The narrative jumps forward: Sadie is 20 years old and has lived alone with Dick for the past two years while Lucinda is away at mandatory boarding school. As Dick beats her again, Sadie decides she cannot wait for Lucinda to come home; she must kill him. She activates a dissociative state she calls “the numb,” an emotional switch that makes her a cold and focused fighter. She overpowers Dick and begins to choke him.

Their struggle is interrupted by an armed, cloaked man from the oligarchy government. He announces new orders requiring all servants to be tested for ABO status (previously, everyone but servants were tested when they turned 20). He takes Sadie to the sacred lake, enchanted by the fae to tell whether someone is an alpha, beta, omega, or null. 

He slits her arm and holds it over the water; wind scatters most of the blood onto the snowy banks, but one drop reaches the surface. The entire lake turns black, the color signifying an alpha (although usually the lake only turns half-black). As the man carries her away through the trees, Sadie glimpses the lake and sees that it has turned from black to blood-red. Then she loses consciousness.

Sadie awakens outside a heavily armed fortress and is confronted by three massive and handsome men. She discovers that they are alphas: Ascher, who has horns and tattoos; Cobra, whose skin has emeralds and diamonds embedded in his cheekbones, neck, and arms; and Jax, their apparent leader, who is the largest of the three. The men all give off distinctive alpha scents: Ascher is pine, Jax is warm chestnuts, and Cobra is frost. Sadie learns that she is at a secret military compound near a portal to the fae realm, where shifters battle invading monsters.

The alphas believe she may be a spy, and just as they are advancing on her, a null shifter named Zed arrives with a message from the oligarchy confirming that Sadie is the realm’s newest alpha. The alphas are stunned and disbelieving, stating that there has never been a female alpha. Suspecting she is a fae spy, they decide to test her abilities and lead her into the fortress gymnasium.

Inside the gym, a beta soldier with a bushy beard loudly insults Sadie. Jax silences him by announcing to the assembled betas that Sadie is a new alpha. He then initiates a training exercise that consists of hours of continuous one-on-one sparring. To endure the combat, Sadie activates “the numb.”

Despite her small size, she withstands brutal and prolonged fighting without flinching or collapsing, ultimately tying with her final partner and defeating roughly 100 opponents across the session. Her unnatural toughness shocks the other soldiers and the three alphas. After the session, a battered and bloodied Sadie is told by Jax to use special healing salts in a private bathroom. Zed shows her to her own separate wing, where she has a room apart from the alpha quarters.

Sadie awakens in the bath after the “numb” has worn off and is immediately overwhelmed by repressed physical and emotional pain. At lunch in the alpha dining hall, she eats ravenously, which disgusts the other alphas. Ascher insults her, prompting Sadie to angrily confront all three of them, demanding they stop interrogating her and treating her with contempt.

Later, during a strategy class, the bearded beta stares at her with undisguised hatred. Sadie also overhears a group of beta women gossiping about their attraction to the alphas and their disdain for her. Feeling unsafe and threatened, Sadie steals a butcher knife from the dining hall and sleeps on the floor, barricading her bedroom door.

That night, the bearded beta, Darren, breaks into Sadie’s room and attacks her. He reveals that he is a friend of Dick’s and intends to rape her to prove that a woman is too weak to be an alpha. As he pins her down, Sadie uses her stolen knife to slice his face and sever his tongue. Darren scrambles off her; Cobra, who heard the commotion and is in the hallway, drags him out. The alphas and Zed rush in to find Sadie twitching on the floor in a dissociative state.

In the hallway, Cobra holds the captured and horribly mutilated Darren. Zed states aloud that Darren intended to rape Sadie; Cobra asks Jax directly, who confirms it, and Cobra snaps Darren’s neck. Deciding Sadie is not safe on her own, Jax moves her into the shared alpha living quarters with him, Ascher, and Cobra.

The narrative shifts to Cobra’s perspective, an hour before the attack. He reflects on his suspicion of Sadie, believing her unnatural toughness proves she is a trained killer. He notes that Ascher has only been an alpha for about a year, while Cobra himself spent most of his 100 years in the fae realm before escaping six years ago. He reveals that Jax is his lover and that their relationship has helped him control his inner demons, which stem from a traumatic past that left him with a deep hatred of women.

When the alphas hear the attack, they rush to Sadie’s room.

Sadie wakes up in the alphas’ shared room, feeling safe for the first time she can remember. The morning is tense as Jax explains she must train until she can shift her form, and Ascher continues to mock her. When Sadie needs to change clothes, her fear of exposing her scarred body triggers a panic attack, and she flees to an empty neighboring room to dress in private. 

During their training session, a “fae breach” alarm sounds, and everyone rushes to a battle room to arm themselves. Finding her own locker empty, a terrified Sadie is given a gun by Ascher, who instructs her to stay behind the others. As they head out to fight, Sadie witnesses the alphas transform: Jax becomes a giant, spined bear; Ascher a massive, demonic ram-like creature; and Cobra’s eyes become slit snake pupils while shadowy snakes writhe across his otherwise unchanged skin. The sight of their monstrous forms leaves Sadie horrified about the impending battle.
