Plot Summary

In the kingdom of Hallandren, a tropical nation ruled by living gods called the Returned, magic derives from BioChromatic Breath, a life force every person possesses. Breath can be transferred between individuals, and those who accumulate enough can animate objects through a process called Awakening. The Returned are people who died and came back to life with a single powerful divine Breath; they are worshipped as gods and sustained by weekly offerings of Breath. Atop this theocracy sits the God King, Susebron, who holds over 50,000 Breaths passed down across generations.

The novel opens as Vasher, a mysterious Awakener carrying Nightblood, a sentient black sword that compels those nearby to draw it, deliberately gets himself thrown into the God King's dungeons to acquire Breaths from a dying rebel. With his power restored, he escapes, his motives unclear.

In the mountain kingdom of Idris, whose people worship the god Austre and reject BioChromatic practices, King Dedelin faces a crisis. A 20-year-old treaty requires him to send a daughter to marry Susebron. His eldest, Vivenna, has trained her entire life for this role, but Dedelin believes war is inevitable and sends his youngest daughter, Siri, instead. Siri, a spirited 17-year-old always considered the redundant youngest child, is stunned. Vivenna, left purposeless, secretly plans to travel to Hallandren and rescue her sister.

Siri arrives in T'Telir, Hallandren's capital, overwhelmed by its scale and the presence of 40,000 grey-skinned Lifeless soldiers, reanimated corpses that serve as the kingdom's army. Inside the God King's palace, the steward Bluefingers, a man from the subjugated Pahn Kahl people, warns her she must never address Susebron directly or touch him uninvited. Each night she is sent to his bedchamber, where she undresses and kneels on the stone floor while the God King watches silently without approaching.

Meanwhile, Lightsong the Bold, one of roughly 25 Returned gods in the Court of Gods, the walled district of palaces where the deities reside, cultivates laziness while privately doubting his own divinity. His high priest, Llarimar, records his dreams as prophecy, but recurring visions of T'Telir in flames trouble Lightsong. The goddess Blushweaver warns that court factions are pushing toward war with Idris and urges him to help secure the Lifeless armies. Lightsong reluctantly agrees.

Vivenna arrives in T'Telir with Parlin, a childhood friend and the son of her father's general. She seeks out her father's chief spy, Lemex, but finds him dying. Two mercenaries, the witty swordsman Denth and the easygoing Tonk Fah, claim to work for Lemex. In his final moments, Lemex involuntarily transfers hundreds of illegally acquired Breaths to Vivenna. From her father's letters, she learns he authorized sabotage of Hallandren's war preparations. Vivenna resolves to continue the mission, hiring Denth's team, which includes Jewels, who tends a Lifeless soldier named Clod.

After a week of silence, Siri demands the God King respond to her. When he shows no anger, she begins sleeping in the bed and faking sounds of intimacy to satisfy the priests listening through the walls. One night Susebron approaches with a children's storybook and opens his mouth, revealing that his tongue has been cut out. The priests removed it to prevent him from using his enormous Breath for Awakening. Susebron is not a tyrant but a prisoner. Siri begins teaching him to read and write, and they communicate secretly through writing.

Vivenna's operations with Denth escalate. She displays her Royal Locks, the Idrian royal family's hereditary color-changing hair, to rally Idrian dissidents. The team raids supplies, steals documents, and forges letters to discredit pro-war priests. Denth warns Vivenna about Vasher, a dangerous former associate who killed their fourth member, Arsteel.

Lightsong investigates a break-in at a goddess's palace, discovering hidden tunnels beneath the Court of Gods. Blushweaver secures Lifeless Commands, the security phrases that grant control of the armies, from other gods. Lightsong eventually commands 20,000 soldiers and begins taking his responsibilities seriously.

Siri and Susebron's nightly conversations deepen into love. She learns that every previous God King died shortly after producing an heir and theorizes the priests orchestrate these deaths to transfer the Breath treasury to a new Returned infant. Despite the danger, they consummate their marriage.

During a meeting in the Idrian slums, Lifeless soldiers attack, killing indiscriminately. That night, Vasher captures Vivenna and forces her to touch Nightblood. She escapes by Awakening her bonds and flees to Denth's safe house, where she discovers Parlin's tortured corpse. Denth and his team were never her employees but were hired to manipulate her into starting the very war she thought she was preventing. Her displays of the Royal Locks, her raids, and her meetings with dissidents all convinced Hallandren that Idrian agents were already attacking.

Vivenna escapes using Clod's security phrase against Denth, then transfers all her Breath into her shawl to hide her aura, becoming a Drab, a person without Breath. Over weeks on the streets she deteriorates, contracting disease and enduring violence. Vasher eventually rescues her and nurses her back to health. He explains what her sabotage truly accomplished and enlists her help convincing Idrian workers not to riot. Together they rescue the kidnapped daughter of a priest named Nanrovah, whose opposition to war had been silenced by the abduction.

At the climactic Court Assembly, the formal session where the gods debate and vote, nearly all gods vote for war. Lightsong refuses to cast his vote, knowing his control of the armies gives him effective veto power. Siri, ready to expose the priests by having Susebron reveal his missing tongue, is intercepted and confined under the pretense that she is pregnant.

The true enemy reveals itself. Bluefingers has spent years positioning Pahn Kahl agents throughout the palace. His goal is Pahn Kahl independence, achievable only if Hallandren and Idris destroy each other. His scribes obtain Lifeless security phrases and dispatch 40,000 soldiers toward Idris. Vasher infiltrates the palace but is ambushed by Denth and captured. Bluefingers seizes the God King, murders Blushweaver before Lightsong's eyes, and forces Lightsong to reveal his phrase.

In his cell, Lightsong relives his death: He was a scribe named Stennimar, Llarimar's brother, who drowned saving his niece from a storm. He Returned because he foresaw war and chose to come back to prevent it. As the conspirators prepare to execute Susebron, Lightsong reaches through the bars and gives the God King his divine Breath, healing Susebron and regrowing his tongue at the cost of his own life.

Vivenna reaches the palace and finds Vasher losing his duel against Denth. She gives Vasher all her Breath to strengthen him for the fight. Vasher forces 50 Breaths into Denth, causing a momentary lapse, and slashes his throat. Susebron, his voice restored, Awakens every piece of cloth in the palace, creating a churning mass of animated fabric that destroys the conspirators' Lifeless and reaches Siri moments before Bluefingers can kill her.

The Lifeless army still marches toward Idris, and the scribes who held the security phrases have killed themselves. Vasher reveals his true identity: He is both Kalad the Usurper and Peacegiver the Blessed, a Returned who has lived over 300 years. The D'Denir statues scattered throughout T'Telir are his legendary Phantoms, Lifeless made from human bones encased in stone. He gives Susebron their security phrase, and a thousand stone soldiers charge from the city to intercept the rogue army.

Vivenna reunites briefly with Siri, finding her sister transformed and in love with a God King who now speaks with warmth. Rather than return to Idris, Vivenna leaves with Vasher, declaring that Princess Vivenna died on the streets of T'Telir. Vasher reveals his original Returned name was Warbreaker the Peaceful and tells her they are heading to confront another of the Five Scholars, the legendary circle of master Awakeners, who has resurfaced with dangerous new power. Together they walk into an uncertain future.
