Part 5: “Monster Con”

Part 5, Chapter 52 Summary

Kierse awakens in Lorcan’s bed, sore and weak. He explains that during their triskel training, Ethan accidentally drained her magic, causing her to collapse. Lorcan carried her to his room to recover and refused to move her, keeping Graves waiting outside Druid territory. He suggests that if they were magically bound as soulmates, he could easily replenish her power. Kierse reveals that she has been practicing how to consciously control her absorption ability. She learns that Gen and Ethan are both safe but exhausted. When Graves calls her, Kierse tells him where she is and agrees to meet him, leaving Lorcan’s apartment despite his protests that she isn’t well enough to travel.

Part 5, Chapter 53 Summary

Graves picks Kierse up and is furious that she smells like Lorcan. Back at the brownstone, he carries her to his bedroom and puts her to bed. When Kierse asks him to stop reading her, he does. To explain his possessiveness, he tells her about his first love, Lorcan’s sister Emilie, who was fated to be with a Druid named Tadhg. Graves and Emilie were in love and petitioned to be married, but they were denied because of the soulmate bond. He compares that hopeless situation to his current one with Kierse and Lorcan. Kierse reassures him that their circumstances are different because they have the freedom to choose. Graves tells her that she’s his choice.

Part 5, Chapter 54 Summary

Days later, Kierse finishes her work on the box that was used as a decoy for the real cauldron. She opens it to find it empty, sensing only the Curator’s lingering magical signature. Walter interrupts with bad news for the upcoming heist: A new manual security switch has been installed for the cauldron, and Schwartz has been removed from the security team. Gen volunteers to infiltrate the hotel and disable the system herself. Walter also reveals that the time window for the theft is only four minutes and 34 seconds, meaning that Kierse must perform the swap herself instead of acting as a distraction. Graves and Kierse agree to the new plan even though this means that she’ll miss a chance to meet the Curator. Before the heist, Kierse and Graves attempt more memory work. She recalls her parents in Graves’s library and her father offering his prized hunting knife in exchange for her safety. The memory is too painful, and Graves makes the call to stop their memory work until after the mission is complete.

Part 5, Chapter 55 Summary

While attempting to recharge her magic, Kierse discovers a Men of Valor logo spray-painted where a subway troll used to guard, confirming that the anti-human monster group is active. She then goes to Brooklyn to visit Ethan, who shows her a new sacred tree that grew from the magic they shared during their triskel training. Kierse confides in him about her memory block and the psychiatrist’s theory that her mind is shielding her from the trauma of her parents’ deaths. During their conversation, Kierse senses Lorcan’s magical presence return to the compound through their soulmate bond and decides to confront him.

Part 5, Chapter 56 Summary

Kierse finds Lorcan on the Oak Throne. He magically creates two golden crowns, places one on her head, and calls her his queen. He informs her that the Men of Valor orchestrated a city-wide troll revolt that day and are consolidating their power. He also confirms that he knows about the cauldron heist but promises not to interfere. He then kisses her, and Kierse feels their soulmate bond trying to initiate a binding even though she hasn’t agreed to perform the formal ceremony. Using a mental technique that Graves taught her, she resists the magic and breaks away. As she leaves, Lorcan tells her that Graves killed Emilie.

Part 5, Chapter 57 Summary

Kierse returns to the brownstone for the final heist meeting and discovers an unexpected guest, Lyra. She has figured out their plan to steal the cauldron and demands to be included. Graves agrees, making her part of the team. The group also learns that two seats are open at an upcoming convocation, and Nate agrees to put himself forward for one to counter the Men of Valor. The meeting is abruptly interrupted by the unannounced arrival of Graves’s former mentor, Kingston.

Part 5, Chapter 58 Summary

Graves reluctantly allows Kingston to stay for the Monster Conference. Once Kingston is settled, Graves confronts Kierse about her visit with Lorcan. She confesses that Lorcan kissed her and that she had to magically resist an impromptu soulmate binding. She then tells Graves that Lorcan accused him of killing Emilie. Graves admits that this is true. At Emilie’s request, he tried to remove her memories of the bond and then kept pushing with his power even when the magic began to go awry. He admits that he’d decided that he would rather she be dead than be with someone else. Enraged by the memory, Graves grabs a gun to kill Lorcan. Kierse blocks his path, confesses that she loves him, and kisses him.

Part 5, Chapter 59 Summary

While they kiss, Kierse lets her magical defenses down, allowing Graves to see her memories and feel the depth of her love for him. Graves tells her that a weapon is only as powerful as its weakness and that she is his, making her the most powerful thing in the world. They have sex in his office and then his bedroom. Afterward, Graves tells Kierse that he loves her, too.

Part 5, Chapter 60 Summary

Graves gives Kierse her father’s hunting knife. Holding the knife gives her the strength to face her repressed memories. With Graves’s help, she breaks through the magical block and remembers the night her parents died. She witnesses them being murdered by the Fae Killer and his female companion. She also recalls her mother, Shannon, giving her the wren necklace and telling her that a wren would one day lead her home to faerie. The memory confirms that the Curator’s spell was designed to erase her past and her magic. Kierse resolves to find him and get answers.

