Under Your Scars

In Under Your Scars, Anderson suggests that untreated trauma can manifest as a cycle of extreme violence that, far from offering healing or justice, ultimately consumes the perpetrator. The novel traces this destructive path through its two central male characters, Christian Reeves and Elliot Young, both of whom are haunted by the murders of their families. Their parallel descents into vigilantism and revenge demonstrate that violence is a maladaptive and self-perpetuating response to psychological pain. Rather than restoring control, their actions only create more chaos, culminating in the destruction of their own lives and of those they claim to love.

Christian’s violent alter ego, the Silencer, is a direct product of his unresolved childhood trauma. His vigilantism arises from an “unnatural thirst for violence” rather than a calculated crusade for justice, born specifically from the night he watched his parents die (134). This compulsion is explicitly linked to his deepest despair; Christian confesses to Elena that the Silencer persona emerged on the night he planned to die by suicide, framing his turn to murder her assailants as the only alternative to self-destruction. In that moment of mental crisis, he heard Elena scream for help and channeled his agony outward, killing her attackers.
