A Parade of Horribles (2026) is the eighth novel in the bestselling Dungeon Crawler Carl series by Matt Dinniman. A prominent work in the LitRPG (Literary Role-Playing Game) subgenre, the novel blends science fiction, fantasy, and video game mechanics like quests, character classes, and skill levels. Continuing the darkly comedic saga, the story follows human crawler Carl and his sapient cat, Princess Donut, as they enter the 10th floor of a deadly galactic game show.
The new challenge is a series of seven demolition-derby-style races where the last-place team is eliminated, forcing the dwindling number of survivors into precarious alliances and brutal confrontations. As they attempt to manage the treacherous tracks and the AI’s manipulative rule changes, Carl and Donut navigate themes such as The Dangers of Moral Choices Amidst Oppression, Commodifying Suffering to Perpetuate Cruelty, and Solidarity as the Disruptor of Unjust Systems.
The Dungeon Crawler Carl series began as a serialized web novel on the platform Royal Road before becoming a breakout success, particularly in audiobook format, where it has won awards and become an Audible bestseller. Dinniman’s series is known for its black, irreverent humor, complex world-building, and unflinching critique of corporate-driven entertainment. In A Parade of Horribles, the crawlers’ struggle for survival evolves into a full-blown rebellion against the game itself.

Having survived the ninth floor, human crawler Carl and his sapient cat, Princess Donut, enter the 10th floor of the deadly galactic game show, Dungeon Crawler World. The floor’s theme is “Don’t come in last,” a series of seven demolition-derby-style races, or “heats,” where the last-place team is eliminated. The competing teams respectively include crawlers and NPCs (non-playing characters). Carl and Donut form a two-person team, selecting a “Big Shot Chicken” food truck as their vehicle and a gremlin named Hedy as their mechanic. Fellow crawler Prepotente warns that if more than one team is eliminated per heat, the system will replace the missing teams with other crawlers, forcing crawlers to race against each other.
In the first heat, set in the Caves of the Screeching Death Manatees, Carl drives. They encounter the crashed minivan of Team Free Love, a pair of bugbears (goblin-like creatures) named Jasha and Radoslav. To prevent the bugbears’ elimination and a future crawler-versus-crawler matchup, Carl builds a trailer and tows their van to safety. Carl’s team—known as the Royal Court of Princess Donut—finish near the back but avoid last place, making an uneasy alliance with the bugbears and an enemy of the abrasive Team Sparkles, composed of Dwight the unicorn and Lucienne the mandagot, a rodent-like creature.
For the second heat, Carl hires a Crocodilian “stripper”—the novel’s term for the exotic male dancers of the dungeon clubs—named Bucket Boy to drive through a track of rolling hills pelted by giant hail. Their audience-voted upgrade is a talking throne for Donut, which she names Dorota. A fight at the starting line results in Team Sparkles destroying another vehicle, leaving only one elimination slot before a crawler team is introduced in the next heat.
The racers must defeat a level 170 gatekeeper monster, a kangaroo-like creature named Prison Pocket, with a bunch of dead joeys stuck in his marsupial pouch. Carl realizes the pouch is the creature’s weakness, dons the skin of a dead joey to trick the ’roo, and hops into the pouch. Inside the pouch, Carl plants powerful bombs, killing the beast. Despite this victory, they are the last of the surviving teams.
In the third heat, a steep downhill race through swarms of skull-wearing creatures called Sugar Hermits, Carl hires another stripper, Gluteus Maxx, as their driver. Gluteus takes performance-enhancing drugs and drives with reckless abandon. To survive, Donut uses her Temporary Macaroni spell to create a protective tunnel of giant pasta through which their truck passes safely. The race culminates in a massive crash at the finish line instigated by Dwight, but Carl and Donut are awarded first place, while Dwight’s partner Lucienne is killed.
Between races, Carl is drawn into several critical subplots. He receives a quest from the dungeon AI to reunite Dong Quixote, his stripper ally, with his long-lost love, the mantaur—a creature with two torsos and four arms—Corcunda. Corcunda was vertically split in two by a spell, and one half of him—Corky -is being held captive by the ruthless Lady Dominators team, comprised of the womantaurs (the female equivalent of the mantaurs) Genesis and Rapture. Before uniting him with Dong Quixote, Carl must first make Corky whole by fusing him with his other half—Porky.
