The decision to adopt the name “Cricket” is his first act of self-definition, a way to distinguish himself from his mother’s abusive boyfriend, Robert, and to claim an identity rooted in Silas’s affectionate and expansive view of him. Initially, Cricket’s artistic practice is a private refuge, a way to create “order on your paper” (11) to counteract the chaos of his home life.
