Highly intelligent and a voracious reader, she desires independence from her heavily supported daily routine and applies to Camp Green Glades to prove she can handle life away from home.

Trinity is a lively camp counselor at Camp Green Glades assigned to provide one-on-one assistance to Melody. She wears a leg brace due to a past car accident and previously attended the camp herself when she was a preteen. Patient and deeply empathetic, she encourages her campers to express themselves freely and supports them through physical activities.

Noah is a fellow camper at Green Glades who catches Melody's attention with his white hair and gorgeous smile. Born prematurely during a hurricane, he has a neurological condition and uses both a walker and a wheelchair to move around. He connects with Melody over shared interests, including their mutual love for music and their shared experience of synesthesia.

Diane is Melody's mother, a hardworking nurse who dedicates her time off to caring for her family. While she worries about the potential dangers of camp activities like swimming and horseback riding, she listens to Melody's desire for independence and helps her apply for the specialized summer camp.

Mrs. V is a close neighbor who has helped care for Melody for years. She provides practical support, takes the girls to the library on Fridays, and offers emotional encouragement as Melody prepares for her first major trip away from home.

Penny is Melody's active younger sister. She enjoys playing outside and shares a close, comfortable home life with her family in southern Ohio.

Karyn is a camper from Michigan who shares a cabin with Melody. She has spina bifida, uses a wheelchair, and bonds with her cabinmates over their shared frustrations with how schools and strangers treat kids with disabilities.

Athena is one of Melody's cabinmates at Green Glades. She has Down syndrome, possesses a bubbly personality, and has a strong enthusiasm for colors and art.

Jocelyn is the fourth resident in Melody's cabin at summer camp. She tends to keep to herself initially but joins the other girls in team events like the Balloon Ball competition.
