This merger allowed them to apply their expertise in selling addictive products to the food market.
According to Fung, these corporations systematically transferred the “Big Tobacco ‘How to Sell an Addiction’ playbook” (126) to ultra-processed foods (UPFs). This strategy included marketing directly to children using cartoons, engineering products with a “bliss point” of sugar, fat, and salt to maximize their rewarding effect, and funding biased scientific research to downplay the harms of their products. This history explains why UPFs are not just convenient but are often functionally addictive.
By framing these companies as a collective actor, Fung argues that hedonic hunger is a manufactured crisis. He suggests that these corporations deliberately created products that exploit the brain’s reward systems for profit, making individual willpower an inadequate defense against addiction.
