Plot Summary

The second installment of the Covenant series follows Alexandria "Alex" Andros, a half-blood training at the Covenant, a school and compound in North Carolina. Alex is preparing to become a Sentinel, an elite warrior who hunts daimons, creatures that drain pure-bloods of their life essence, aether. She is also fated to become the second Apollyon, a rare and powerful being whose abilities will fully activate, or Awaken, on her eighteenth birthday. The First Apollyon, Seth, shares a deepening psychic connection with her that complicates every aspect of her life.

Alex struggles in combat class under the hostile Instructor Romvi, who singles her out, publicly displaying the scars on her arms left by daimon attacks as a warning to other students. Her distraction partly stems from her feelings for Aiden St. Delphi, a pure-blood Sentinel with whom she shares a forbidden attraction. Relationships between pures and halfs violate the Breed Order, a law that would condemn Alex to servitude, a fate in which half-bloods are drugged and forced into lifelong domestic labor.

When a young pure-blood student is found nearly drained of aether inside the Covenant, panic spreads. The attacker is believed to be a half-blood turned daimon, a phenomenon previously thought impossible. Alex's stepfather Lucian, the Minister of Council, and her uncle Marcus Andros, the Covenant's dean, impose severe restrictions on half-bloods: a curfew, mandatory physical exams, travel bans, and increased patrols. Alex argues with Aiden over the unfairness of these rules. He responds that if he were like other pure-bloods, he would have pursued her without considering the consequences. Seth begins visiting Alex's room at night, explaining that their Apollyon connection causes him to feel her nightmares. Alex discovers she sleeps soundly only when Seth is nearby and inadvertently picks up on his emotions through their bond. Seth also reveals that daimon half-blood attacks have been escalating across every Covenant, information the Ministers are suppressing.

Aiden surprises Alex with a secret trip to the Asheboro Zoo, a place where her mother once spoke about Alex's mortal father, Alexander. They hold hands, share honest conversation, and kiss. Alex tells Aiden she loves him. He pulls away, insisting that pure-bloods do not love halfs and that loving her would take everything from her. Back at the Covenant, Alex encounters the oracle Grandma Piperi, who warns of a deceptive man who "has them all fooled" and speaks of choosing between fate and the unknown before crumbling to dust and dying. Seth senses Alex's emotions from the zoo trip and deduces she is involved with a pure-blood. He agrees not to expose them but warns that Aiden will always side with the pures. Shortly after, Aiden ends their private training sessions and tells Alex he cannot love her. She retreats to her room, where Seth comforts her, and she begins to see him as less cold than she had believed.

Alex and her best friend Caleb Nicolo sneak out after curfew for a movie night with their friend Olivia. Behind the dining hall, Sandra, a Sentinel who was secretly turned daimon, ambushes them with three daimon pures. The daimon half drives a Covenant dagger into Caleb's chest as Caleb pushes another student out of the blade's path. Caleb dies in Alex's arms. Alex spends nearly five days in bed, consumed by guilt. Seth stays by her side, absorbing her grief through their connection. He eventually forces her to attend Caleb's funeral, where Olivia screams that Alex should have been able to save Caleb. While wandering the memorial grounds, Alex notices a statue of Thanatos, the God of Peaceful Death, bearing the same downward-torch symbol she saw tattooed on Romvi's arm.

Alex travels to the New York Covenant in the Catskills for her Council testimony, accompanied by Aiden and Leon, a fellow Sentinel. At the estate controlled by Head Minister Gavril Telly, Alex observes that half-blood servants are heavily medicated and subservient. Seth takes Alex to secretly observe a Council hearing in which a half-blood woman is tried for violating the Breed Order by loving a pure-blood named Hector. When Hector uses elemental power to defend her, Telly orders a Guard to kill him. Seth admits he brought Alex to witness this so she would understand what would happen to Aiden if their relationship continued.

Multiple threats converge on Alex during her stay. An unknown pure compels her to walk barefoot through the estate's freezing labyrinth; Leon finds her nearly dead from hypothermia. During training, a glowing Apollyon rune appears permanently on Alex's palm after she touches Seth's Apollyon marks, suggesting she is beginning to Awaken early. Alex also discovers references to the Order of Thanatos, an extremist group, and connects the Thanatos tattoos shared by Romvi and Telly. She overhears Telly offering Marcus a Council seat in exchange for an unspecified plan, which Marcus refuses.

Alex's Council testimony devolves into a trial. Telly implies she willingly submitted to daimon attacks, and Alex defiantly displays her scars to the entire Council. Telly calls for a vote to place her into servitude; the vote splits evenly until Head Minister Diana Elders votes no. Telly warns that his true goal was to neutralize the second Apollyon.

At the annual Fall Ball, Aiden crosses the ballroom toward Alex, but Seth intercepts, telling her they do not belong among the pures. She leaves with Seth. By the pool, they kiss, and Seth asks her to choose him with no labels or expectations. Alex agrees. Later, Alex is given Aphrodesian Brew, a powerful aphrodisiac drug, through Laadan, a pure-blood friend of Alex's late mother who was compelled to deliver it. The scheme is designed to catch Alex in a compromising position with a pure so she can be sent into servitude. Seth takes Alex to safety, but under the Brew's influence she pursues him physically before passing out. Aiden discovers the scene and attacks Seth; Leon breaks up the fight. Alex reaffirms her choice to be with Seth, though her heart remains with Aiden.

As Alex prepares to leave, dozens of daimons storm the Covenant. Three furies break free from their marble casings and begin slaughtering everyone indiscriminately. Alex channels a mysterious surge of amber-tinted power to decapitate all three. The last furie warns that Alex is "a threat" and that unnamed Powers have chosen her path, echoing the oracle's prophecy. After the battle, the Guard who killed Hector approaches Alex, declares "there can't be two of you," and swings his blade at her. Alex kills him in self-defense.

Aiden orders Seth to fly Alex out immediately and tells her never to speak of the Guard's death. He plans to use compulsion on the two pure-blood witnesses to erase their memories, a crime that would mean his death if discovered. On the plane, Seth acknowledges that Aiden is not like other pures. Alex recognizes that Aiden's willingness to risk everything proves his feelings run far deeper than he has admitted. She lets Seth's warmth fill enough of the emptiness to keep her going, even as her heart remains with Aiden and the dangerous secret they now share.
