The sixth installment in the
Dungeon Crawler Carl series, a LitRPG (a genre blending role-playing game mechanics with narrative fiction) saga in which Earth has been destroyed by aliens and its survivors forced into a deadly, televised dungeon game, opens with a prologue from a previous crawl season. Odette, a game guide managing a team of crawlers, brokers an illegal deal with Huanxin Jinx, a wealthy alien heiress, to rig a tenth-floor puzzle. When Huanxin demands a larger cut, Odette cancels and engineers an alternative that kills Uzzi, the brother of her crawler Mordecai. Mordecai vows revenge.
Carl, a former Coast Guardsman fighting in his boxers, and his sapient cat Princess Donut enter the eighth floor, "The Ghosts of Earth," which recreates Earth's pre-apocalypse surface, populated by intangible memory ghosts whose possessions remain tangible. Crawlers must form squads, capture regional folklore monsters as totem cards for the T'Ghee card combat system (a collectible-card battle format unique to this floor), obtain exit keys during an assault phase, and fight back to stairwells in a final phase. They land in Havana, Cuba, where Donut selects the Master Telephone Psychic class and game guide Mordecai appears as a Hills Cyclops.
From loot boxes, Donut receives fire-immunity gear and the summoning tome Legionnaires of the Damned. Carl's celestial prize is the Scavenger's Daughter, a divine back patch granting the Soul Reaper ability, which charges melee attacks with slain enemies' essence.
In Havana, they meet Sister Ines Quiteria, a cat-girl nun and Poet Laureate; Anton Lopez, a tattooed Fugitive; and Paz Lo, an armored Santero cleric who worships the god Ogun alongside Anton. Initial tensions ease as both groups cooperate to capture totems.
Carl and Donut enter the corrupted Colón Cemetery, a settlement of ghommids (spirit creatures) driven mad by Asojano, a fallen orisha (deity) and city boss. The temple contains a Celestial Thorn Room forcing a choice among seven broken god-shrines. Katia, Carl's shapeshifting ally, urgently messages him to repair the shrine of Yemaya, claiming it will save both herself and Donut from the Crown of the Sepsis Whore, a cursed tiara forcing its wearer into a death match. Carl has his bodyguard Bomo rebuild Yemaya's shrine while Donut uses Laundry Day, a spell that strips equipped gear, to remove Bomo's layered armor and then reanimates the pieces with Legionnaires of the Damned to battle Asojano. Carl flags the dying orisha as a totem but contracts Slugpox, a disease spawning combat slugs from his body.
Ogun appears to punish his worshippers, cursing Paz with an incurable condition and killing Anton. As Paz dies, he reveals that Sister Ines's cat-girl race carries a passive loyalty-inducing skill and that she was imprisoned for poisoning every nun in her convent. Sister Ines stabs the dying Paz with a team flag, trapping him as a totem, and flees.
The resurrected Yemaya and Huanxin's sponsored goddess Eileithyia grant boons. Eileithyia secretly proposes a deal: If Carl ensures Odette becomes the adjutant (a non-crawler advisor) for their team in the ninth-floor Faction Wars competition, Huanxin will guarantee votes to remove team protections and resolve Katia's crown curse. Katia reveals she possesses a lock box containing the Orchid of Eileithyia's Grace, which can neutralize the curse, but the final seal requires an assassination quest from the Guild of Suffering, hidden inside the Desperado Club.
On the documentary show
Shadow Boxer, host Rosetta Thagra uses coded dialogue to direct Carl toward the toraline root vegetable, connected to special portal-making inks. Carl deduces his sponsors employ former cookbook authors communicating crucial information through indirect channels.
The pair builds their card deck, capturing Raul, an insecure crab warrior; receiving Uzi Jesus, a defiant undead totem, from fellow crawler Florin; and flagging Shi Maria, the Bedlam Bride, a demigod spider who joins after Carl promises to escort her to the ninth floor. At a Faction Wars preproduction meeting, the changeling NPC Juice Box demands NPCs be recognized as a tenth team.
Katia is found incapacitated by dungeon drugs, but Carl presses forward with the assassination despite objections from Imani, an allied healer. A demon escapes from the Nothing, an extradimensional void, destroying most of the club. Katia kills the target, breaking the lock box's final seal and obtaining the orchid. Carl hires the club's strippers as mercenaries.
On Odette's show, she announces she will sponsor a goddess for the Celestial Ascendency (a competition among deities for power) rather than serve as adjutant; Carl selects Baroness Victory, an orc attorney, instead. Privately, Odette confesses her guilt over Mordecai, warns Carl against trusting Huanxin, reveals the crawl harvests fuel from biological overgrowth on seeded planets, and claims allies are working to shut down the system permanently.
Phase Two teleports them to the Florida Keys, where Carl discovers a spliced-in memory of his dying father's trailer in Iowa and a half-brother named Asher whose existence he never knew. The key boss, a Reminiscence Hydra with heads resembling people from their lives, is the first boss the AI created independently, signaling its growing autonomy. Carl defeats the hydra using fire, obtains the key, and earns the Emberus devotee rank, granting enhanced fire resistance.
Louis, an allied crawler, organizes a Christmas gathering. Carl encounters a Residual, an ancient collective-mind alien, at a Florida shelter before his liaison intervenes. The AI seizes operational control from the Borant Corporation, and Imani's squad is killed when her own totem turns on them.
Phase Three returns everyone to Cuba. Quan Ch, a rival crawler, steals both keys using advanced card tactics. Carl reveals his secret weapon: hundreds of sluggalos, combat slugs bred from his Slugpox infection. Reinforcements arrive through Doggy Door portals, fast-travel waypoints linking guild members' safe rooms worldwide. Katia, Li Jun (an allied crawler), and others join Carl for the final battle.
Carl's zombie turkeys trigger a worldwide outbreak that the AI escalates into a Demon Eviction, ejecting demons from Sheol (the dungeon's hell dimension) into zombie shells. Sister Ines, driven mad by her nebular sponsors (an alien faction), charms a massive snake boss possessed by the demon prince Amayon. When Louis kills Sister Ines, the goddess Ysalte, a nebular-sponsored deity, appears and marks Louis for death. Atop a collapsing skyscraper, a massive card battle erupts; Paz's totem uses a self-destruct ability to decapitate and kill Ysalte. Carl convinces Raul the crab to fertilize ocean eggs, generating souls for Amayon's portal spell, then bathes the demon in Sheol fire to power it.
Donut accidentally combines Carl with Shi Maria using a Golden Combo card, a consumable that temporarily merges two entities. The spider seizes control of Carl's body, crafts ink from the toraline root, gouges out Li Jun's eye, and tattoos the Eye of the Bedlam Bride onto Carl's chest, permanently binding herself to him.
Amayon's portal spell scours the world's surface, exposing buried stairwells. Carl lets viewers decide remaining votes via an emergency action; the audience removes sponsor safety protections and approves Juice Box's tenth NPC team. Tserendolgor, an allied squad leader, donates her equipment before detonating herself rather than fight fellow crawlers. Carl, Donut, and Imani ride the portal into the stairwell as over 33,000 crawlers survive to the ninth floor.
The epilogue reveals converging forces: The Syndicate Council, the dungeon's overarching government, deploys 150,000 mercenaries to exterminate crawlers; former crawler Tipid commands a freighter of 50,000 ex-crawlers recruited for Carl's faction; and the Residual agent Agatha prepares to enter the dungeon, representing a faction whose ultimate goal is eradicating all biological life to free an entity called the Eulogist.
