Chapter 19 Summary

Tuesday morning passes without the expected telegram from Leo’s mother. Relieved that Mrs. Maudsley is bedridden because he dreads having to inform her of his plan to leave, Leo concludes his letter was delayed. He spends the day with Marcus, who gossips about the forthcoming ball and explains that Marian’s engagement to Lord Trimingham will be allowed to spread rather than be formally announced. Marcus teases Leo about being young and naive, then reveals the birthday secret: Marian intends to ride in on a green bicycle as Leo’s present. The image briefly revives his feeling for her, but he pushes it aside. Later, a telegraph boy appears on the drive; Leo reaches for the wire, certain it is from his mother, but Marcus opens it—it is only Marian, announcing she will return Wednesday evening.


Wednesday brings no letter. After reading Punch and being baffled when Lord Trimingham laughs at anti-British war satire, Leo decides it is likely his last full day and resolves to say goodbye to Ted. He lies to Marcus about a swimming lesson and finds Ted harvesting the wheat field. Ted looks visibly worn and aged.
