The Final Target

Arden Bowie, a debut novelist and part-time bookseller in Columbus, Ohio, holds her first book signing for her thriller Whispers at Next Chapter bookstore. Orphaned at fourteen when her parents were killed in a traffic accident, Arden was raised by her aunt Jen and uncle Doug Rogan. The signing is a success, with her family present, including her cousin and best friend Zoey. The last customer, a man named Dustin, lingers to compliment her appearance. The bookstore manager notices him hitting on Arden, but Arden dismisses the concern.

Dustin appears at Arden's subsequent events, each time pushing harder for personal time. She grows uneasy but maintains professional distance, while he reframes her general advice about perseverance as evidence of a personal connection. When Arden reluctantly agrees to a single coffee, Dustin fabricates a tragic backstory, claiming his father died when he was eight and his mother died of cancer when he was thirteen. Because Arden lost her own parents young, she feels genuine sympathy and takes his hand, deepening his delusion. His parents, detectives later reveal, are both alive.

Meanwhile, Arden's career advances. Her agent sells a second novel, and she travels to New York for publisher meetings. She serves as maid of honor at Zoey's wedding before Zoey and her husband, Boone Yeoh, relocate to Oregon. During this period, someone breaks into Arden's apartment, taking personal items of sentimental value, including her mother's locket, but leaving cash untouched. She changes her locks, adds a dead bolt, and installs a hidden camera.

One evening, Dustin shows up uninvited at Arden's door with flowers. When she orders him to leave, he backhands her hard enough to slam her head into the door, then strangles her, slaps her repeatedly, tears off her shirt, and sexually assaults her. She fights back, biting his tongue and raking her nails down his face, but he punches her and drags her by the hair toward the bedroom. Her downstairs neighbor John Betz pounds on the door, and Dustin flees. John and his wife, Monica, find Arden half-conscious and call 911.

Detectives Brill and Venmar arrest Dustin at his apartment, where they discover the stolen items, surveillance photos of Arden, and a forged love inscription in one of her books. The hidden camera captures the full attack. Dustin's wealthy mother hires an expensive legal team, and two psychiatric evaluations support a plea of "irresistible impulse," a defense arguing his mental state rendered him unable to resist his actions. He receives five years in a secure psychiatric facility rather than prison. Arden is devastated but relieved she will not have to testify. Dustin, enraged by his windowless room, begins plotting revenge while performing the role of a cooperative, remorseful patient.

Over the following years, Arden experiences severe anxiety and PTSD. She locks herself in rooms, avoids leaving her apartment, and quits her bookstore job. Therapy with Dr. Wren helps, as do buying a house and adopting a black Labrador named Zorro. She continues writing and publishes more novels. As Dustin's release date nears, her anxiety returns, and she decides to move to Riverbend, Oregon, near Zoey's family, to put distance between herself and her attacker. She drives cross-country with Zorro, arriving to find Zoey has arranged for her furniture to be set up early in a farmhouse with views of the Willamette Valley. Arden tells her aunt the full truth: She cannot stay where Dustin can find her.

In Riverbend, Arden begins building a new life. At Riley's Hardware, she meets Joe Riley, the store's longtime owner, and his grandson Gideon, a former detective with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). She buys doorknobs for the entire house, all with privacy locks that allow each door to be locked from the inside. Joe insists Gideon install them, and during the work, Gideon recognizes what the locks mean: She wants places to hide. Arden also befriends her nearest neighbor, Jamie Stuart, an artist married to Nick, who owns a local bakery, and begins attending their monthly Sunday brunches.

Gideon agrees to build custom bookcases for Arden's library, and their professional relationship gradually becomes personal. He delivers bookcases, fixes a leaky pipe, and eventually kisses her, recognizing from her flash of fear that someone has hurt her. The retiring police chief asks Gideon to succeed him, and Joe reinforces the decision by firing Gideon from the hardware store. Gideon accepts.

Detective Brill calls Arden to inform her that Dustin has been granted compassionate early release because his father is dying of cancer, cutting five months from his sentence. Arden tells Gideon the full story of her attack for the first time. He contacts Brill to request the case file and posts Dustin's photo at the station. Investigating independently, he locates two other women Dustin stalked or assaulted, both redheads, establishing a pattern. He shares these findings with Arden, and they agree Dustin will hurt someone else.

Dustin secures ownership of a family property called The Retreat in Washington State's Olympic Mountains from his dying father. Using his mother's resources, he acquires false identification and a gun. He drugs his mother Theresa's tea with sleeping pills and strangles her. He steals her car, fabricates a text from her phone to her husband to buy time, and flees west, switching license plates along the way. In a rented cabin in Colorado, he rapes and murders Hailey Parkinson, a twenty-year-old college student who stops to ask for directions. The killing compromises his false identity, forcing him to acquire new documents.

Gideon and Arden's relationship deepens through the holidays. His parents, film director Liam Riley and actress Scarlett Dash, arrive as a surprise for Christmas Eve. Arden hosts her first Christmas dinner; Uncle Doug gives her a compact multi-tool as a Christmas gift, urging her to keep it in her pocket since he is no longer close by. The couple becomes engaged: Gideon gives her his grandmother Colleen's vintage ring, and she gives him a house key on a key ring shaped like a chief-of-police badge. They plan a July wedding with Jamie coordinating, Nick baking the cake, and Joe building an arbor.

Dustin arrives in Riverbend with his car repainted and his hair dyed, checking into a hotel under a false identity. Gideon systematically checks local hotels, and a bellman's description triggers recognition, but Dustin has already left. Dustin ambushes Arden in her driveway, punches her unconscious, and locks her in the trunk of his car. Jamie, arriving for a visit, witnesses the abduction. Dustin fires at him twice, then speeds away. Jamie calls Gideon, who activates pursuit and coordinates roadblocks with state police and Detectives Brill and Venmar, who are already traveling south to join the search.

Arden regains consciousness in the trunk and fights through panic by hearing Gideon's voice in her mind, reminding her she is a survivor, not a victim. Using the multi-tool her uncle gave her for Christmas, she saws through the trunk lining, reaches the spare tire compartment, and retrieves a lug wrench. When Dustin pulls over, she opens the trunk's interior latch, climbs out, and swings the wrench into his head, breaking his jaw and nose and rupturing his eardrum. He collapses.

Gideon arrives moments later, cuffs Dustin, and secures his weapons. At the hospital, he baits Dustin into a recorded confession to all three crimes: Dustin admits to killing his mother, raping and killing Hailey, and planning to beat and dominate Arden, before finally demanding a lawyer. Arden reunites with Jamie, Zoey, and Nick at home. When Gideon returns after one a.m. and confirms the confession, the couple looks ahead to their July wedding, a honeymoon in Ireland, and the life they are building together in a home where Arden finally feels safe.
