On May 1, 1996, Quinn, now a private investigator for Midwest Investigators of Omaha, Inc., surveils a woman in an Albertsons grocery store. His boss insists he wear an itchy fake beard as a disguise. As he follows his target, who is unusually dressed up for a Wednesday morning, a memory surfaces of his father paying for a struggling man’s groceries while allowing the man to believe the transaction had simply gone through, a lesson in preserving dignity. Distracted by the memory and another shopper, Quinn loses track of his mark. He hurries to the same checkout line and asks the cashier what the woman purchased. The cashier tells him she bought wine, cheese, crackers, and a bottle opener. Pleased with this lead, Quinn quickly leaves the store.
Jules visits her friend Lucy in the county jail. Lucy, dressed in an orange jumpsuit, was arrested for attacking a convicted sex offender. Afterward, other men she had previously attacked also came forward, compounding the charges against her. Jules has returned to town at the request of Jack, their FBI contact. She confides in Lucy that she is staying with her parents but omits that she is there to act as bait for the May Day Killer—a desperate plan approved by FBI headquarters.
