Following a destructive football loss, Kyran spirals, linking his poor performance to his family’s recent financial collapse, which now jeopardizes his scholarship. Avi finds him in the locker room and invites him to a Halloween party hosted by their friend, Frankie. Seeking an escape, Kyran reluctantly attends and begins drinking heavily. Frankie leads Kyran to her bedroom—with Avi present but skeptical—and pitches a business proposal: for Kyran to film a video with them for her OnlyFans page. Initially disgusted, Kyran reconsiders when he learns how much money he could earn. Goaded by Avi and desperate for cash, Kyran agrees on the condition that he gets intoxicated first, then leaves the room to find more alcohol.
Nervous about filming the video, Avi prepares in Frankie’s room. Frankie establishes the ground rules, stressing that the video is strictly for money and that they must act professionally. The encounter begins with palpable tension between Avi and Kyran, who trade insults and threats while undressing. With Frankie positioned between them, their animosity escalates into a charged, competitive dynamic. The focus shifts from Frankie to the aggressive sparring between the two men, whose faces are inches apart as they argue. The confrontation becomes so intense that Avi finds himself unexpectedly aroused. The spell is broken when Frankie climaxes. Immediately afterward, a visibly flustered Kyran dresses and flees the room after demanding they never speak of it again. Avi is left stunned when he realizes Kyran ejaculated in his pants during their confrontation.
Avi reveals that the video earned each of them roughly $3,000, and that sharing it on his own OnlyFans account has rapidly grown his subscriber base. He admits with self-aware embarrassment that the attention and income have become addictive, conflicting with his anti-capitalist identity. The fan response, however, is almost entirely focused on seeing Avi and Kyran together without Frankie, with subscribers flooding his inbox willing to pay significant sums for that specific content.
Later that night, Kyran shows up unannounced, having finally acted on Avi’s earlier text asking him to come over for an important conversation. Avi discloses his OnlyFans operation, shows Kyran the volume of fan messages requesting content featuring only the two of them, and argues that a video with the two of them is the most practical way for both of them to fund their remaining time at school. Kyran initially resists but, partly influenced by alcohol and financial desperation, agrees to proceed that same night.
The two establish ground rules—equal profit splitting, strict secrecy to protect Kyran’s place on the football team and his relationship with his father, and an attempt to keep things professional. With the camera recording, Kyran agrees to begin.
Kyran uses his studies as a distraction from a traumatic past, but his focus is broken when he receives an $8,700 housing bill that his football scholarship does not cover. Desperate for money, he reflects on the videos he made with Avi. After leading his team to a major victory against Duke, Kyran is confronted on the field by Avi. To create distance, Kyran publicly kisses a cheerleader, Lexi, but ultimately decides against meeting her. Instead, compelled by financial need after reading Avi’s texts about how much money they have made, Kyran goes to Avi’s apartment to film more content.
The encounter is tense, with Kyran insisting it is purely transactional. They drink to ease their nerves, and what begins as each of them separately watching pornography and masturbating escalates into mutual masturbation. They perform oral sex on each other which culminates a powerful shared orgasm. After, Kyran impulsively kisses Avi but immediately panics. He violently rejects the moment as a meaningless act and flees the apartment.
Days after his last encounter with Kyran, Avi reflects on his newly confirmed bisexuality and his stepbrother’s conflicted behavior. Their OnlyFans account has exploded in popularity, but Kyran has been distant. Pressured by his friend Frankie, a reluctant Avi attends a party in Kyran’s dorm building. The tension between the stepbrothers is immediate.
After seeing Kyran aggressively kiss a cheerleader while staring at him, Avi retreats to the bathroom with another friend. Kyran bursts in, furious, and confronts Avi after their friend leaves. The argument quickly escalates into volatile, passionate kissing. When Kyran insists that they are only doing it “just for the money” (160), Avi holds his phone up to record mid-encounter. They both orgasm in their pants, leading to an awkward panic over how to return to the party without being noticed. As Kyran leaves, Avi suggests they should have penetrative sex for their account. Kyran dismisses the idea as “delusional” but doesn’t completely shut it down.
Kyran struggles to suppress intrusive thoughts about his time with Avi in the bathroom. Studying in the library with his friend Guty, he notices cheerleader Krystle flirting with him and decides to pursue a hookup as a way to prove to himself that nothing meaningful happened with Avi. When Krystle pulls him into a bathroom, however, Kyran cannot stop comparing her to Avi and has a near-panic attack, retreating by falsely claiming loyalty to Lexi.
Kyran then goes to Lexi’s dorm, drinks heavily to quiet his thoughts, and attempts to hook up with her as well. He is initially unable to get an erection, then begins to respond only when he closes his eyes and thinks of Avi. However, he stops the encounter out of shame before anything happens. Humiliated, he storms out and goes directly to Avi’s apartment, tackling him to the floor and choking him while blaming him for ruining his ability to be with women. The confrontation collapses into exhausted surrender when Kyran realizes he is fully aroused simply from lying on top of Avi. Avi proposes they stop resisting and have sex, insisting it would only be for their content arrangement. Kyran ultimately agrees and the two undress.
At the first playoff game against Virginia Tech, Avi works as the mascot while reflecting his sexual encounter Kyran. Despite Kyran’s denial, Avi knows he enjoyed it. The game is incredibly tense, and Avi provides Kyran with genuine encouragement during critical moments, leading to brief, positive interactions between them. In the final seconds, Kyran runs the ball himself to score the game-winning touchdown.