Part 5, Chapter 61 Summary

The heist begins during the Monster Con at the Plaza Hotel. Kierse and Lyra go undercover as performers. Graves’s private chef, Isolde, delivers a cake to the venue, and Laz takes possession of it inside. A separate, smaller cake box holding the decoy is kept in cold storage for later. The event is interrupted by a speech from Amberdash, who is introduced as the new leader of the Men of Valor. Amberdash announces his candidacy for a seat at the upcoming Monster Treaty Convocation. As the speech continues, Kierse feels Lorcan arrive at the conference through their bond.

Part 5, Chapter 62 Summary

Walter activates magical wards, trapping the conference attendees in the main ballroom. Gen reports over their comms that she has disabled the security system but was badly injured by guards in the process. She then falls silent. Walter attempts to hack the Curator’s security system to move the guards but takes too long, so Kierse acts herself, incapacitating two guards to clear the path to the secure room. Inside, she swaps the real cauldron for the decoy but discovers a weight-sensitive alarm on the pedestal. Thinking quickly, she leaves a hairpin on the sensor to maintain the weight and escapes just as the security system reactivates.

Part 5, Chapter 63 Summary

Kierse exits the secure area and hands the box containing the cauldron to Laz, who’s disguised as a bellhop. As soon as the exchange is complete, Kierse is ambushed by two men. She recognizes one of them from her visit to Sansara. They use a drugged cloth to knock her unconscious, with one of her captors telling her that the Curator has been waiting for her.

Part 5, Interlude 5 Summary

Laz recalls first meeting Graves years ago in Romania on a mission for the Central Intelligence Agency, where he witnessed magic for the first time. In the present, he completes his part of the heist by loading the cauldron onto a luggage cart and bringing it to Graves, who then drives away with the prize. Shortly after he leaves, Walter reports that he has been locked out of the hotel’s security system and that Kierse is no longer on their communications channel. The team realizes that she has been captured.

Part 5 Analysis

In Part 5, Linde uses the love triangle to explore the theme of Love as a Deliberate Choice. When Graves tells Kierse the story of his lost love, Emilie, a woman bound by fate to another, Kierse refutes the parallel to her own situation, insisting, “The only people who get to choose anything are the two people in this room” (344). This declaration argues that the strength of her connection with Graves comes from the power of free will. In contrast, her connection with Lorcan is presented as an external, magical force, an involuntary compulsion described with words like “Intense,” “Compulsive,” and “Frustrating” (361). When he kisses her, their soulmate bond attempts to initiate a binding ceremony without her consent. Conversely, her relationship with Graves is built on earned trust, mutual vulnerability, and explicit consent. When she finally confesses her feelings to him, it’s an active choice made to de-escalate a violent conflict, and their subsequent intimacy is predicated on her willingly lowering her magical defenses to let him see her memories and emotions. Graves’s own admission that a “weapon is only as powerful as its weakness, and [she is his]” (375), confirms that their love is a choice that defies fate.

Kierse’s active resistance to the soulmate binding with Lorcan is a key moment that emphasizes the theme of The Sacredness of Personal Autonomy. By using a mental technique that Graves taught her to break free from the magical compulsion, she demonstrates that her agency can override even the most powerful coercion. This assertion of self-governance is mirrored by other female characters in this section. When the heist plan falters, Gen volunteers for a dangerous role, refusing to be a sheltered bystander: “I am every bit a part of this as you are” (346). Similarly, Lyra refuses to be used as an unwitting pawn in the heist and infiltrates the team’s meeting to demand an active role and a share of the rewards. Each character fights against being defined or controlled by others’ plans. This series of events reinforces the idea that true power lies in the freedom to choose one’s own actions and allegiances, even at great personal risk.

Graves’s gift of Kierse’s father’s knife empowers her to finally confront her past, bringing the theme of Learning to Confront Trauma to a painful climax. Until this point, attempts to breach the magical block in her mind have been agonizing and incomplete. The knife, a tangible link to the father she can barely remember, gives her the resolve to face the trauma that her mind has shielded her from. The subsequent memory reveals her parents’ murders at the hands of the Fae Killer, showing that confronting trauma means accepting the painful nature of the healing process. The Curator’s spell was designed to sever her from her heritage, her magic, and her family. Retrieving this memory, while physically and emotionally difficult, is depicted as a necessary act of reclamation because it allows Kierse to understand the true scope of what was stolen from her.

The heist of the cauldron, a personal mission for Graves and Kierse, unfolds against a backdrop of escalating political instability that threatens the entire monster community. The sudden appearance of Amberdash as the new leader of the Men of Valor signals a significant power shift in the city’s underworld. His speech is a formal declaration of a political agenda that aims to dismantle the Monster Treaty. This development forces Graves’s team to pivot from covert operations to overt political maneuvering, with Nate reluctantly agreeing to run for a convocation seat to counter the Men of Valor’s influence. The successful theft of the cauldron, a symbol of hope and restoration, becomes a private victory achieved just as the public world is fracturing. Kierse’s subsequent capture by the Curator merges these plotlines; her personal quest for memory and the team’s mission for a magical artifact are now inextricably linked to the larger political battle for control of the city.
