Two months after her husband Richard Foxworth supposedly dies at sea, twenty-four-year-old Shelby Foxworth sits in his home office in their Villanova, Pennsylvania, mansion and discovers that her entire marriage was built on lies. Lawyers and accountants reveal that the house is mortgaged, the cars are leased, and Shelby owes creditors and the government roughly three million dollars. Richard's personal papers show he secretly had a vasectomy shortly after their daughter Callie's birth, and hotel receipts confirm he had affairs. Shelby also finds a key hidden in the lining of his favorite leather jacket.

She begins selling everything: designer suits, sports equipment, jewelry. Her engagement ring turns out to be a lab-created diamond, and most of her other pieces are fake. After searching banks for weeks, Shelby locates a safe-deposit box belonging to Richard. Inside she finds $250,000 in cash, a .32 semiautomatic handgun, and multiple sets of fake identification bearing his photograph under different names, including David Allen Matherson. A phone call from someone asking for Matherson confirms the alias is real.

A private investigator named Ted Privet enters Shelby's home by posing as a book dealer and reveals that the man she knew as Richard was involved in fraud and a twenty-eight-million-dollar jewelry heist in Miami. Shelby insists she knows nothing and orders him out. When she notices his car near her neighborhood repeatedly, she realizes he is following her.

With the house nearly empty, Shelby buys a secondhand minivan and drives south with Callie to Rendezvous Ridge, a small mountain town in Tennessee where she grew up. Privet follows at a distance.

The extended Pomeroy and Donahue clan greets them with a barbecue and bluegrass music. Her mother, Ada Mae, fusses over Shelby's thinness, while her father, Clayton, a country doctor, prescribes food and rest. Her grandmother Viola, who built the town's salon and day spa from nothing, offers steady support. Her brother Forrest, a deputy sheriff, confronts her privately about her years away, and they begin to reconcile when Shelby admits Richard was deeply wrong for her. During a facial at Viola's salon, Shelby confides the full truth: the vasectomy, the affairs, the fake jewelry, the debt, and the safe-deposit box.

Shelby reconnects with her childhood best friend, Emma Kate Addison, who has moved back to the Ridge with her boyfriend, Matt Baker. Emma Kate is hurt that Shelby missed her grandfather's funeral. Shelby admits Richard forbade it and she lacked the courage to defy him. Emma Kate recognizes this as emotional abuse and begins to forgive her.

Shelby meets Matt's business partner, Griffin Lott, who is restoring an old house outside town. Griff is immediately drawn to Shelby, and Callie adores him on sight. Shelby secures two jobs: singing on Friday nights at Bootlegger's Bar and Grill, managed by her old classmate Tansy Johnson, and working part-time at Viola's salon. She tells Forrest everything about the safe-deposit box and Privet. Forrest confronts the investigator and orders him to leave, and that evening Shelby discloses the full truth to her family, who rally around her.

On the morning of her debut performance, a woman calling herself Natalie Sinclair claims to be the legal wife of Jake Brimley, yet another of Richard's aliases, meaning Shelby was never legally married. Natalie reveals that she, Richard, and an associate she calls Mickey O'Hara stole nearly thirty million dollars in jewelry and rare stamps from a wealthy Miami widow. Richard double-crossed his partners: Natalie served four years in prison while her associate received twenty-five years. She demands half the stolen property; Shelby insists she has nothing. That night, Shelby performs to a packed house. After her set, Forrest and Griff find Natalie shot dead in her rental car.

The investigation identifies the victim as Melinda Warren. Forrest learns that Mickey O'Hara is actually James Harlow, who escaped from prison around Christmas, making him the prime suspect. The sale of Shelby's Philadelphia house closes, lifting her largest financial burden. Her relationship with Griff deepens: He kisses her for the first time after a celebratory dinner, and they later spend the night together at his restored house.

Driving home afterward, Griff is deliberately run off the road by a truck. Forrest arrests Arlo Kattery, who confesses that Melody Bunker, Shelby's high school rival, paid him to frighten Shelby; Griff was targeted because Arlo could not reach her. Shelby confronts Melody and punches her.

Someone breaks into Griff's house and downloads his computer files, and a man matching Harlow's description pickpockets Shelby's keys and uses them to copy data from her laptop at her parents' house. Forrest concludes Harlow is searching for evidence about the stolen millions. FBI agents interview Shelby, revealing that items she unknowingly sold from Richard's possessions were stolen during Atlanta burglaries in which a woman died. She cooperates fully. Separately, Privet is found murdered in his Miami office, shot with the same gun used on Warren.

Shelby continues rebuilding. Matt proposes to Emma Kate, and Shelby is named maid of honor. She takes online decorating classes and plans an interior design business. Griff tells her he loves her. She pulls back briefly, afraid of repeating past mistakes, but they reconcile.

On the night of Emma Kate's engagement party, Shelby drives home alone to retrieve Callie's forgotten stuffed dog and finds Richard waiting in her bedroom, alive and armed. He reveals he faked his death using scuba gear and had planned to kill Shelby and Callie on the boat by throwing Callie overboard, knowing Shelby would jump after her, but the plan failed when Callie fell ill. Behind a framed photograph of Shelby and Callie that he knew she would never discard, he hid a safe-deposit box key accessing a local bank where the stolen Miami jewelry and stamps are stored. He forces Shelby at gunpoint to drive to a remote cabin, threatening Callie's life. At the cabin, Harlow lies bleeding, shot by Richard. Richard confirms he killed Warren and expresses contempt for Shelby, declaring he kept her only as a useful disguise.

Throughout the ordeal, Shelby secretly sends fragmented text messages to Griff with the vehicle description, license plate, and directional clues. When Richard turns away, she throws a bucket of bleach in his face. He recovers and grabs her, but Harlow bursts through a door and tackles him. The gun falls free, and Shelby seizes it. When Richard lunges at her, sneering that she lacks the spine to shoot, she fires three times.

Griff and Forrest arrive moments later, having tracked her texts. Both Richard and Harlow survive. Richard faces life in prison. Using the key from the photo frame, police recover the stolen property from the local bank.

Forrest tells Shelby she is entitled to a ten-percent finder's fee on the recovered property, approximately two million dollars, enough to clear all remaining debt. Griff shows her the bedroom he secretly built for Callie at his house, complete with green walls and a Shrek soap dish, and tells her he wants Shelby and Callie to be his. Shelby tells him she loves him, agrees to move in the next day, and says she wants more children and a life built together. They walk outside to where Callie plays with Griff's puppy, Snickers, in a whirl of bubbles, and Shelby reflects that she has finally found her way home.
