Chapter 26 Summary

Inspired by the painting Levi showed her, Dani goes to the fabric store to buy materials for her final project and a wedding-guest dress. She texts with Levi about family-dinner night, hoping that things won’t be awkward after what happened the previous night. He wants to pick her up, but she insists on taking a cab. Levi sends her money to pay the cab fare.

At the family dinner, Bella answers the door. Trish warmly greets Dani, and Dani offers to help with dessert. When she goes to the kitchen, Claire and Rhea are making strawberry shortcake, Dani’s favorite dessert, but she knows Levi hates it.

Chapter 27 Summary

Rhea declares that she loves a boy named Tyler. Claire thinks that Tyler is “gross.” The sisters ask Dani how she knew that she was “in love” with Levi. Dani thinks about how she’s loved Levi since high school and has never stopped. The sisters say that Levi is constantly talking about Dani and playfully splash her with water. She goes to the restroom to dry herself and overhears Bella and Levi talking. Bella tells Levi that he has all but secured the job and flirtatiously touches his arm. Levi reminds Bella that he and Dani are together.

Levi asks Dani if they can talk about what happened at the ball. Despite what she overheard, Dani can’t fully believe that Levi truly loves her. She fumbles her words and says that she knows the kiss was just “pretending.” Levi appears confused and somewhat wounded but changes the subject.

Over dinner, Sarah asks Dani to stay at the beach with the family for the entire wedding weekend. Levi offers to drive her back and forth from the city, but Dani agrees. Sarah asks Dani and Levi to attend her last wedding-dress fitting.

Chapter 28 Summary

Dani grabs breakfast to deliver to her design-class friends. They’re all working on their final projects. Sandra wants to talk about the ball, having seen Levi and Dani there. She describes how handsome Levi is and how he looked at Dani “[l]ike she was the only one in the room” (211). Dani is trying to balance finishing her collection, deciding whether to go to Paris, and wondering what will happen between her and Levi when their fake relationship ends.

Chapter 29 Summary

Dani goes to meet Levi in his classroom and catches the last bit of his teaching. The female students flirt with him, especially when they ask him to speak in French. Dani accidentally drops her bag, drawing attention to herself, and Levi ends the class to help her collect her things. Dani jokes with him about his students having a crush on him. He doesn’t understand until Dani explains that she, too, thinks a man who speaks French is sexy.

Dani meets Oliver, one of Levi’s roommates. Oliver asks if Dani has read Levi’s book, but she says he won’t let her. Oliver says that when she does read it, she’ll “learn quite a few things” (215). Someone returns to class for a forgotten item, so she and Levi duck into a closet. Being this close to him reminds her of their dance at the ball, and she wonders what it would be like to kiss again. Rhea and Claire have invited Dani to a movie night, and Levi plans to join them because he loves spending time with his family.

Chapter 30 Summary

Levi and Dani go to Sarah’s final wedding-dress fitting. Sarah asks for Dani’s opinion on the fit of the dress, but Dani doesn’t feel confident offering it because she doesn’t feel like she’s a “professional.” Levi takes her home and gives her a copy of his book to read. Alone at home, the unread book taunts her, but she holds off reading it because she knows it’s about Bella.

Chapter 31 Summary

Dani attends her final fashion-critique club meeting. One of her friends notices Levi’s poetry book in her bag and offers to translate it for her. Gabe and Jia can’t believe she hasn’t read it yet, and Jia thinks that at least one of the poems could be about Dani. She encourages Dani to read the book, if only to get closure on the matter.

At home, Dani gathers ingredients to bake blondies. The noise wakes up her mother, who’s sleeping off jet lag from a trip to London. Dani shares that she hasn’t finished her collection, as she fears it’s too “simple” and not “avant-garde.” Dani’s mother worries that Dani lost her creative spark after her father died. Since her reunion with Levi, her spark is returning. Dani’s mother reminds her of how she dreamed of going to Paris when she was younger and tells her not to close the door on ESMOD.

Chapter 32 Summary

Dani and Jia are at their favorite restaurant, spying on Gabe on a date. Rhea calls Dani from Levi’s phone and explains that Bella can’t attend the pre-wedding dance rehearsal and that Levi needs a partner. Levi gets on the phone and apologizes, but Dani agrees to stand in as his dance partner. Jia points out that Dani isn’t dressed properly for dance lessons. She grabs Dani’s phone and tells Levi to stop by Dani’s house on his way to pick her up at the restaurant and pick out an outfit for her.

