Three women who meet by chance become business partners and close friends while each confronts a personal crisis that forces her to reconsider what she wants from love, family, and herself.

Bree Larton, Mikki Bartholomew, and Ashley Burton each discover the same beachfront retail space in Los Angeles on the same day. The location is too large for any one of them, so Bree suggests they lease it together. Six months later, their shared storefront houses Bree's bookshop (The Boardwalk Bookshop), Mikki's gift shop, and Ashley's bakery (Muffins to the Max). Every Friday at sunset, the three women carry champagne onto the sand and toast their partnership, a ritual that anchors their deepening friendship.

Bree is confident, athletic, and fiercely independent. She refuses to stock literary fiction, even though her parents, Naomi and Gearard Days, are celebrated literary writers who were emotionally neglectful throughout her childhood. She married Lewis Larton, an older bookstore owner, believing she had finally found love. Lewis divorced her, then returned two years later begging for a second chance. Bree took him back, only to learn after his lung cancer diagnosis that he had known the disease was terminal before reconciling and had used her as a caretaker. She stayed until he died, inherited the store, and remade it as her own. Since Lewis, Bree has refused to let anyone close, keeping her romantic encounters brief and transactional.

Mikki, a warm blonde approaching forty, has been divorced from Perry for three years. They share custody of their two children: Sydney, an eighteen-year-old Stanford student, and Will, a sixteen-year-old car enthusiast. Despite the amicable divorce and close co-parenting with Perry's extended family, Mikki feels stuck. She wants a partner but has barely dated since the split.

Ashley, a tall redhead in her late twenties, lives happily with her boyfriend, Seth, and expects him to propose soon. Her brother, Harding Burton, is a bestselling memoirist who was hit by a car and left for dead as a teenager. He recovered, learned to walk again, and co-founded OAR (Objective, Achievement, Repeat), a nonprofit for at-risk youth. Ashley warns Bree not to break Harding's heart when he returns to LA for a book signing, but Bree insists she has no interest.

Harding's signing draws nearly six hundred fans. His talk about recovery and his partnership with Dave, OAR's co-president who uses a wheelchair after a diving accident, moves even the skeptical Bree. Afterward, Harding asks Bree to dinner. Their evening is playful and probing; Bree feels a connection she has not experienced since Lewis but tells Harding firmly that they will not sleep together.

With Bree's help, Mikki creates an online dating profile and connects with Duane Merrell, a UCLA economics professor. Their first date goes spectacularly well and lasts four hours. The relationship progresses through a wine-tasting weekend in Monterey, and they eventually become intimate, an experience that is transformative for Mikki after years of loneliness.

Meanwhile, Seth blindsides Ashley. Instead of proposing, he presents a plan to buy a house together and reveals he never wants to get married, believing marriage causes people to stop trying. Ashley is devastated. At Bree's suggestion, she and Seth each try to imagine the other's position and exchange articles supporting their respective views, but neither changes.

Harding joins Bree's Thursday surfing class, struggles physically due to lingering effects of his accident, and kisses her in the parking lot. Over the following weeks their intimacy grows. At an OAR fundraiser he introduces her as his girlfriend, a label she resists but does not reject. After dinner with Harding's parents, Bree begins to imagine a future with him, then recoils from the possibility.

Perry complicates Mikki's new happiness by declaring he is still in love with her and wants to reconcile. He bought his new house with her in mind and suggests they have a third child. Mikki does not immediately shut him down, questioning whether she still has feelings for him while deepening her relationship with Duane. She does not tell Duane about Perry's overtures.

Bree's mother, Naomi, arranges a book signing at the shop. The event draws only about thirty attendees, and Naomi is characteristically detached, dismissing Bree's success. Bree's friends rally around her protectively, and Rita, Mikki's mother who works at the bookshop, defiantly refuses to have her book signed. Bree realizes she feels nothing toward Naomi but a familiar emptiness and acknowledges she no longer needs anything from her parents.

After Harding tells Bree he is falling in love with her, she panics and flees. In a self-destructive spiral, she goes to the apartment of a man she once briefly dated, intending to sleep with him to sabotage her feelings for Harding. She cannot go through with it. She drives to Harding's house and confesses. Rather than being angry, he is relieved: Her inability to be with someone else proves she cares. Weeks later, they make love for the first time. While Harding sleeps, Bree reads pages of his grief manuscript and erupts, telling him he does not matter to her and never will. Harding responds calmly, telling her she is lying, that what they shared was love, and that she needs to come back when she is ready. Bree runs.

Chet, Perry's father, collapses with a heart attack, drawing the extended family together at the hospital. The crisis stirs complicated feelings in Mikki about her bonds with Perry's family. Seth brings Ashley a Tiffany wedding band, not as a proposal but as a substitute: a ring without marriage. Ashley realizes he will never truly want to marry her. She leaves the apartment and moves into Bree's house, where Bree replaces the futon with a real bed and tells Ashley she can stay as long as she likes.

When Duane returns from a work trip, Mikki accidentally reveals Perry's reconciliation campaign. Duane feels betrayed and breaks up with her. Ashley bluntly tells Mikki she has been stringing both men along. Mikki admits the truth and resolves to act. She meets Perry and tells him definitively that their marriage is over, then calls Duane, delivers an honest apology, and tells him she loves him. Duane forgives her, and they reconcile and commit exclusively to each other.

Ashley and Mikki trick Bree into visiting OAR, where she meets Kimberley, a therapist. Bree is furious but stays. Kimberley explains that Bree's emotional patterns stem from childhood neglect and that therapy can help her stop avoiding relationships out of fear. Bree agrees to weekly sessions and begins journaling about grief, healing, and her feelings for Harding.

Seth returns one final time and proposes with a diamond ring, saying he will marry Ashley if that is what it takes. Ashley refuses, telling him that if she accepts, she will always be the woman who forced him into marriage. Dave then asks Ashley on a date, revealing he has been interested in her for years and being forthright about the realities of his disability. Ashley says yes, and after a deliberate friendship period, they become a couple.

Late one night, Bree writes five pages about grief that reflect genuine self-awareness. She drives to Harding's house and leaves the envelope on his doormat, wanting desperately to knock but knowing she is not yet ready.

On Christmas Day, Bree attends a large gathering at Mikki's house, surrounded by friends and extended family. Mikki tells Bree that Harding is still single and still in love with her. That evening, Bree texts Harding asking to talk. He drives to her house. She tells him she has trust issues, may never be "normal," and will never reconcile with her parents, but she loves him. Harding pulls her close and tells her he has been waiting. Bree invites him inside her house for the first time, letting someone into the private space she has guarded for years. They agree to build a life together, with love as the only rule.
