Release Me is the second book in the Shatter Me: Series Two, a continuation of Tahereh Mafi's dystopian Shatter Me series. The story takes place in a world where a fascist regime called The Reestablishment once seized global power but was overthrown by revolutionaries a decade ago. The new government, The New Republic, is led by Juliette (Ella) Ferrars as head of state, while her husband, Aaron Warner Anderson, serves as general of defense. Many people in this world possess preternatural abilities such as lethal touch, invisibility, or emotional sensing. The Reestablishment's last stronghold is Ark Island, a fortress controlled by a synthetic intelligence called Klaus, where a neural network called the Nexus turns every living being into an active surveillance device.
The novel opens with Warner observing the failed interrogation of Rosabelle Wolff, a captured assassin from Ark Island. Rosabelle's estranged father, Hugo Wolff, has spent eight days trying to get her to speak, but she remains silent and emotionless. Warner, whose ability allows him to sense others' emotions, finds her state completely unreadable. He enlists his half-brother Adam Kent Anderson, who can neutralize others' powers, to test whether Rosabelle is generating a shield, but Adam fails. Warner is also consumed by anxiety about Juliette, whose pregnancy carries uncertain prospects for the child's survival. The session ends in failure, and the brothers argue heatedly about who is responsible for the reckless behavior of their youngest brother, James.
James collects ocean samples on a beach under the supervision of Kenji, a high-ranking soldier with invisibility powers. He resents his demotion after launching an unauthorized solo mission into Ark Island a month earlier. Escalating attacks on civilians had convinced James the rebels needed intelligence, so he went alone and returned with Rosabelle, only to be stripped of his authority. Kenji confronts James about his feelings for Rosabelle, but James denies being in love while admitting she occupies his thoughts constantly.
Warner arrives and reveals that Rosabelle has escaped the maximum-security prison without a trace. She took what she believed to be a dangerous vial recovered during her capture, but it was a decoy with a tracker. The tracker led to a party supply store, signaling that Rosabelle knew the vial was fake and used it to buy time. James refuses to share information with Warner but privately suspects Rosabelle is heading to the nearest airbase.
Rosabelle's perspective confirms James's suspicion. She crosses the city on foot, astonished by the absence of centralized surveillance compared to the Ark. Her true mission is to retrieve the authentic vial and use it to destroy Klaus, saving her sister Clara, who is imprisoned in an asylum on the island. Near a military airfield, James finds her wearing a children's cat costume she mistook for a ninja outfit.
James tries to persuade her to surrender, but she refuses. She stabs him twice with his own knife and runs to the airplane hangar, where she disarms the security system and begins preparing a jet. Warner arrives with soldiers. In the hangar's shadows, Rosabelle reveals critical intelligence: The rebels' prisons were all built by The Reestablishment, and she has trained to escape every one. She warns that The New Republic has been deeply infiltrated and that they have less than seven weeks before catastrophe. Soldiers storm the hangar, and Rosabelle engages them with a stolen rifle, consciously fighting her trained instinct to kill. When she is surrounded, she shoots James in the shoulder to create an opening and sprints for the jet.
She begins takeoff despite severe injuries and aircraft damage. James climbs onto the wing, clinging with one arm. Rosabelle realizes that accelerating would kill him. Unable to destroy the person who represents her capacity for change, she hits the brakes. James boards the plane and calms her panic attack using his healing abilities.
Warner confronts them on the tarmac, shoots James in the leg, and studies the emotional dynamic between the two. James relays the seven-week warning. As Warner deliberates, Rosabelle activates her power to die at will and drops dead.
Three days pass with Rosabelle in a coma. James, consumed by anxiety, tries to cook soup for her with help from Nazeera Ibrahim, the daughter of the former supreme commander of Asia and a longtime family friend, who warns him that pursuing a trained executioner is dangerous. The group gathers for a meeting. Warner explains Rosabelle cannot return to supermax since she can escape every Reestablishment-built prison. Nazeera offers to house Rosabelle in her cottage within The Waffle, the heavily secured residential compound at the capital's heart. Then Warner receives an urgent page: Rosabelle has woken violently, her body in crisis.
During the coma, Rosabelle entered Clara's dreams, where Clara warned she only dreams of the dead, implying Rosabelle came dangerously close to actual death. Upon waking, Rosabelle is trapped inside her malfunctioning body. James's voice anchors her, stabilizing her airways and heart rate. The intensity of her feelings for him triggers a second crisis. Warner senses the emotional feedback between them, clears the room, and warns Rosabelle that if she is manipulating James, he will destroy her.
Rosabelle is transferred to Nazeera's cottage. James arrives with failed soup and pulls her into his arms; she falls asleep against his chest. When she wakes, she tells the group that undercover agents are planning synchronized terror attacks across the continent and that only her return to the Ark can stop them. James takes her to a diner so she can eat, but an emergency alert sounds and the diner empties as off-duty soldiers rush to respond.
In a parallel thread, Warner and Kenji come under fire at the docks from assailants wielding advanced laser weapons. Warner deduces that central communications have been hacked and reveals that the stolen vial is yet another decoy; he has planted several with trackers, and only he knows where the original is stored.
Alone in the evacuated diner, James and Rosabelle confront the tension between them. Their emotional intensity escalates into physical intimacy before Nazeera interrupts. Rosabelle attacks Nazeera, steals her weapons, and flees, only to discover that The Waffle is sealed by an electromagnetic force field. James catches up, and Rosabelle reveals the vial's full purpose: Agents across the continent will use it to set off undetectable explosions releasing a gene-editing virus that rewrites DNA, eliminating all preternatural abilities and preparing the population for remote influence by synthetic intelligence. She withheld this because she knew James would insist on helping and believes no one from the mainland could survive the Ark. They agree to work together. An explosion rocks the sky, which Rosabelle suspects is a diversion.
They drive to a warehouse where suspects were reportedly cornered. Rosabelle is ambushed inside. James fights through the darkened aisles, discovering a dead assailant who killed herself with a poison capsule and, separately, Allie, a soldier he has known for years, revealed as an embedded spy who also kills herself before James can intervene. He finds soldiers, including Kenji, hanging from the rafters in metal binds and shoots Kenji free. He then finds Rosabelle drenched in blood, clutching the recovered vial, staring in horror at the man James has pinned to the ground: Sebastian, her fiancé from the Ark, the man who tortured her. Sebastian declares he has come to take Rosabelle home. The novel ends on this cliffhanger.