Carl enters a hidden Stage Performance Guild by winning a karaoke challenge, singing “Take on Me,” and finds Porky, who agrees to help. Meanwhile, Carl receives intel from former crawlers and his old game guide, Mordecai, that the game is designed to eliminate all crawlers, making it necessary for him to find a way out of the dungeon. Concurrently, Akuma, a war mage or magician, reveals a potential escape route from the dungeon called the Pineapple Cabaret—a secret dimension built by former crawlers to shelter NPCs.
Akuma needs Carl’s help to reclaim the Pineapple Cabaret from hostile forces for his own people; the crawlers can also seek sanctuary there. Carl and Akuma test the escape route by sending the poisoned crawler Li Na through a system exploit involving a “cleaner bot” item; a magical cactus confirms she arrived safely. The goddess of chaos, Eris, appears in the dungeon, forcing a choice upon Carl that could lead to the death of Donut, his friends, or himself. By grabbing her five-sided coin, he selects a fifth, unknown outcome.
The fourth heat takes place on a jungle track, where the adversaries are red-haired humanoid creatures known as “ginger” cannibals. Carl’s newly hired mercenary team—Olga the toad, Finley the badger, and Quemada the fire fairy—is quickly compromised when a ginger cannibal chieftain puts Olga in a coma. Finley takes over driving, and the team manage to make it to a pit stop. However, at the pit stop, members of the team One Fine Pig deliberately run over and kill all three mercenaries, the cruelty of their actions enraging Carl. Carl secretly plants bombs in the truck of the Tigrans, designed to spare Penelope the pig, a member of the team Carl deems innocent. One Fine Pig is eliminated when the bombs go off.
For the fifth heat, a race through a factory, Carl’s team is joined by the fleshmancer Grigori, who will help put together Porky and Corky, and a dying Dong Quixote. During the race, Grigori performs a gruesome ritual to fuse the two halves of Corcunda back together. The reunion summons the god Grull, who marks Corcunda for death. In a final act of devotion, Dong sacrifices himself for his beloved, charging the god on Corcunda’s back, which causes Grull to retreat.
The sixth and seventh heats are set inside a human apartment building, with the crawlers shrunken to a tiny size. A surprise attack from the dungeon boss, Scolopendra, transforms Carl into a dachshund. The apartments are revealed to be AI-generated “what-if” scenarios from the crawlers’ pasts, filled with “human shells” that burst into invulnerable scarab beetles. To avoid last place, Carl is forced to detonate a pre-planted bomb, killing his friends, the NPCs, Jasha and Radoslav. At the end of the heat, the AI deliberately pits the remaining friends against each other for the final race.
Facing an impossible final heat, Carl and his allies devise a plan. Many crawlers, including Louis, Chris, and Britney, use the now-confirmed Pineapple Cabaret escape routes. For the final “race,” the remaining crawlers band together. At the start, Donut kills the antagonistic Russian team facing Imani and Elle, and Carl’s team eliminates Dwight. They then ascend all seven floors of the building after Carl blows a vertical hole through the structure with shaped charges.
Osvaldo, a crawler, attempts to betray them and reach the exit portal first, but Britney, having secretly entered the portal, kills him. The survivors proceed to the 11th floor, a long road lined with avatars of dead NPCs called “Horribles.” Carl uses his quest reward to summon the dungeon boss, Scolopendra, into the arena. Carl’s true, secret plan is enacted: surviving the floor alive with his allies by destroying Scolopendra and Carl’s own patron god, Emberus.
Carl taunts Emberus into the arena, where Donut uses Katia’s special bolts to make him vulnerable, allowing the god Taranis to deliver the killing blow. The resulting explosion devastates the arena, reducing Scolopendra to a puddle. In the chaos, Donut uses the wrong Enriched Pet Biscuit on Scolopendra. Instead of becoming a simple pet, the dungeon boss is transformed into a new, sapient, level 1 crawler named Sexy Scolopendra, who joins their party as the floor ends.