After the victory, Kyran celebrates with his teammates and publicly snubs Avi, excluding him from the team party. Humiliated, Avi heads to the locker room to change and accidentally collides with Kyran, who is wearing only a towel. Their argument escalates, and Avi pins Kyran against a locker, leading to a passionate, secret kiss. When teammates get close, Kyran shoves Avi away and insults him to maintain his image. Avi pretends not to care, reminding himself that their relationship is just business, but is left feeling hurt.
Kyran arrives at Avi’s dorm room in the middle of the night after publicly shunning him earlier. Despite some initial tension, they agree to film their first penetrative sex scene for their online business. The encounter is intense and passionate, and it is the first time either has been with another man. Afterward, a flustered Kyran becomes defensive, reiterating that he is only doing this for money and is not bisexual. As he leaves, however, Kyran gives Avi an unprompted, gentle kiss on the jaw before darting out.
Left alone and bewildered, Avi watches the footage and is shocked by their palpable on-screen chemistry, which looks more like making love than performing. He then discovers a series of revealing texts Kyran had sent earlier, admitting he wanted Avi and was sorry for his behavior. Avi realizes their business arrangement has become “complicated.”
Frankie’s proposition that Kyran and Avi film for her OnlyFans page establishes their business relationship, but the encounter immediately complicates its transactional nature. The stated purpose is to make fast money, a pragmatic solution to the financial crisis threatening both characters’ ability to remain in college. However, the scene quickly shifts its focus from a performance with Frankie to the volatile dynamic between Avi and Kyran. Their escalating hostility, with faces inches apart as they trade insults, becomes charged with an attraction that neither has fully acknowledged, producing sexual, bodily reactions that surprise them both. In this way, the motif of social media and online personas develops beyond a simple plot device for financial gain and becomes a space where performance repeatedly exposes feelings the characters are unwilling or unable to confront elsewhere. The irony is central to the motif: content deliberately manufactured for an unseen audience begins revealing something unexpectedly authentic about the people performing it. As subscribers become particularly interested in Kyran and Avi together, financial incentive gives the stepbrothers a convenient reason to continue exploring a dynamic neither is prepared to name.
Kyran’s opening memory of his uncle’s funeral introduces a foundational fear of judgment that helps explain the intensity of his later reactions. Recalling his father’s command to “[p]lead for salvation, Kyran … Loud enough that He can hear you” (81), he associates religious authority with paternal expectations and the possibility of moral failure. This background adds another dimension to the theme of Trauma and the Cost of Secrecy, although the novel still deliberately withholds the full nature of Kyran’s childhood trauma. Rather than immediately confronting what his attraction to Avi might mean, Kyran repeatedly insists that their encounters are strictly financial, using the business arrangement to separate his actions from his identity. His secrecy operates on two levels, as he must conceal the account from his father, teammates, and the public, but he also attempts to conceal his own desires from himself. The more difficult that denial becomes, the more volatile his behavior grows, underscoring how much influence what remains unacknowledged has over him.
At the same time, the immense pressure of The Burden of Maintaining a Public Image also drives Kyran’s increasingly erratic behavior. After his secret encounters with Avi, Kyran makes several frantic attempts to reaffirm his identity as a heterosexual star athlete. His public, aggressive kiss with Lexi while staring directly at Avi, and his subsequent failed hookups with both Lexi and Krystle, are desperate performative acts. His inability to get an erection with women is a physical manifestation of his internal conflict: His emerging authentic self is now at war with the “superstar” quarterback persona he has meticulously constructed. This internal battle externalizes when he physically attacks Avi, blaming him for having “fucking ruined me” (169). Kyran redirects his fear and anger toward the person who most clearly challenges his understanding of himself, a fact which emphasizes the destructive consequences of trying to preserve an identity through denial rather than self-reflection.
Football continues to function as both Kyran’s refuge and the most visible stage on which his public identity is performed. At the same time, however, this setting highlights the strain Kyran is under for this performance. During the Virginia Tech playoff game, Avi’s role as the mascot allows the two stepbrothers to occupy this same setting in sharply different ways: Kyran is the celebrated quarterback under intense scrutiny, while Avi is literally hidden behind a costume. This anonymity paradoxically creates room for a more authentic interaction when Avi offers Kyran encouragement during critical moments of the game. However, after the victory, Kyran’s teammates restore the pressure governing their public relationship, as Kyran both excludes Avi from the celebration and reduces him to a “dumbass in an eagle suit” (187). Only moments later, however, their private behavior contradicts that hostility. This contrast between the sidelines and the locker room reinforce the division that Kyran has between the private and public versions of himself. Football, once an escape from his family problems, has become an environment in which maintaining those separate identities requires increasingly complicated performances. The one person he would receive actual support from—Avi—he instead feels forced to push away.
Across these chapters, the boundary between performance and genuine intimacy becomes progressively more difficult for Avi and Kyran to maintain. Both repeatedly invoke the idea that what they are doing is simply “for the fans” (93, 120, 160) which allows financial necessity to explain behavior neither fully understands. However, their interactions increasingly continue beyond what the “fans” require: Kyran seeks Avi out after unsuccessful attempts to suppress his attraction, their moment in the bathroom is only recorded as an afterthought, and Kyran’s behavior after filming contradicts his insistence that the arrangement means nothing. Avi’s reflection on the recorded footage in Chapter 16 undermines their explanations of doing it for financial reasons, as Avi is struck by how little their interaction resembles a detached performance. The central conflict therefore is no longer whether the two are attracted to each other, which both perspectives have made increasingly clear, but whether they can reconcile that attraction with the identities, family roles, and expectations that have previously defined them.
