Chapter 34 Summary

Six days after breaking up with Stewart, Dolly learns from Izzy that Stewart has secretly paid for the sleeping porch’s renovation as a surprise. To avoid the memories of Stewart in the house, Dolly spends the rest of the summer sleeping in her childhood bedroom. Back in her Boston apartment, she trims her hair and confesses to her friends Layla and Kim that the breakup is a “code red,” but she plans to simply get over it.

In November, the family returns to Whitfield for Thanksgiving. Dolly sees the completed sleeping porch for the first time, and its copper fasteners remind her of Stewart’s kitchen. Gus asks for permission to contact Stewart, who is a yacht club member, to sponsor him for a sailing race. Though heartbroken, Dolly agrees, certain that Stewart will respond to Gus.

During Thanksgiving, Patsy reveals she is in therapy partly because of their difficult family dynamic. She confronts Dolly, explaining that Dolly is trapped in a self-imposed “fix-it-all” role and resents Patsy. Dolly admits it is true, confessing that her need to be a caretaker began as a way to feel safe from their mother’s emotional instability before she abandoned them.

Later, Patsy mentions seeing Busy in town.
