Social Media and Online Personas

Social media and online personas are a recurring motif through which the novel explores the shifting boundary between performance and authenticity. Avi first creates the OnlyFans identity “Backwardz_Cap” as a practical response to his financial problems, creating an online version of himself for paying subscribers. When Kyran joins him as “Not_Your_Baby,” the anonymity of their accounts gives both characters a degree of control over how they are seen. Ironically, the identities they invent for an audience also create a space in which they begin confronting feelings they cannot acknowledge in their ordinary lives. Their performance repeatedly exposes genuine attraction, vulnerability, and attachment, complicating the distinction between their manufactured personas and their authentic selves.

At the same time, their relationship to social media develops the theme of The Burden of Maintaining a Public Image as OnlyFans creates problems in their lives. When their identities begin circulating beyond their intended audience, online visibility causes Avi to get suspended and Kyran to fear consequences for his football career, causing them to delete their accounts in an attempt to regain control. By the conclusion, however, their relationship to social media has changed alongside their relationship to themselves. Kyran adopts the public handle “His_Baby” and openly declares his love for Avi, while the epilogue shows them transitioning from anonymous explicit content to successful non-explicit social media as an openly affectionate couple. By the novel’s end, Avi and Kyran still have an audience, but they no longer require an invented persona to make their relationship and affection possible.

Football

Football is a recurring motif through which the novel develops Kyran’s changing relationship with identity, achievement, and public scrutiny. Early in the novel, the football field is one of the few places where Kyran feels certain of his role. The rigid rules, high expectations, and external validation that stands in stark contrast to his chaotic inner life. Early in the novel, he acknowledges this dependency, reflecting, “[t]he football field has always been the place where I shine. I play because I’m good at it, but also because I need it. Football is the biggest part of my image” (30). At the same time, because the sport is so closely tied to his confidence and future, intrusions from his unstable family life—particularly Avi’s unexpected presence as the team mascot—initially feel threatening to the separation Kyran has tried to create between different parts of himself.

As the novel progresses, however, football becomes increasingly entangled with Kyran’s emotional life rather than remaining an escape from it. Avi encourages him during games, Kyran’s anxiety and relationship conflicts affect his performance, and memories of Avi eventually help him regain focus during a crucial football game. These intersections develop the theme of The Burden of Maintaining a Public Image, particularly Kyran’s fear that acknowledge his sexuality or relationship with Avi could destroy the athletic identity on which so much of his self-worth depends. His eventual decision to introduce Avi publicly as his boyfriend after the Rose Bowl begins to dismantle the wall between his two identities. By the novel’s end, Kyran is able to enter the NFL without returning to the false persona he once believes his athletic success required. Football remains important to him, but it no longer has to exist separately from his sexuality, relationships, or emotional life.

The Lines on Kyran’s Palm

The recurring motif of Kyran’s palm lines provides inside into the anxiety he conceals beneath his outward confidence. Early in the novel, Kyran privately studies the lines of his hand during moments of stress, but the significance of the ritual is initially unclear. As his internal distress becomes more visible, he explains, “[c]all it a nervous tick or a habit, call it whatever you want. But I have this thing where I’ll stare at the lines on my palm and imagine them as roads I know. Sometimes I’ll even envision little cars driving up and down them, cruising the highways and streets I’ve been driving and walking on my whole life” (54). The small, repetitive action contrasts sharply with the confident quarterback persona other characters see. While Kyran appears controlled in public, his attention to his palm reveals the constant effort required to maintain that control.

The motif becomes increasingly meaningful as the novel reveals Kyran’s past, underscoring the theme of Trauma and the Cost of Secrecy. Past religious judgment, conflict with his father, and reminders of his childhood abuse can trigger the need for Kyran to ground himself in something familiar and concrete. Tracing imagined streets across his hand allows him to return his attention to the present when traumatic memories pull him elsewhere, emphasizing the psychological distress Kyran has been managing beneath the surface.
