Part 5, Chapter 31 Summary

Years pass. From his home in the Turkish coastal town of Aliaga, Cricket speaks on the phone with Olympia. Cricket now works as a shipbreaker, scavenging valuables from decommissioned cruise ships. A year prior, an explosion at work left him with third-degree burns on his back. Olympia, who remains in the United States, senses from his voice that he is unwell, though he only admits to being tired and drinking.

Olympia offers condolences for his mother, who died six months earlier after a fall. Olympia then offers Cricket a job in Philadelphia building canvases for an artist, with a salary of $7,500 a month plus free housing. Sensing a desperate, pleading quality in her voice that he hasn’t heard since high school, Cricket agrees to leave Turkey and come help her.

Part 5, Chapter 32 Summary

Cricket flies to Newark, where Olympia and her driver, Hadrian, pick him up. Olympia, now thin and wearing a pink wig, explains she must immediately leave for a one-day work trip to London. The next day, Hadrian drives Cricket to a dilapidated factory that houses a polished, modern art studio.

A letter from Olympia reveals that the artist is Kyle Heaney, someone from their college days.
