Plot Summary

Connie introduces herself as the devoted daughter and full-time carer for her mother Gwen, an elderly widow who has vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. As Connie navigates Gwen’s unpredictable moods and memory lapses in their small village of Avringstone, she struggles with her own financial precarity. Her world is disrupted by the arrival of Paul Michael, a handsome and charming handyman sent by a charity, Help for Homes, to assist with odd jobs. Connie is immediately suspicious of Paul, and her apprehension grows as he quickly ingratiates himself with Gwen. Paul’s influence over Gwen escalates until he is a constant fixture in her life, taking her on outings and encouraging her to be more independent from Connie, who feels increasingly marginalized and alarmed.

Connie’s attempts to warn the neighbors about Paul are consistently undermined. When Paul takes Gwen on an unannounced two-day trip to Clacton-on-Sea, a frantic Connie reports Gwen missing, sparking a police search. Upon their return, Paul frames the incident as a misunderstanding, producing a misplaced Post-it note and an email sent to Connie’s junk folder to prove he informed her of their plans. He paints Connie as a jealous, overbearing daughter, a narrative that the neighbors and even the police begin to accept. 

Soon after, Paul moves into Gwen’s house, claiming to be between homes, and Connie discovers that he and Gwen have begun a sexual relationship. Connie’s world further implodes when she is forced to leave for several weeks, telling everyone she has work commitments in Italy. She returns to discover that Gwen is dead after an apparent fall down the stairs. More shockingly, Paul reveals that he and Gwen were married, making him the sole heir to her entire estate.

Devastated and destitute, Connie is confronted by Paul, who reveals that he knows her true identity: She is Rachel Evans, a career con artist who infiltrated Gwen’s life with the goal of inheriting her money. He also knows that she wasn’t in Italy during her recent absence; she was in prison, serving a short term for fraud. A tense stalemate ensues. 

With nothing left to lose, Connie launches an investigation into Paul. She secures a volunteer position at Help for Homes, where she uncovers a list of other vulnerable women whom Paul had “helped” with the aid of an employee there, Derek Reid. She identifies three previous victims—Eliza Holmes, Lucy Holden, and Alice McKenzie—who all died in suspicious “accidents” shortly after marrying Paul, who used a different surname each time. Breaking into a house Paul inherited from another victim he claimed was his mother, Connie finds a trove of damning evidence: fake passports, love letters to his victims, and an illegal psychoactive drug called Omixinol. She also makes a stunning discovery: Paul’s real mother, Sue Fernsby, is still alive in a low-budget nursing home.

Armed with this evidence, Connie blackmails Paul in a tense pub meeting, demanding he sign over Gwen’s estate, or she will go to the police. Paul appears to agree but instead, he unleashes a campaign of psychological terror, sending Connie video clips he secretly recorded of her sleeping and showering in her bungalow. Terrified, Connie moves in with her neighbor, Walter Clark. Paul retaliates by murdering Walter, brutally cutting out his tongue as a warning. A panicked Connie reports the murder to Detective Sergeant Krisha Ahuja, who reveals that Walter had already anonymously sent the police copies of the evidence Connie found, triggering an investigation. 

Paul becomes a wanted man when his next victim, Fran Brown, survives his murder attempt. Connie finds contact information for Fran’s son, who lives in Dubai, and tells him her suspicions about Paul. When Fran is later injured and in the hospital, Jon authorizes a toxicology report that confirms the presence of Omixinol, confirming Connie’s suspicions. 

Now a fugitive, Paul ambushes Connie at a desolate train station. After a brutal chase, he overpowers her on a railway bridge and attempts to cut out her tongue. Police, alerted by a panic alarm Connie had been wearing on Krisha’s recommendation, arrive on the scene. In a final, desperate act, Paul throws Connie off the bridge directly into the path of a speeding train.

Connie miraculously survives the fall because Paul threw her on the wrong track, just next to the one the train was traveling on. She sustains life-altering injuries that require months of hospitalization and leave her reliant on a walker. Paul is arrested and, facing overwhelming evidence, pleads guilty to five murders and the attempted murder of Connie. 

During a prison visit, Connie confronts him one last time. Paul confesses his motive: He is haunted by the “voices” of dishonest women who remind him of his abusive mother, Sue, and he kills them and cuts out their tongues to silence them. Before she leaves, Paul makes a veiled threat against Meredith Harper, Gwen’s estranged elderly cousin, with whom Connie has recently connected and entrusted Gwen’s will to for safekeeping. 

Panicked, Connie tries to contact Meredith, only to discover her house is empty, and she has vanished. The will is still there, but the final, signed page is missing, rendering it void. As Gwen’s only living relative, Meredith has inherited the entire estate. 

One year later, Meredith is living a life of luxury, perpetually cruising the world. A final chapter from her perspective reveals she orchestrated everything. After learning of Gwen’s death and Connie’s story, she saw an opportunity for revenge against the cousin who stole her fiancé, Bill, 60 years ago. Now enjoying her newfound fortune, her new companion on the cruise is Derek Reid, although she doesn’t know that the man was Paul’s accomplice. Connie is left penniless and grappling with the wreckage of her life.
