Sent to the mission school in Siriana by his father, he gains a Western education while retaining a deep connection to his ancestral lands. He firmly believes that education is the ultimate tool for his people's liberation and unity, though this single-minded focus often blinds him to deeper political realities.

Nyambura is the daughter of Joshua, a zealous Christian convert living in the village of Makuyu. Unlike her fiercely rebellious sister, Nyambura is outwardly obedient to her father's strict religious rules, though she secretly harbors a deep spiritual connection to the natural surroundings and the river Honia. She experiences acute loneliness and searches for a faith that offers love and unity rather than fear and division.

Chege is a revered elder and seer in the traditional Gikuyu village of Kameno. Deeply knowledgeable about the land and the hidden histories of the tribe, he stands somewhat detached from the rest of the villagers. He carries the heavy burden of an ancient prophecy and orchestrates his son Waiyaki's path, hoping to prepare him to save their people from cultural destruction.

Joshua is an early Gikuyu convert to Christianity who becomes a fiercely dedicated preacher in Makuyu. Viewing his own people's traditions as ignorant and sinful, he rules his household with an iron fist and refuses to compromise on his strict religious tenets. He envisions building a "New Jerusalem" and acts as a rigid, uncompromising force against the traditional ways of the neighboring village, Kameno.

Muthoni is Joshua's courageous and stubborn daughter who feels unfulfilled by her father's strict Christianity. She boldly decides to participate in the traditional Gikuyu circumcision ritual to become a "real woman" and connect with the ways of her ancestors. Her rebellion serves as a catalyst for escalating tensions between the Christian converts and the traditionalists of the ridges.

Kabonyi is a prominent Gikuyu elder who initially converts to Christianity but later aggressively rejects it to champion traditional purity. He leads a breakaway political faction called the Kiama, fiercely opposing both the white settlers and the Christian converts. Jealous of Waiyaki's rising influence as a leader, Kabonyi continually attempts to undermine the younger man's authority.

Kamau is the son of Kabonyi and grows up alongside Waiyaki and Kinuthia. He becomes a teacher in the independent Gikuyu schools but harbors a deep-seated resentment toward Waiyaki. His animosity is fueled both by his father's political grievances and his own unrequited romantic feelings for Nyambura.

Kinuthia is a loyal, fatherless young man from a village beyond the ridges who becomes one of Waiyaki's most trusted friends and fellow teachers. While he respects the radical political actions of the Kiama, he remains devoted to Waiyaki's vision of education and frequently warns him of the mounting dangers posed by Kabonyi's faction.

Miriamu is Joshua's wife and the mother of Nyambura and Muthoni. She is a peace-loving woman who has learned to submit to her husband's overbearing Christian authority to keep the peace in their home. Despite her outward compliance, she retains a quiet, internal connection to her Gikuyu roots and sympathizes with her daughters' struggles.

Livingstone is a white European missionary who runs the school and church in Siriana. After spending decades in Kenya, he has learned the local language and believes he is saving the souls of the Gikuyu people. He views traditional African customs, particularly circumcision rituals, with extreme disgust and takes drastic measures to eradicate them from his congregation.
