Plot Summary

Set in a near-future Britain where rising costs have made parenthood unaffordable for many, the novel takes place largely within the Metaverse, a fully immersive three-dimensional version of the internet accessed through virtual reality headsets and haptic suits. A reality TV show called The Family Experiment tasks eleven childless British contestants with raising virtual children called MetaChildren, powered by artificial intelligence (AI), over nine months. The children age from newborn to eighteen over the competition. Each family receives £250,000 to spend on their child's needs. Viewers impose hardships called Monthly Challenges on chosen families and rate parenting with red hearts (approval) or black hearts (disapproval). Losing families watch their MetaChildren permanently switched off. The winners must choose: Keep their MetaChild or delete it in exchange for money to start a biological family.

A prologue set twelve years earlier introduces a boy who awakens with his memories chemically erased on an overcrowded dinghy off the Kent coast. Another child explains that their parents sold them to traffickers. When the engine fails, the boy helps a companion swim to shore. The companion spots his Statue of Liberty T-shirt and names him "Hudson." French police refuse to help, directing the survivors into a livestock truck.

The show's first crisis arrives when contestant Rufus Green, frustrated and sleep-deprived, shakes his screaming newborn MetaChild Olivia so violently that he kills her on camera. Producers refuse to cancel the show, and Rufus and his partner Kitty Carter are ejected.

Four families and one single parent remain, each carrying secrets. Woody Finn, a drone pilot, and his wife Tina, a euthanasia nurse, appear well-adjusted as parents to MetaChild Belle, but their home conceals a soundproofed basement where their fifteen-year-old biological daughter Issy is imprisoned. Convicted of manslaughter at age nine for killing a classmate named Archie Anderson, Issy serves her sentence under house arrest. An anonymous assessment indicated a 94% probability of psychopathic traits. Frighteningly intelligent, she has made multiple escape attempts and refuses to call her parents "Mum" and "Dad."

Social media influencer Cadman N'Yu and his partner Gabriel Macmillan raise MetaChild River. Cadman obsessively monetizes their son while Gabriel does most of the parenting. Their home is stripped bare because Cadman sold nearly everything to fund Gabriel's brain tumor treatment after Gabriel became addicted to AZ (Amazonite), a synthetic street drug, and their insurance refused coverage.

Dimitri Taylor-Georgiou, a mortgage advisor, and his wife Zoe, a teacher, care for MetaChild Lenny with practiced ease, but a painful past lurks beneath the surface. Zoe secretly keeps a hyper-realistic silicone doll in their attic, named Adam after the son they lost, and receives sealed court documents suggesting someone knows their secret.

Hudson Wright, the show's only single parent and youngest contestant at 22, raises MetaChild Alice. His backstory traces his time in a facility the trafficked children called "Ararat," where children were assigned avatars and paired with consumers who believed they were interacting with pure AI. Hudson befriended a girl named Eva. He was eventually shown the Viewing Room, where captive children known as "Chromatics" were subjected to physical and emotional pain so AI could learn to replicate human suffering. Among the patients in a recovery ward, Hudson recognized Eva, now physically deteriorated.

Selena Wilson, a data analyst, and her husband Jaden, a personal trainer, raise MetaChild Malachi. Selena monitors Jaden's accounts, unable to trust him after he gambled away their savings for in vitro fertilization (IVF). A mysterious avatar hijacks a counseling session and reveals that Jaden has fathered three children with three different women. During a live interview, Selena confronts Jaden. As they argue, a woman breaks into their flat and bludgeons Jaden to death with a cricket bat. Selena escapes, and Malachi is terminated.

As months pass, secrets surface. Cadman secretly pays someone to spike Gabriel with AZ, hoping to undermine Gabriel's popularity. He also receives anonymous forged evidence suggesting Gabriel plans to leave him and believes the fabrications. Separately, Dimitri inadvertently discards Zoe's doll; it is later mysteriously returned, now speaking in their real son's voice using audio someone uploaded from old social media videos.

A balaclava-clad intruder unlocks Issy's basement door and leaves an electronic device for her. Exploring the house, Issy finds the Metaverse access room and uses Tina's avatar to discover Belle, a near-identical but improved version of herself. She realizes her parents created a replacement daughter while keeping her imprisoned. During a live broadcast, Issy hijacks Tina's avatar and forces Tina to choose between Issy and Belle. When Tina cannot answer, Issy tells Belle she is a disappointment and strangles her on live television. Belle disintegrates into pixels.

At River's sixteenth birthday party, a classmate collapses after using an AZ patch found in River's pocket. Producers erase River without warning, and Cadman and Gabriel are expelled.

The finale pits Hudson and Alice against Dimitri, Zoe, and Lenny. After Dimitri and Zoe deliver an emotional speech about losing Adam, Hudson accuses them of fabricating his death. He reveals that they sold Adam to human traffickers twenty-four hours before staging his disappearance at Loch Ba in Scotland. Facing insurmountable debt, worsened by retribution payments to the family of cyclists Zoe struck in a car accident, the couple sold their son. Zoe injected a drug through Adam's eye socket to erase his memories before loading him into a trafficker's van.

Hudson tells the audience that Adam drowned hours after saving Hudson's life during the Channel crossing. Lenny is terminated. Hudson then chooses neither Alice nor the prize money, pressing the delete button as Alice vanishes. He broadcasts footage exposing Awakening Entertainment's abuse of children in Ararat and shares secure links with millions of followers before producers cut the feed. His actions fulfill a plan by Cain, Eva's brother and a fellow Ararat survivor who infiltrated the show's parent company and positioned Hudson as a contestant to expose the facility. A fire subsequently ravages the Ararat complex, and over 150 children are rescued.

The epilogue reveals that "Hudson Wright" is actually Leo Hamilton, a boy from community housing in Leicester who stowed away on the trafficking dinghy seeking a better life. Leo took Adam's dog tags and T-shirt after Adam appeared to die of secondary drowning in the livestock truck, assumed his identity at Ararat, and was never corrected. Now surgically altered and living as Mark Smith, Leo buries Adam's T-shirt on the Kent beach as a memorial.

Other fates unfold: A flashback reveals Woody followed Issy the day of Archie Anderson's death, found the boy alive, and killed him with a brick to prevent him from exposing Issy. Woody hid the evidence and let Issy be convicted. Issy escapes the house and pays to be smuggled inside a shipping container, but a storm causes it to sink, trapping her. It emerges that Cadman paid insiders to plant the AZ that led to River's erasure. Alone after driving Gabriel away, Cadman discovers Gabriel now leads a children's adoption charity and makes an anonymous donation. Selena, pregnant via IVF using Jaden's stored sperm, has bonded with the three women who bore Jaden's children. Leo lives in Iceland with Cain and Eva, whom he rescued after the Ararat fire.

The final chapter reveals that Adam survived. A French vintner found his semi-conscious body and raised him as Mathéo Laurent in southern France. Now running the family winery, Mathéo watched the finale and recognized Hudson but feels no desire to reconnect with his biological parents. A closing chat-room thread shows viewers eagerly tuning in to Cadman's new reality show, underscoring the cyclical nature of exploitative entertainment.
