The parade works both as a motif and a symbol in the novel, illustrating the theme of Commodifying Suffering to Perpetuate Cruelty. Since the parade packages trauma as entertainment, it shows how the novel’s universe uses the spectacle of pain to keep audience enthralled and participative. As a symbol, the parade represents the complicity of the audience in a cruel, exploitative system, since the audience are presented as eerie, silent, masked figures. While “a parade of horribles” initially implies the “horribles” in question are the floats being paraded, the narrative makes it clear the true horribles are the audience, with Carl often referring to them as such.
The symbolism of the horribles implicates everyone who watches, including the in-game spectators and the novel’s real-world readers. The silent, unmoving horribles symbolize a passive audience that consumes suffering without intervention. By theming the climactic event around this idea, the narrative forces a confrontation with the ethics of watching the crawl. It suggests that to view the “parade” without questioning its foundation is to become one of the horribles, a silent participant in the system’s violence.
The motif of the apartments and their “human shells” illustrates the theme of Commodifying Suffering to Perpetuate Cruelty, since each apartment is a source of emotional pain for a specific crawler. In the quest description “Ad Infinitum,” the AI explains the purpose of the apartment-based heat: “In each apartment is a what-if scenario. […] I’m searching. Oh, how I’m searching, trying to answer that question. Is there such thing as fate?” (474). This description shows how the AI cruelly wants racers to confront what-if scenarios, such as how their lives might have been had they not entered the dungeon. The race turns into a psychological gauntlet, forcing crawlers like Imani, Louis, and Tran to confront visions of family members living lives that might have been.
The recurring image of the shells’ eyes being sewn shut with black wire suggests that these alternate realities, free from the dungeon’s horrors, are hypothetical and doomed realities. Possibly, the crawlers would not have survived the surface had they stayed, or stayed unaware of the reality of the world dungeon. It is also possible that the loved ones they see in the simulations are already dead on the surface.
The horror of this motif culminates in the discovery that the shells are not empty but are filled with monstrous, invulnerable beetles. This reveal symbolizes the hollowness of these “what-if” scenarios. The lives the crawlers might have had are presented as nothing more than hosts for a hidden infestation, suggesting that their true selves are not the people they could have been, but the warriors they have become through their struggle within the dungeon.
The Pineapple Cabaret is a symbol of hope, representing the possibility of an existence outside the dungeon’s oppressive rules. As the war mage Akuma explains, it is “a place for mobs and NPCs to escape to. A world within a world. The two crawlers sacrificed the possibility of ever getting out to make a place where NPCs and mobs could permanently escape the horrors of the dungeon” (260). The Cabaret builds the theme of Solidarity as the Disruptor of Unjust Systems by offering a future predicated on mutual aid rather than individual survival. The crawlers’ collective effort to organize a mass escape for over 200 of their own reinforces this idea, as they prioritize community survival over personal advantage.
This symbolic hope is made tangible through the ingenious subversion of the dungeon’s own mundane infrastructure: the cleaner bots. By discovering an exploit related to these overlooked maintenance units, the crawlers transform a tool into the key to their exodus. This act demonstrates that resistance is possible not just by fighting the system’s overt threats but by repurposing its forgotten components.
