The Monday after Thanksgiving, Virginia phones the Lorettes and learns their art contact needs more time to assess the watercolor painting. Clara’s good mood is broken when her friend, Betsy, passes through the terminal and reacts with theatrical pity to Virginia’s circumstances, calling Grand Central a filthy and pest-ridden place. Totto overhears the conversation and confronts Betsy directly, defending the terminal. Winston de-escalates by introducing Virginia to Betsy as the new chief information officer, a lie that impresses Betsy. She promises to spread the word to their old social circle before leaving. Totto afterward clarifies to Virginia that he spoke up to defend the terminal’s reputation.
The next weekend, Virginia tours Ruby through the terminal. Ruby photographs both the grandeur and the decay of the building, and persuades several workers to sit for portraits. When the developed prints impress everyone that evening, Xavier proposes holding an exhibition there at the Carlyle Hotel. Finn immediately arranges it for after the holidays.
Virginia finds it difficult reach the Lorettes until the morning of Ruby’s exhibit. Mrs. Lorette answers Virginia but is evasive, citing her husband’s declining health, and stalls on providing Virginia with the art expert’s contact information. Ruby arrives shortly after with Virginia’s mail, which contains another threatening note.
