Plot Summary

This fantasy novel is set in a world where certain ships, called liveships, are built from a magical substance known as wizardwood. A liveship's figurehead absorbs the memories and experiences of its owning family across three generations of deaths aboard its decks, eventually "quickening" into sentient awareness. The story follows several interwoven plots centered on the Vestrit family of Bingtown, a coastal trading city founded by settlers known as the Old Traders, and the pirate captain Kennit, who dreams of ruling the Pirate Isles.

In a prologue set beneath the ocean, a sea serpent named Maulkin rouses his tangle, a group of serpents, and leads them northward. Maulkin carries fragmentary memories of an ancient time when serpents were greater beings and believes the time has come for their kind to undergo a mysterious rebirth.

The pirate captain Kennit visits the magical Others' Island to receive a prophecy. An oracle tells him he will achieve his heart's desire: Kennit secretly aspires to become King of the Pirate Isles, uniting scattered pirate settlements to control the Inside Passage, a vital shipping lane between the southern empire of Jamaillia and the northern nation of Chalced. On the island, a wizardwood charm he wears on his wrist suddenly comes to life and speaks, saving him from the Others' enchantment.

In Bingtown, the Vestrit family patriarch, Captain Ephron Vestrit, is dying. His wife Ronica manages the family's declining landholdings, burdened by debts on their liveship Vivacia and threatened by an influx of newcomers called New Traders, who settle on land the Satrap, Jamaillia's ruler, has granted them in violation of old agreements. Ephron's youngest daughter Althea has sailed with him since childhood and considers the Vivacia her birthright. His elder daughter Keffria is married to Kyle Haven, an ambitious captain who now commands the Vivacia. Kyle and Keffria's son Wintrow, a thirteen-year-old novice priest devoted to the god Sa, is summoned home from his monastery for his grandfather's death.

When the Vivacia returns to Bingtown, Ephron is carried aboard to die on her decks and complete her quickening. Ronica declares that Keffria, as eldest daughter, inherits the ship, giving control to Kyle. The Vivacia awakens as a living being, her figurehead opening green eyes and speaking her first words to Althea. Devastated by both her father's death and the loss of her ship, Althea walks off the vessel before his body is even committed to the sea. Brashen Trell, Ephron's former first mate whom Kyle has dismissed, follows Althea to ensure her safety.

Kyle forces Wintrow to serve aboard the Vivacia as ship's boy, claiming the liveship needs a blood-family member aboard. The boy endures brutal hazing from the second mate Torg but gradually improves as a sailor, forging a reluctant bond with the ship. When an accident crushes his index finger, Wintrow demonstrates courage by calmly directing his own amputation, and the Vivacia swallows his severed finger, deepening their connection.

During a family confrontation, Ronica reveals she persuaded the dying Ephron to name Keffria sole heir through a written document. Kyle swears by Sa that if any reputable captain vouches for Althea's seamanship, he will return the ship to her. Althea seizes on this oath. She visits Wintrow and secures his promise to testify to Kyle's words. With the help of Amber, a mysterious golden-skinned artisan, Althea disguises herself as a boy named Athel and ships out on the Reaper, a slaughter ship bound for the northern hunting grounds, to earn a ship's ticket proving her seamanship. Brashen, who has also signed on as third mate, recognizes her but keeps her secret.

Kennit builds his pirate empire. With his loyal first mate Sorcor, a former slave, he captures slaveships and frees their cargo, delivering freed people to pirate settlements and winning devotion across the islands. He brings his companion Etta, a fierce woman from a brothel in the pirate haven of Divvytown, aboard the Marietta, where she proves invaluable as a fighter, nurse, and confidante.

In Bingtown, Ronica meets with Caolwn Festrew, a Rain Wild Trader representative, to make payment on the Vivacia's construction debt. The Rain Wild Traders supplied the wizardwood from which the ship was built, and their ancient contract stipulates that if the Vestrits cannot pay in gold, they must forfeit a blood member to the Rain Wild families. Ronica falls short and negotiates a penalty extension, privately terrified that her granddaughter Malta could be claimed. Malta, Keffria's twelve-year-old daughter, chafes against her family's restrictions and opens a dream-box, a magical courting gift from a young Rain Wild man named Reyn Khuprus. Opening the box constitutes acceptance of his courtship. The Khuprus family, having acquired the Vivacia's debt, visits the Vestrit home, and after tense negotiation the families agree that Reyn may court Malta in chaperoned visits, though no engagement is promised.

On a beach near Bingtown, the liveship Paragon, whose figurehead face was hacked away long ago, lies abandoned and reputedly mad. Brashen periodically shelters aboard the derelict, and Amber befriends the ship, offering to buy him to prevent New Traders from dismantling him for wizardwood. Paragon alternates between gratitude and hostility, but Amber persists.

Aboard the Reaper, Althea survives serpent attacks, an attempt to drug and kidnap her for another crew, and a grueling seal hunt. When the ship reaches port and she reveals her real name, the captain recognizes her as a woman and refuses to issue her ticket. However, Althea secures passage home aboard the liveship Ophelia. The ship's figurehead reveals a secret pact among the liveships: If the Vivacia confirms she is being mistreated, all liveships will pressure their families to intervene, with the ultimate threat of refusing to sail. The Ophelia's Captain Tenira lets Althea serve openly as mate, giving her the legitimate ship's ticket she needs.

Kyle sails the Vivacia to Jamaillia to buy slaves for transport to Chalced. Wintrow escapes in the harbor but is arrested and tattooed with the Satrap's slave mark. Kyle buys him back at auction and orders Torg to take him to a tattooist who marks the boy with the Vivacia's figurehead image, branding him as ship's property. Loaded with slaves, the Vivacia sails north. Wintrow descends into the holds to tend the captives and encounters Sa'Adar, a fellow priest imprisoned among them. Sa'Adar orchestrates a violent uprising during a storm, and most of the crew is killed, including the first mate Gantry and Wintrow's friend Mild. Wintrow takes the wheel, guided by the Vivacia's awareness of currents and rocks, and steers the crippled ship through a treacherous channel with his injured father's help.

Kennit lost his leg when a dying sea serpent seized him during the boarding of a slaveship; Etta saved his life by severing the limb, but the wound festers. When the Marietta overtakes the drifting Vivacia, Sa'Adar tries to throw Kyle to the serpents. Wintrow seizes the fever-weakened Kennit and threatens him, while the Vivacia roars that she will kill everyone aboard if Wintrow is harmed. Wintrow strikes a bargain: He will use his priestly healing skills to save Kennit's life, which requires further amputation of the infected leg, in exchange for Kyle's survival. Kennit agrees, then courts the Vivacia herself with promises and endearments. The ship responds with unexpected warmth, and Kennit's competent crew restores order aboard the vessel.

Far below the waves, Maulkin's tangle has dwindled to three serpents. They detect the scent of She Who Remembers, a being from their ancient lore who preserves the collective wisdom needed for the serpents' rebirth, but the source is the Vivacia's wizardwood hull rather than a fellow serpent. Maulkin fears that without She Who Remembers, all serpents will lose their memories and intelligence. The novel ends with multiple storylines unresolved: Althea sailing toward Bingtown with her ship's ticket and the liveships' promise of support, Wintrow trapped aboard the Vivacia with his father's captor, Kennit in possession of his coveted liveship but near death, and the serpents' ancient mystery deepening.
