Deeply proud of his freedom, he scrounges for his own food rather than living as a kept pet. He is highly observant and proud of his self-reliance. He also possesses a boundless appreciation for the natural beauty of the world, though his curiosity sometimes puts his safety at risk.

Freya is an enormous bison who serves as one of the three Keepers of the Equilibrium in the park. She acts as a nurturing figure to Johannes and provides him with guidance. Bound to her enclosure due to her massive size and age, she relies entirely on Johannes to act as her scout in the wider park. She occasionally keeps harsh truths to herself in order to protect the feelings of those she cares about.

Bertrand is a large, proud seagull and Johannes's closest friend. As one of the park's Assistant Eyes, he helps monitor human and animal activity from the sky. He has a melancholy disposition and a love for daring physical stunts, often expressing a desire for a higher, heroic purpose in his life.

Sonja is a one-eyed squirrel who serves as one of Johannes's Assistant Eyes. Initially timid and hesitant, she carefully observes the park and supports Johannes in his duties. Despite her quiet nature and physical scars, she possesses a deep well of inner bravery when her friends are threatened.

Helene is a cheerful, well-traveled goat who temporarily visits the park to clear weeds. Ostracized by her herd due to the irregular, crisscrossed pattern on her horns, she maintains a positive outlook. She shares stories of the outside world that captivate Johannes and expand his understanding of life beyond the park.

Meredith is one of the three ancient bison who rule the park as Keepers of the Equilibrium. She is a massive creature who helps process the information Johannes brings back to the enclosure to maintain harmony among the animals. She occasionally expresses a desire for more space to roam beyond her enclosure.

Samuel is the third ancient bison who helps rule the park. Like Freya and Meredith, he is confined to a paddock and depends entirely on Johannes to report the park's news. He brings a cynical but steady presence to the leadership trio, carefully evaluating any threats to the park's balance.

Yolanda is a clumsy but highly observant pelican who works as one of Johannes's Assistant Eyes. She patrols the park from the sky and helps coordinate information, bringing a unique aerial perspective and a literate understanding of human signs to the animal alliance.

Angus is a rotund raccoon and a key member of the Assistant Eyes. With his dexterous paws and nocturnal habits, he monitors the park's human visitors and structures. He is practical and sharply observant, often bringing crucial details about human behavior to Johannes's attention.

Twisty is a human thief who sneaks into the park looking for targets. Seeing an opportunity in Johannes's friendly nature, he uses a leash to capture the dog for a criminal scheme. This terrifying encounter introduces Johannes to the harsh reality of captivity.

Rainbow is a bearded, scarred human thief who works alongside Twisty. He is aggressive and threatens the captured Johannes, wanting to flee the park quickly with their stolen goods.

Joanie is one of Johannes's siblings. Born in a hollow tree in the park, she chose to leave the wild behind and live as an indoor pet with human owners.

Janie is one of Johannes's littermates. Unlike Johannes, she accepted human adoption when she was a puppy and lives outside the park as a kept dog.

Steven is Johannes's brother. He departed their hollow tree birthplace as a puppy, choosing the comfort of human ownership over a wild life in the park.