Chapter 33 Summary

Levi arrives with Dani’s clothes and a bouquet of daisies. She goes to the restroom to change and admires how her body looks in the skirt she designed. Jia helps her fix her hair and forces Dani to acknowledge that she’s a talented designer and should wear her creations more often.

At the dance rehearsals, Dani and Levi dance just as closely as they did at the ball, but Dani is distracted by thinking about how much she’ll miss this when their fake-dating arrangement ends. Levi notices and asks her what’s wrong. She explains that she’s not heard from Lazaro since submitting her application. Levi reassures her that she’s “incredible” and asks her to repeat the affirmation. It’s a perfect day until they get into the car for Levi to take her home and she sees Bella’s name pop up on his phone.

Chapters 26-33 Analysis

Dani and Levi’s arrangement settles into a familial-like connection and complacency in these chapters, but Dani still believes that there’s a gap between what she feels and what she can trust. The theme of Overcoming Fear to Embrace Love is most evident in the way that Dani and Levi struggle to say what needs to be said to each other. Even after passionately kissing him, Dani can’t bring herself to believe that Levi’s feelings are genuine and be honest with him about how she feels. When he tries to revisit what happened at the ball, she quickly dismisses it as part of the act, which leaves him confused and hurt. Dani’s inability to accept his sincere attempt at communication illustrates how she’s still letting fear limit their relationship.

Their relationship is also complicated by her connection to his family. They treat her as if she belongs; his little sisters adore Dani, and Levi supports her in small yet meaningful ways. Levi’s promise, “I’ll buy you flowers every day for the rest of my life if it makes you happy” (240), highlights both love and attention. Receiving flowers makes Dani feel seen and cared for, and Levi offers steady, intentional love that consistently shows up. For Dani, flowers also link back to her identity and creativity, especially through her work and the imagery associated with her. This makes the gesture more personal, as it reflects not just romantic affection but an understanding of who she is, illustrating Levi’s romantic intentions, which Dani still fails to clearly recognize.

This uncertainty is closely tied to Dani’s struggle with Listening to One’s Instincts as a Path to Self-Discovery. Throughout these chapters, she continues to doubt herself in both her personal relationships and her work. She hesitates to offer feedback on Sarah’s dress fitting and worries that her own designs aren’t good enough, revealing a lack of confidence in her abilities. Jia says, “You design beautiful clothes, Dani. It’s time you start wearing them” (241). Even though others consistently affirm her talent, Dani struggles to believe in herself. However, her decision to begin designing her final project, inspired by the painting Levi showed her, suggests that she’s starting to reconnect with her creativity on her own terms and allowing herself to grow as a person. Similarly, Jia’s encouragement pushes Dani toward a more independent sense of identity, even if she’s not fully there yet. Dani is beginning to move forward in some areas of her life, particularly in her creative work, but remains emotionally stuck with Levi.

Dani remains caught between idealism and reality in her interpretation of her relationship with Levi, continuing to develop the theme of Growing Up by Letting Go of Expectations. Dani describes Levi as having an “[a]lmost euphoric curiosity that manifest[s] in scientists and attractive, mysterious male leads from nineties romances” (216), which shows how much she still idealizes him. She sees him as a caricature of a romance-movie trope. This makes it harder for her to separate who Levi is from who she wants him to be. Dani continues to filter her feelings for him through a romantic lens rather than fully confronting what’s in front of her, creating both internal and external tension and highlighting how far she still has to go to see Levi and their relationship for what they are.

This tendency to maintain a limited perspective continues despite others’ efforts to shift her understanding. She continues to assume that their connection is temporary and performative, even as Levi’s words and actions suggest otherwise. When Sandra offers an outside perspective that challenges Dani’s assumptions, Dani still clings to the belief that none of it can be real, her fear still overcoming her desire for love. Levi’s poetry book is a physical manifestation of this tension. Dani avoids reading it because she’s convinced that it’s about Bella, choosing to preserve her assumptions rather than risk confronting the truth. In doing so, she actively maintains a version of reality that aligns with her fears instead of questioning it. Even when their relationship seems to exist outside the constraints of the fake-dating arrangement, seeing Bella’s name on Levi’s phone immediately disrupts her sense of safety. Dani’s sense of reality remains too fragile; no matter how real things feel, she’s quick to interpret any sign as justification for her fears.
