She requests books on mimicry and camouflage while stubbornly withholding details about her experiences in the pristine wilderness. Though she looks identical to the original biologist, she insists on her new name and seeks true freedom.

Grace is the cynical, combative assistant director of the Southern Reach who has worked at the facility for nearly thirty years. Resentful that an outsider was chosen as director over her, she weaponizes bureaucratic procedures and classified files to block Control's efforts. She remains fiercely dedicated to the legacy of her missing predecessor, Cynthia. Outside the office, she balances her intense career with a complex history involving a former husband, twin sons, and a female partner.

Jackie is Control's emotionally distant mother and a powerful figure within Central command. Operating on a nomadic, highly classified schedule, she treats her son with guarded professionalism rather than maternal warmth. She views his current assignment as his final opportunity to prove his capability, managing him more like an asset than a family member.

Cynthia is the prior director of the Southern Reach who vanished during the twelfth expedition. A former psychologist, she possessed a highly secretive and unorthodox management style. She left behind a confusing trail of handwritten notes, encrypted files, and an immortal plant that her successor must decipher. Many at the facility, particularly Grace, believe she is still alive inside Area X.

Whitby is an eccentric, anxious scientist who serves as a jack-of-all-trades at the facility. He appears much older than his actual age and often proposes unconventional hypotheses about Area X, including the idea that the anomaly must be studied holistically as a "terroir" rather than through isolated samples. He exhibits signs of severe psychological strain from his extended proximity to the anomalous data.
