands-on and fiercely independent, Julie still takes service calls herself, much to the frustration of Huxley, her longtime office manager. She has always assumed her son, Nick, will eventually take over the company, but he keeps deferring the conversation. Julie is also hiding a secret from her two adult children: She is dating Heath, the owner of a roofing company who is 12 years her junior, and she feels self-conscious about the age difference.

Julie's daughter, Dana, is an accountant struggling to move on from Axel, an employee at Parker Towing who repossesses vehicles for clients with missed payments. Axel has dated Dana on and off for about two years, repeatedly declaring his love before abruptly ending things. Before Dana can leave for a family holiday, Axel appears at her condo and says he misses her. Convinced he wants to restart the cycle, Dana tells him to leave her alone and sends him away, heartbroken. Her brother Nick, meanwhile, proposes a different holiday plan. Their father, Eldon, died the previous January, and Nick wants to cancel the belated honeymoon he and his wife, Blair, had planned and instead spend Christmas at the family's mountain cabin to honor Eldon's memory. Dana immediately agrees.

Blair is a gerontologist nutritionist at a retirement community. She has irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a condition that governs much of her daily life and flares under stress. She supports Nick's plan despite dreading the presence of her mother, Gwen, a retired schoolteacher who recently moved to the Seattle area. Blair and Gwen have been emotionally estranged for most of Blair's life. When Blair was four, her baby brother Robby died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Gwen fell into a prolonged depression and effectively disappeared as a parent. Blair eventually moved in with her Uncle Paul, her late father's brother, at 15 after a severe bullying incident at school. Paul owns Nothing After '72, a store selling replacement parts for classic muscle cars, and he has been quietly discussing selling the business to Nick, who has not told Julie about his interest.

At a family dinner, Julie agrees to the cabin Christmas, hiding her disappointment about losing her planned quiet holiday with Heath. She then reveals she has been seeing someone. Dana is hurt that her mother kept a boyfriend secret but eventually accepts the apology, finding the age gap more amusing than troubling. Another complication arises when Heath's children, 10-year-old Madeline and 8-year-old Wyatt, need to spend Christmas with him after his ex-wife Tiffany's boyfriend invites Tiffany to the Bahamas. Julie insists they all come to the cabin, along with the family dog, Rufus.

The cabin is a 6,000-square-foot, six-bedroom mountain house. Julie and Heath arrive early to decorate, and she warns him about the house's acoustic quirk: Conversations on one floor carry clearly to others unless doors are closed. Julie personalizes each bedroom with Christmas themes and enlarged photos of Eldon, moving both Nick and Dana to tears. Gwen, however, complains about sharing a bathroom and privately insults Nick to Julie, saying Blair deserved someone with better career prospects. Julie furiously defends her son. Despite these tensions, Gwen proves surprisingly warm with Heath's children, slipping into her old schoolteacher role.

Complications multiply. The group's Christmas tree turns out to have been marked by a cougar, forcing a return to the tree farm. Tiffany's boyfriend dumps her before their Bahamas trip, and Julie impulsively invites Tiffany to the cabin. Meanwhile, Huxley calls to report that Axel has been shot in the thigh during a repossession gone wrong. Julie decides not to tell Dana, fearing her daughter will rush to Axel's side and get pulled back into the relationship.

Blair and Gwen have an explosive confrontation in which Blair unleashes decades of resentment, detailing how Gwen abandoned her emotionally after Robby's death and never showed up for her in any meaningful way. Gwen weeps and says the wedding was her wake-up call: Seeing Julie in the mother-of-the-bride role made her realize what she had lost. Blair tells Gwen she is not ready to discuss reconciliation during the trip.

The holiday's biggest crisis arrives when Nick enthusiastically describes Paul's business and Julie realizes her son wants to buy the store rather than take over Parker Towing. Hurt and shocked, Julie missteps at the top of the staircase and falls. She fractures her left arm and is briefly knocked unconscious. At the hospital, the doctor confirms she will recover fully.

While Julie is hospitalized, Huxley arrives at the cabin with Axel, who has just been discharged and is too weak to be left alone. Dana is shocked and furious at seeing Axel and at learning her mother hid his injury. After a moment of panic, she tells Axel he can stay. Julie returns on pain medication that loosens her inhibitions. At dinner, she notices Blair declining soft cheese and blurts out that Blair must be pregnant. To redirect the conversation, the adults launch a scheme to casually mention Dana's fake boyfriend "Jared," an invented investment banker meant to make Axel think Dana has moved on. The plan collapses as the adults stumble over the details.

Late one night, Axel confesses to Dana that he keeps leaving because he believes she will eventually realize he is not good enough for her. Dana dismisses the explanation until Axel describes lying shot in the street, thinking only of her and regretting what he lost. He drops to one knee and proposes. Dana accepts.

In a quieter conversation, Gwen points out a flaw in Blair and Nick's birth control method, noting that Blair herself was conceived the same way. Gwen buys a pregnancy test during a solo shopping trip. Blair takes it and discovers she is pregnant. She tells Nick, who is thrilled. Blair shares the news with Gwen, who hugs her for the first time since early childhood. Blair breaks down, releasing years of grief. They agree to see a therapist together after the holidays, beginning as friends rather than trying to immediately recapture a mother-daughter bond.

Julie reconciles with Nick over his career decision, telling him she wants him to be happy. Axel privately proposes buying into Parker Towing as Julie's business partner, revealing he recently inherited two million dollars from the estranged, wealthy father who abandoned his mother. Julie is intrigued and agrees to discuss the proposal after the holidays. Dana and Nick also make a predawn trip to a meadow their father loved, sharing memories and toasting Eldon with whiskey-laced coffee.

On Christmas Eve night, Heath tells Julie he loves her. Julie panics and says she wants to break up, retreating downstairs. There, Tiffany helps her recognize that her fear stems from Heath being her equal, someone she cannot control the way she managed her marriage to Eldon. Heath, who has been listening from the stairs due to the house's acoustics, comes down and asks Julie to be brave. She finally tells him she loves him. The entire household has been eavesdropping, and they gather for a champagne toast.

On Christmas morning, Nick hands Julie a small box from the tree containing a pair of tiny yellow bootees. Blair and Nick announce she is pregnant. As snow falls outside, the extended family settles into new beginnings: Julie with Heath, Nick and Blair expecting their baby, Dana engaged to Axel, Gwen reconciling with Blair, and the entire improbable group finding togetherness at last.
