Plot Summary

Sasha Cruz is a 32-year-old casting director in Brooklyn who has spent the past year in near-total isolation. In 2022, after winning an Emmy for casting an HBO series, she was stalked by a rejected actor who terrorized her with threatening letters, surveillance, and a brick through her window. She hired Wesley Dane, a young detective at Dane & Son, his father's agency. During the case, Sasha stayed on the couch in Wes's father's empty office, too afraid to go home. They grew close through late-night conversations, and Wes tossed her a Dane & Son pencil she caught and kept. One night, after a violent nightmare, she begged Wes to hold her, and in a state of raw fear she climaxed against his thigh while he told her she was safe. The next morning he was gone, leaving only a note that the stalker had been arrested. They did not speak again for four years. The ordeal left Sasha with anxiety and a scar on her wrist, now hidden under a gold cuff bracelet. Her sabbatical devolved into severe depression and near-total isolation until hospitalization for aspiration pneumonia frightened her into rejoining the world.

When Seraphina, a global beauty company, hires her to cast a lipstick commercial, the job requires a trip to Paris. At the airport, a manicurist named Maxi reads Sasha's palm and predicts a chance meeting that will end in love. On the flight, a last-minute passenger takes the seat beside hers: a man with dark hair, pale green eyes, and a slight Italian accent she dubs "Seat F." Over six hours of wine-fueled conversation, they bond over absent parents, cultural estrangement, and loneliness. He tells her he works as a luxury hotel inspector and lives in SoHo half the year. He writes the Italian phrase in bocca al lupo ("stay safe in the mouth of the wolf") on a napkin as a talisman. They hold hands across the aisle until landing, but the chaos of Paris's airport separates them before they can exchange names.

Still intoxicated, Sasha emails her Seraphina HR contact to ask if Seat F works for the company and accidentally copies the entire global staff. The candid, misspelled email goes viral. Back in Brooklyn, her best friend Destiny Morgan, a matchmaker, urges her to broaden her options, but Sasha is fixated. She tracks Wes to a weekend food market where he now runs Natural Born Griller, a barbecue food truck. He reacts with shock and refuses her request. The next day, however, he meets her at the Brooklyn Central Library and explains that her case was his last and the reason he quit detective work. He takes Prozac and credits his new career with healing his mental health. Sasha pleads that finding Seat F represents proof she is not broken. Wes agrees, calling it "full circle," and sets strict rules: He works alone, and they keep things professional.

The investigation begins. Sasha and Wes stake out the Film Forum theater, which Seat F said he visits every Friday, but he does not appear. Their late-night phone calls become a ritual, each more intimate than the last. Wes nudges Sasha to recall details from the flight: She told Seat F she worked for Seraphina and liked Fenty eyeshadow palettes. At the flagship Seraphina store, Wes goes undercover and learns that a man matching Seat F's description has been buying Fenty palettes at multiple locations, telling employees he is looking for a woman he met on a plane. Seat F is searching for her, too.

Wes befriends Roslyn, a trans woman recently fired from USFlight Airlines due to discrimination. In exchange for connecting her with his journalist ex-girlfriend Imani McIntyre for an exposé, Roslyn accesses the flight manifest. The passenger in seat 1F is Teo D. Scera, a dual US-Italian citizen living in SoHo. Imani, who lives on the same block, confirms Teo has mentioned meeting a woman on a flight, validating Sasha's connection. Meanwhile, Sasha and Wes's attraction grows undeniable. When Wes attends a park bench dedication honoring his late father, Sasha accompanies him. His mother publicly belittles Wes, declaring his father "died disappointed" in him. Sasha defends Wes and kisses him on the cheek in front of his family.

Sasha invites Wes to her apartment to return a journal she found in her bag. After a heated argument about whether she is truly serious about finding Seat F, Wes confesses that if he had been the man on that flight, she would have left knowing far more than his name. They have sex on her kitchen island. Afterward, he hands her Teo's name on a slip of paper and leaves. Their physical relationship continues at Wes's apartment, where he makes a raw confession: He is not wealthy, not international, not a fantasy. He tells Sasha that delivering Teo at an upcoming charity gala will be his final act on the case.

Wes's investigation uncovers troubling signs. Teo's bank records list five aliases. One, Sam Canter, heads a charity called Two Tunics hosting a gala at the Pierre Hotel. Wes and Sasha attend together. They share an intimate slow dance before separating to search for Teo. In the ladies' lounge, Sasha confesses to a stranger that she is in love with her associate, meaning Wes. Her malfunctioning earpiece transmits the words; Wes hears "I'm in love with him" and assumes she means Teo.

Devastated, Wes drinks heavily. Sasha and Teo find each other by chance and prepare to leave together. Teo offers to drive them home. In the car, separated by a partition, Wes eavesdrops with a listening device and unscrambles Teo's aliases: Mo Hanly is "Holy Man," AJ Lhuellah is "Hallelujah," Ted Nanoi is "Anointed," Sam Canter is "Sacrament." Even "Teo D. Scera" rearranges to sacerdote, Italian for "priest." Wes connects these to Imani's in-progress exposé about clergymen who embezzle from European churches, assume new identities, and live extravagantly. He texts Sasha to exit the car before Teo learns where she lives.

Outside the Brooklyn library, Wes reveals the truth. Furious, Sasha accuses him of jealousy. Their argument escalates into mutual confessions: Wes admits that in 2022, he set up the stalker, Jones Wright, by bringing the brick himself and then breaking Wright's jaw. This act cost Wes his career and his father's respect. He tells Sasha, "There are no bounds to what I'd do for you," and walks home.

Sasha calls Teo the next morning. He confirms he is a grifting priest and tells her she led herself on. She hangs up and blocks his number, recognizing she sought salvation in a stranger when her true connection was already in front of her. Emails from Seraphina employees reveal that many find their own loves while searching for Seat F. Maxi also writes to correct her palm reading: The chain of events leading to love is meant for other people, not Sasha herself.

At her live casting audition, Sasha delivers a personal speech about her transformation, declaring that her anxiety does not define her. A latecomer is called: Dean W. Seely, an anagram of Wesley Dane. Wes walks onto the set and tells her he loves her and has since 2022. He notices the chewed Dane & Son pencil on her desk, the talisman she has carried for four years. Sasha corrects his misunderstanding: The words he overheard at the gala were about him, not Teo. He says, "Thank fucking God. Get over here." She flies into his arms. Maxi's prediction is right after all: The chance meeting with Seat F sets off a chain of events that brings love to many, and ultimately leads Sasha to her own.
