Following a tragic encounter on Bannock Hill, she finds the inner courage to investigate the mysteries surrounding their oppressive ruler and secure a safe future for her clan.

Mr. Ocax is a great horned owl who dominates the Dimwood Forest. He operates as a tyrannical dictator, deliberately instilling fear in the local mice to maintain them as a compliant food source. He insists that he acts as their protector from worse threats, using manipulation and strict territorial rules to keep the mouse population under his absolute authority.

Ragweed is a freethinking city mouse with a distinct, relaxed way of speaking. He openly questions the established social order of Dimwood Forest and refuses to blindly accept the owl's claims of protection. His rebellious spirit and early tragic fate serve as the primary catalyst for Poppy's quest.

Lungwort is Poppy's father and the leader of the mouse clan residing at Gray House. He strictly enforces absolute obedience to Mr. Ocax, believing the owl's claims of benevolence without hesitation. His dedication to following the rules blinds him to the owl's true predatory nature and creates tension with his more inquisitive daughter.

Erethizon Dorsatum is a gruff, prickly porcupine living in Dimwood Forest. Despite his crotchety demeanor, he possesses a kind heart and adheres to a strict vegetarian diet. He speaks with a distinct dialect, harbors an intense craving for salt, and holds vital information about the true nature of the forest's predators.

Sweet Cicely is Poppy's mother. She is nervous by nature and generally passive regarding the governance of their mouse community. She relies on her husband to lead the family and avoids any conflict with the established rules of the forest.
