Storm and Fury (the Harbinger, #1)

The first installment in the Harbinger trilogy, set in a world where Wardens, gargoyle-like shapeshifters who protect humanity from demons, live among humans. While humans know Wardens exist, they remain unaware that demons are real, a secret maintained by a cosmic rule requiring humankind to maintain blind faith without proof of Heaven or Hell.

Eighteen-year-old Trinity Marrow lives in a Warden community in the Potomac Highlands of West Virginia, overseen by Thierry, a Duke who has raised her since childhood. Most of the community believes Trinity is an ordinary human orphan, but she is a Trueborn, a nephilim (half-human, half-angel) and the last of her kind. Her father is the archangel Michael, and her human mother was killed by a trusted Warden named Ryker. Only a handful of people know what Trinity is: her Protector, Misha, a young Warden mystically bonded to guard her; Thierry and his husband, Matthew; and Trinity's friend Jada. Trinity possesses a powerful angelic energy called grace that can manifest as a flaming sword, though using it weakens her and she has been trained to suppress it until summoned by her father. She can also see ghosts and spirits and has retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease that is progressively limiting her vision.

The story opens with Trinity kissing Clay Armstrong, a young Warden in training who ignores her request to stop. She kicks him through a window, and Misha warns Clay to stay away. On the walk home, Misha expresses concern that Trinity's growing strength will expose her secret. Days later, Trinity senses demons outside the community walls and fights a horde of Raver demons, scavenger creatures whose presence typically signals a nearby Upper Level demon. Thierry warns her that if an Upper Level demon knew she existed, nothing would stop it from breaching their walls.

Three Wardens from Washington, DC, arrive requesting reinforcements: Nicolai, their new clan leader; Dez; and Zayne. They report that something is killing both Wardens and demons in DC. Trinity sneaks into the Great Hall to eavesdrop and is immediately struck by Zayne. He spots her and follows her outside, where their first exchange is combative and sarcastic. Misha warns Trinity that Zayne is dangerous, claiming Zayne lost a part of his soul through his connection to a girl who is half-Warden, half-demon. Thierry, however, describes Zayne as very honorable.

Trinity and Zayne's connection deepens through sparring and conversation. She learns his father, Abbot, was the previous DC clan leader who died fighting a creature called a Lilin. During one sparring match, Trinity impulsively kisses Zayne, and he briefly responds before pulling away. One evening, Trinity is attacked by a Warden wearing a porcelain doll mask who claws her arm, triggering her grace involuntarily. She kills the attacker. Zayne finds her bleeding and helps get her to safety. As she fades under sedation, Zayne tells her he feels they have met before, a sensation Trinity shares. The missing Clay is identified as the likely attacker.

A coordinated assault strikes the community during the Accolade, a ceremony honoring new Warden warriors. Humans wearing doll masks breach the walls alongside demons, and an explosion damages the Great Hall. Bael, an Upper Level demon and King of Hell, crashes into Thierry's house. When Trinity prepares to use her grace, Bael seizes Misha and flies off. Through the Protector bond, Trinity knows Misha is alive.

Desperate to rescue Misha, Trinity reveals her Trueborn nature by summoning her heavenly fire sword. She proposes a deal: The DC Wardens help her find Misha, and she will help them address whatever is killing Wardens and demons. Zayne agrees first, followed by Nicolai. Trinity leaves the community for the first time since childhood, accompanied by Peanut, a ghost who died at a Whitesnake concert in the 1980s and has been her companion for about eight years.

In DC, Trinity stays at Zayne's apartment, where he has been living alone and apart from his clan for months. He introduces her to Roth (Astaroth), the Crown Prince of Hell; Layla, the half-Warden, half-demon daughter of Lilith whom Zayne grew up with; and Cayman, a demon deal broker. Roth and Layla are clearly in love, forcing Trinity to reconsider her belief that demons are incapable of love. Roth dispatches Cayman to gather intelligence on Bael but warns that Bael is using Misha as bait.

Trinity and Zayne begin nightly patrols. Two Hellions—powerful demons from the depths of Hell, forbidden from roaming the earth—ambush them in a subway station; one confirms Bael is torturing Misha before killing itself rather than reveal Bael's location. Zayne begins coming to Trinity's room at night to talk until she falls asleep, and she confides the full story of her mother's death and her worsening vision. Their emotional and physical connection intensifies until one night Zayne kisses her fully, and they share an intimate encounter, though they do not have sex.

Roth privately reveals that Zayne has been in love with Layla since childhood. Devastated, Trinity confronts Zayne, who admits he will always care about Layla but insists his feelings for Trinity are real and unlike anything he has experienced. Meanwhile, Roth takes Trinity to a coven of witches, where she learns that Senator Josh Fisher sought an enchantment to control humans, offering the witches parts of a nephilim as payment. The senator expected to have Trinity by the summer solstice, which is days away. A witch warns that something dangerous is in the city and the coven is fleeing.

Trinity, Zayne, Roth, and Layla investigate the senator's empty house near Bethesda, finding architectural plans for a school linked to a company called Cimmerian Industries. A massive demon army arrives, led by Aym, a Grand Duke of Hell serving as Bael's lieutenant. Trinity cuts her own palm, using the scent of her angelic blood to draw demons away from the injured Layla and Roth, then unleashes her grace and destroys dozens of demons. Zayne kills Aym but sustains catastrophic burns and collapses.

Misha then appears, revealing he was never Bael's captive. He orchestrated everything, guided by an entity called the Harbinger. He confesses that he manipulated Ryker into discovering Trinity's grace years ago, setting off the events that killed her mother. Accusing Trinity of selfishness, Misha attacks her and moves to kill the helpless Zayne. Despite exhaustion, Trinity summons her grace one final time, tells Misha she loves him, and brings the flaming sword down. He disintegrates, and the Protector bond shatters inside her chest.

The archangel Michael arrives moments later and reveals that Trinity was never supposed to be bonded to Misha. Protectors are predestined at birth, and her mother was supposed to bring Trinity to Zayne's father in DC but went to Thierry instead. Michael knew of the error but chose to let events unfold. He asks Zayne if he accepts the bond, and Zayne agrees without hesitation. Grace flows between them, healing Zayne completely and forging a connection far more intense than what Trinity experienced with Misha: two heartbeats as one. Michael warns that the Harbinger has arrived and they must stop it or all mankind is lost, then vanishes.

Trinity finally breaks down, grieving for Misha and her mother. Matthew arrives and suggests the mistaken bonding may have twisted Misha, making him susceptible to the Harbinger's influence. Trinity recognizes that her romantic relationship with Zayne is now forbidden by the rules governing Protectors and Trueborns. She resolves to focus on her mission: Find and stop the Harbinger. That night, Zayne carries her into the sky for the first time. The story continues in Rage and Ruin.
