A year after his uncle’s death, Quinn lives in Recanati, Italy, working in a bar. He has spent the year traveling, at one point tracking down and brutally beating Sven—the soldier responsible for Guiseppe’s death in Brussels, saying afterward, “That’s for Giuseppe” (294). A waitress, Lucia, delivers a package to his room containing a VHS tape. The tape is a 20/20 interview with Jules, who discusses her abduction and the ongoing search for other victims of the May Day Killer. The interview notes that police believe Patrick Knox murdered his own sister, Nadine Riley—Quinn’s mother—after she discovered evidence linking him to the crimes, including that his trucking routes matched the towns the missing women lived. The interviewer notes that all the May Day killer’s victims looked alike, with similar features and coloring.
The interview also discusses the FBI’s incorrect profile, which had predicted a perpetrator with a law-enforcement background and high IQ hiding in plain sight. Jules reports that Nadine’s boyfriend, Randy Calhoon, who was framed for the murder, has been released after the new county prosecutor joined the petition for his release. Looking directly at the camera, Jules asks Quinn to come home.
Later that night, Quinn sits behind the bar, reading a book of poetry.
