Plot Summary

Jeff VanderMeer's novella follows a bioengineered creature, the Strange Bird, who is part bird, part human, and part other organisms, as she escapes a besieged laboratory and struggles to survive in a post-apocalyptic landscape dominated by warring factions and monstrous creations.

The Strange Bird emerges from an underground laboratory engulfed in conflict, her cage smashed open but her wings intact. She flies through dark corridors, evading figures shooting at one another, until she escapes into the night sky. She experiences flight for the first time, overwhelmed by the stars and then by sunrise, which she initially mistakes for a searchlight. An internal compass compels her southeast, though she does not know why. A flashback reveals the laboratory's final days: After intruders breached the facility, the scientists, cut off from supplies, slaughtered the animals they had created for food. The Strange Bird watched from a ceiling perch, radiating love for every animal but reserving none for the humans, not even for the parts of herself that are human.

Crossing the desert, she encounters wild birds that attack her, refusing to recognize her as kin because of the many non-avian elements within her. She also meets three dark-winged creatures: ancient surveillance satellites in avian form that have been circling the earth for countless years, transmitting data to a country that no longer exists. She probes their defenses and offers to set them free, but the query triggers their security protocols and they scatter, transmitting a warning that categorizes her as unstable and dangerous. Resting on a rusted ship hull buried in the sand, she discovers new capabilities flickering on inside her, as though the laboratory never finished her modifications. Microscopic bits of herself continually drift from her body, guided by the compass, each particle regenerating so it can be shed again. In her first dream, Sanji, a scientist from the lab, appears peeling an apple with a companion, a woman who once worked at the lab but left before the Strange Bird's escape.

On the fifth day, a massive storm knocks her from the sky. She wakes in a converted prison cell buried in the sand, captured by the Old Man, who introduces himself as Abidugun, a former carpenter now typing the memories of people he has known on an ancient typewriter with no ribbon. He names her Isadora, and the Strange Bird hides her intelligence, pretending to be an ordinary bird. At dusk, laboratory-modified foxes peer through the slit of her cell and communicate with her through subsonic growls and yips, sharing minds through her pulsing compass. She comes to understand them deeply, allowing them to know her mind in case she is never free.

One night, the Old Man shares preserved sardines that intoxicate them both, and the Strange Bird sees her full reflection for the first time, marveling at her iridescent feathers. When she mimics a recorded voice the Old Man plays and then involuntarily repeats phrases from the lab's final days, he becomes enraged and threatens to kill her. She begins practicing camouflage, using neurons in her feathers to match the hues of her cell, but the Old Man recognizes the trick and refuses to open the door. Instead, he drugs her food and carries her in a sack toward the city to sell her. During captivity, Sanji appears in a dream, telling the Strange Bird she must be brave and that what they have done must survive.

In the ruined city, the Strange Bird catches sight of Mord, an enormous flying bear four or five stories tall created by the Company, a collapsed biotech firm. In a crumbling courtyard, Charlie X, a small bat-faced man who inhabits the city's ruins, erupts from a hidden trapdoor and drags the Old Man underground. The Strange Bird slashes the Old Man's hand with her talons to free herself, but something in her wing bone gives way. Injured and unable to sustain flight, she flees through the ruins, but Charlie X tracks and overtakes her.

She wakes on a stone table beneath the painted cosmos of an abandoned observatory, where a glowing blue fox head mounted on the wall stares down at her. Charlie X presents her to the Magician, the ruthless woman who controls this part of the city. The Magician sends a crystalline spider through the Strange Bird's body, reading her biological signatures and probing her defenses. The Strange Bird's internal systems begin jettisoning microscopic parts of herself through cracks in the dome, a failsafe Sanji designed. In a dream, Sanji cuts the Strange Bird, who appears as an apple, into four pieces and tells her the compass is hidden at the heart of her, and she must never give it up.

The Magician operates without anesthetic, removing the Strange Bird's wings, breaking her spine, and extracting her bones while keeping her alive. She repurposes the Strange Bird's camouflage abilities, transforming her into a flat, wingless expanse of feathered skin that she will wear as an invisibility cloak. The Magician discovers and disables a secondary override but fails to detect the compass, which transforms into a beacon calling southeast. When the Magician slits Charlie X's throat as punishment, tiny mice pour out and stitch the wound shut, revealing that Charlie X is himself a bioengineered creature.

Years pass. The Strange Bird exists as a living garment draped across the Magician's back, her senses stripped, her existence reduced to the Magician's heartbeat and breath. She retreats mentally to the laboratory's artificial island, imagining conversations with Sanji. During this period, she recalls the Old Man's whispered secret: He was the jailer, not a prisoner. When civilization collapsed, he locked the prisoners in their cells to starve and killed the other guards in self-defense. The Magician uses the cloak to spy on her enemies and wage war for control of the city. As the Strange Bird's beacon weakens and she nears death, the foxes from the Old Man's prison reach out. Now free and acting as insurgents, they cannot rescue her but can track her beacon. The connection revives her.

When the Magician's war collapses, the foxes guide the Company's Mord proxies, normal-sized bears, to the Magician's position, and the bears ambush her. The Magician flees into the Company building, and the Strange Bird's consciousness fades. She wakes in a healing pool at the Balcony Cliffs, the stronghold of Rachel, a scavenger, and Wick, a biotech maker. Wick examines her and identifies her original purpose: a dispersal system for genetic material designed to reseed the world with microscopic organisms as she flew. He strips away the Magician's conditioning and fashions four finch-sized birds from the salvageable material, each identical, each holding every memory. Rachel and Wick toss them into the sky.

Three follow the compass southeast while the fourth heads north. Over the following days, an old missile system destroys one bird, and a falcon kills another. The last Strange Bird flies on alone. On the 10th day, the desert ends and the ocean appears. She follows the coastline south to a ruined laboratory perched on a cliff edge, with an apple tree beside it. The compass leads her past the building to a cave behind a waterfall, where she finds a large, iridescent bird of many colors: a mirror image of her former self. The compass stops.

The larger bird carries a recorded message from Sanji's partner, the woman from the first dream, expressing grief that their plans failed. The Strange Bird carries Sanji's reply encoded within her: that Sanji could not be with her love but could watch over her all her days. The compass is ultimately a means of delivering this final communication between two people separated by catastrophe. The Strange Bird sees the future: foraging, nesting against the cliffs, living a long life by the sea. She sings for joy, not because she has not suffered, but because she is finally free.
